Finally came Call Of Duty WW2 and I thought, here is maybe where they go back to their roots, they show us that they are listening to these reviews, and the comments of their fan base...Nope...Not at all…

It aims to tell a story of the brotherhood of soldiers, but it's ill-served by undeveloped characterizations.

There's a lot of well-produced content packed inside Call of Duty WWII's bunker, but very little of it is exciting, engaging, or original. The World War II setting papers the cracks, but constant mixed messaging about that historical conflict reveals the game for a gimmick.

Call of Duty: WW2 is competently made by a skilled team. I just wish some of that talent and skill could be put towards anything other than this yearly pile of linear shooting rehash. The game runs well and is very playable, so things aren't all that bad, they just feel soulless. All I could think of while playing is how I would rather be killing Nazis in Wolfenstein 2. 5/10 sad violin interludes

The same amusement park of warfare style game design Call of Duty is known for. While I am tentatively eager to see where the series takes some of the ideas it introduces, the execution of said ideas was underwhelming.

Call of Duty: WW2 is a perfectly serviceable game, but for something that’s supposed to be the grand return to the WW2 era it feels more like a publisher reaction to Battlefield 1 than a genuine interest in doing something new with the setting.

The worst Call of Duty in years, but the best World War II game in recent memory.

The shooting is solid, the graphics are fine, the sound design and musical score are acceptable if uninspired, and yet the game is significantly less than the sum of its parts. At its best it is proof that Activision's stable of developers has run out of ideas, returning to World War II for no other reason than they didn't know where else to go.

It's a waste of a hard-hitting and emotional source material. Go for it f you are looking for a Call of Duty multiplayer experience but stay away from it if it is the story that you crave.

The three game modes mean there's probably something in here for everyone, but it's doubtful many will get their money's worth when you take the short campaign and the obligatory map pack into account.

War isn't hell, but it is thoroughly formulaic

The campaign focuses on the valiant pursuit of freedom from tyranny, the online (when it works) is once again based on personal growth and progression through experience points and loot drops, and then the zombie lark is pure pulp fantasy. This is standard for games, of course, but this clash of tones and themes is rarely as glaring as with WWII. And because none of these disparate components feel fresh or new on their own, it makes the overall package feel even less like the sum of its parts. Perhaps with a more inspired direction, one similar to that scene where Rousseau tensely explores a Nazi headquarters, the seams wouldn't be as glaring.

Activision's blockbuster shooter goes back to its roots, and offers a solid if unsurprising experience, but the three elements within feel like wildly different games

Call of Duty's return to World War II looks great, but feels flat and uninspired from start to finish.

With a terribly below mediocre campaign, an average zombies mode, and an excellent multiplayer option, Call of Duty: WWII manages to hit all the marks. But not in the way that it should. I had high hopes, and was surprised that the real gem I found was not the one I was originally hoping to. It's not great, it's not good, it's okay.

An insipid and muddled campaign holds back Call of Duty: WWII just as it disembarks. And the plain, inconsistent, and restrictive multiplayer does not quite reach the heights of its predecessors. Its best features come from the new online War mode and the reliable Nazi Zombies, both of which lack the tidal force to wash all the blood from the sand.

If you're looking for a new shooter to put some hours into, Call of Duty: WWII is a great choice, but if you're looking for a memorable campaign there are better options elsewhere.
