Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth wants to kick your arse. It wants to beat you down. It wants to be ruthless. However that feeling when you finally nail that strategy; when you overcome a floor that was kicking you down for weeks; when you beat that FOE or that boss that stopped you dead in your tracks… …Well, there’s no better feeling, really.

Etrian Odyssey 5 further refines a winning dungeon-crawling formula while sticking closely to its roots.

I'm sad for the end of the end of the franchise, but at least in Etrian Odyssey V it went out on a real high note.

Whether it's your first foray into Yggdrasil or your fifth, playing Etrian Odyssey V is a true pleasure. Its addictive central gameplay loop combines engaging exploration, strategic combat and DIY cartography, all wrapped up in a charming presentation and a lush, organic aesthetic. It's gorgeous to look at it, beautifully balanced, and polished to a sheen, but perhaps best of all Etrian Odyssey V feels like the culmination of a concept that's uniquely tied to the 3DS. With its touchscreen mapping and masterful use of stereoscopic 3D, it feels utterly at home here, and while the little handheld may have plenty of life in it yet, we still can't imagine a more fitting swan song for this extraordinary era of dual-screened RPG wonder. A must for any aspiring adventurer.

Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth is an excellent addition to the dungeon crawler RPG series from Atlus: players will find a lot of exploration, a huge variety of classes and races, and an intriguing - yet quite challenging - gameplay.

Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth is a typical continuation of the series, focusing on what it does best, from dungeons to exploration and of course the combat. The very rich mapping system and the secrets that fill the dungeons make the whole thing quite addictive, urging you to explore and find every nook and cranny. With its very complete class system, the game offers a wide panel in terms of customization and evolution, and will appeal to turn-based RPGs fans. However, I'm rather shocked that a clear storyline isn't present and that the execution of the game is just too simplistic with no drastic changes since the previous opus, but this doesn't prevent Etrian Odyssey V from being a solid adventure and great Dungeon-Crawler.

Etrian Odyssey V is almost identical to its predecessors, it's completely lacking of a narrative and it's not that pretty to look at. Still, what we have here is a rock solid RPG akin to the ones back in the Dungeons&Dragons days, that will keep you busy for at least fifty to sixty hours.

Etrian Odyssey V': Beyond the Myth clearly is for those who know the series well. However, they may be still confused, due to a very high difficulty along the game, even more than in the previous episodes. But the interest is still there, with new classes, and some welcome new features in game. Plus, the game will reward with its richness the most relentless players, but it may also leave the beginners behind.

Beyond an assumed classicism, Etrian Odyssey V refocuses on the Yggdrasil labyrinth, adding space and depth to exploration. Hence this episode gives more relevance to each decision, each combat, which boldly asserts its mythical role playing heritage through such refined formula.

Etrian Odyssey is a fun & very technical role-dungeon-crawler game in which we will need dozens of hours of intense dedication in order to train all our characters and to get to the top of the Yggdrasil.

One of the oddest sequels of all time, which removes one of the series' most interesting features and adds almost nothing in return.

Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth, returns with the series’ minimalist take on dungeon crawling, which cuts the fat to focus on battling and exploring. The barebones approach won’t be for everybody, especially those who want their JRPGs to come with a chunky story. For fans who love to draw their own maps and pull off creative and crazy party combinations against tough bosses, however, Etrian Odyssey’s single-minded obsession to its classic formula is just what the witch doctor ordered.

Etrian Odyssey V is a remarkable return to the origins of the saga: a complete, finished, and extremely long-lasting game. Developers have blunted many of the gameplay elements, setting aside each side activity and minimizing narration. The reversal of the medal of this operation is in the mighty sense of having already seen it assaulting old-time fans.

Etrian Odyssey V is a fun and interesting game for anyone who likes a bit of challenge and isn’t put off by having to create your own maps. There’s a good balance between explaining enough to get the player started in figuring things out and leaving a lot to be discovered. The combat system is also deep and allows for a lot of customization and strategic choices.

While Etrian Odyssey 5 may not be well-suited for genre novices or people who shy away from the combat side of RPGs, you'd be hard-pressed to find a stronger example of this particular slice of the genre. It offers enormous customization; fresh challenges both inside and out of combat; a setting rich with things to do besides simply fight; and best of all, that addictive mapping feature. Here's a game destined to appeal to the lizard brain of Type-A personalities, to people who love to line up details and see everything slowly take shape. With each line you draw on the in-game map, you bring a tiny bit more order to chaos and transform the unknown into the familiar. Etrian Odyssey 5 isn't simply the best game in its own franchise, it's easily the richest and most satisfying dungeon crawler to appear in the past decade.
