With an addictive, fully-featured multiplayer suite, one of the finest campaigns the franchise has seen in years, and a fresh, revitalised Zombies mode, Call of Duty: WWII is an absolute blast that boldly goes where no modern Call of Duty has gone before: back to its World War roots. And it's about bloody time.

The campaign focuses on the valiant pursuit of freedom from tyranny, the online (when it works) is once again based on personal growth and progression through experience points and loot drops, and then the zombie lark is pure pulp fantasy. This is standard for games, of course, but this clash of tones and themes is rarely as glaring as with WWII. And because none of these disparate components feel fresh or new on their own, it makes the overall package feel even less like the sum of its parts. Perhaps with a more inspired direction, one similar to that scene where Rousseau tensely explores a Nazi headquarters, the seams wouldn't be as glaring.

While it's not a perfect game, Call Of Duty: WWII knows the expectations it has to meet and hits almost every single one of them fairly well.

Call of Duty: WWII is a return to the franchise's roots, but not in the way many players would like to. The story campaign is good, but there have been better in the series. Still, it's worth to go back on the World War II battlefields.

Call of Duty WWII is an excellent return to form from a series that has jumped the shark. CoD in space was a ridiculous diversion that pulled focus away from the core of the franchise. Call of Duty WWII puts the attention squarely on the strength of the gameplay and the bravery of men who fought for the freedom of the world.

With the Call of Duty series, we can demand and meet a high level of quality that always makes it a safe purchase. However, even though the social zone and all that it entails are trying to be the greatest novelty, it is the multiplayer's War mode that really offers a fun and innovative challenge.

If you were worried that Call of Duty would not deliver on the promise to go back to its roots, please try the game! I was skeptical, especially after the beta. I thought there was no way it could happen. I was pleasantly surprised to find out they made good on that promise. Call of Duty: WWII has an amazing, engaging, and emotional story. It is very worthy of the title and will go down in history as one of the best single player experiences Call of Duty has offered.

Call of Duty: WWII is a good, but sterile blockbuster, which you will most likely immediately forget after one walkthrough.

The shooting is solid, the graphics are fine, the sound design and musical score are acceptable if uninspired, and yet the game is significantly less than the sum of its parts. At its best it is proof that Activision's stable of developers has run out of ideas, returning to World War II for no other reason than they didn't know where else to go.

Call of Duty's backward leap back to the origins of the second World War setting is incredibly interesting. The zombie mode is fun, allowing us to vary a lot, while at the same time offering a very high and satisfying challenge.

The worst Call of Duty in years, but the best World War II game in recent memory.

Touching base with your origins is necessary to not lose touch with your audience, and that's exactly what Call of Duty: WWII does without simply regressing. It gets to the core of its key modes and seizes on their intrinsic appeal with some neat, little twists thrown in. However, its campaign and zombies modes (while solid) feel unusually safe, whereas the multiplayer suffers from lacklustre map design and technical issues. You could say this Call of Duty is a sign of hopeful action to ground the series once more, but doesn't go beyond its iconic namesake to deliver something truly special.

Call of Duty: WW2 successfully brings the franchise back to its roots, delivering a solid single player campaign, addicting multiplayer, and a fun Nazi Zombies mode.

An insipid and muddled campaign holds back Call of Duty: WWII just as it disembarks. And the plain, inconsistent, and restrictive multiplayer does not quite reach the heights of its predecessors. Its best features come from the new online War mode and the reliable Nazi Zombies, both of which lack the tidal force to wash all the blood from the sand.

Call of Duty: WWII is a step back into the grounded realism the series has been sorely missing for years. While its single-player campaign isn't anything to write home about, the new additions seen in multiplayer and the return of Nazi Zombies make for a package well worth playing.

The three game modes mean there's probably something in here for everyone, but it's doubtful many will get their money's worth when you take the short campaign and the obligatory map pack into account.

Call of Duty: WW2 is one of the best recent entries of the phenomenal franchise with a varied campaign, addictive multiplayer especially "War" and an enjoyable zombies mode, it's one of the best shooters of the generation. It's unfortunate that the low amount of maps for multiplayer alongside a lack of depth in story mode holds it back to be up there alongside the best in the series

Call of Duty: WW2 is no revolution in the series, and problems with servers week after the release don't help. Nevertheless, it's good to finally stand on the ground and go back to old, fast-paced CoD.
