The return of Joe Madureira to the videogame industry comes with a great game. Amazing visuals and artistic style that match perfectly its great gameplay mechanics.

It might come from a small development team, it might be rough around the edges, but it's could be one of 2017 most unexpected RPG hits that more people should be aware of.

Gorgeous to look at and packing some seriously satisfying dungeon dust-ups, Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a great RPG. Its story may struggle to surprise and its pacing is a little on the slow side, but stick with it and you'll get lost in a deep and rewarding adventure.

Battle Chasers fans will be pleased to know that Joe Madureira's work has found a new home in the gaming industry that we'll certainly see more of. But perhaps more importantly, as someone who never knew about the source material before playing the game, I'll be keenly looking forward to its next entry too.

Battle Chasers: Nightwars is a damn good update to JRPGS of old, carrying the genre into 2018 without sacrificing what made it so appealing to begin with. The fact it's now portable on the Switch just makes it better still.

Despite a title that suggests it came out of a name generator, Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a satisfying slice of JRPG that forges a confident, colourful character of its own from formulaic ingredients. The approachable comic style, plus a couple of neat mechanics that encourage experimentation, give it a freshness that belies the age-old systems at its core, and it doesn't waste your time with filler. Depending on your skill, you'll probably spend around 30 hours on the critical path – comparatively breezy in RPG terms – though there's plenty of side content to occupy you beside the main quest, plus a trio of heroes you'll probably shun on your first playthrough. Disappointing performance dips aside, it feels at home on Switch. Ultimately, it's the same old story – numbers go up! – but it's shot through with an infectious exuberance and attention to detail that reinvigorates old tropes.

I'm glad that Battle Chasers: Nightwar was finally released, despite never being on my radar. This title is a breath of fresh air with several innovative battle mechanics, enjoyable characters and a return to my beloved turn-based gaming. The story could have been better, but for those looking for more Battle Chasers, you're going to be in love with it.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is an insanely good title with classic role-playing game mechanics. The art design and animation are quite unmatched, and it's a pleasure to experience newly discovered areas for that alone. The battle system is more in-depth than most RPGs released today, but it is a shame the sheer amount of grinding you have to do to keep pace with the narrative. I also experience more than a handful crashes and bugs that forced me to quit the game. One, in particular, failed to load the boss for a side mission, not letting me progress any further down the quest chain.

This unique JRPG inspired title might have flown under-the-radar last year, but its a game worth making space for from a crowded 2017.

We fell in love with Battle Chasers Nightwar for its chracter design and wonderful illustrations, but we stayed for its combat system, lenghty campaign and clever New Game Plus mode, which allows to begin anew and experience a different dungeon layout.

If you can stomach its technical imperfections, the addictive loop of combat and exploration combined with a great roster of characters, and excellent production values make Battle Chasers: Nightwar well worth checking out. It might not be the biggest release of October but it's definitely one of the most enjoyable yet.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is very much like the PlayStation JRPGs that it is influenced by. There are elements from Final Fantasy, Suikoden, and even some Diablo. It is a shining example of why people love turn-based RPGs, thanks to the emphasis on character building, management and strategy. The presentation ties everything together with a strong sense of adventure and atmosphere without any hint of cynicism or pretension. This is a game that keeps on giving due to a slew of content that invites people to keep on playing way past the 40-hour mark, and because of the carefully constructed and balanced battle system, it is always exciting to travel this long and tense road. It may have a few rough and inconsistent spots here and there, yet Nightwar remains amazing in spite of its flaws and comes highly recommended to any fan of RPGs.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a must-have for fans of the dungeon-crawling genre. A fantastic art direction, strong character development, tons of hours of content and a wonderful homage to true turn-based combat. At this price, it's a steal.

While the game is a familiar affair, in terms of play and story arc, it's really quite a treat. Some of the visuals are amazing and while the grinding will put off some players, for those who really enjoy the time invested to power up their characters, it's worth the run. I also have to point out that whether you're familiar with the comic book the game is based on or not, it really doesn't matter, and I thoroughly recommend Battle Chasers: Nightwar without hesitation.

One of the best indie RPGs from the current generation is finally playable on the Nintendo Switch, and while it doesn't offer the perfect experience, the allure of portability should be enough to make you consider giving it another chance.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is an amazing turn-based RPG. Even if you don't like these type of games, Battle Chasers will make you fall in love with them. Battle Chaser: Nightwear is much like Child of Light, but the fighting mechanics are a bit more complicated. The mechanics may seem hard at first, but if you give them some time and just play the game you will eventually learn how to manage them and that's when you enjoy Battle Chasers the most. You have to be careful in every fight and use the right strategy and tactics to win the battle. You should definitely try Battle Chasers: Nightwar and without any doubt it worths both your time and money; specially if you are a fan of RPG and turn-based games.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar has everything an RPG fan would like, whether it's a captivating universe, an original turn-based system or even the plethora of activities. Sadly while the core is great, the game suffers from a weak storytelling, too much grinding and a lot of technical problems.
