Its message is clear albeit clumsy, though that doesn't detract from its very real and relatable cast of flawed characters. It's challenging in ways many games aren't while managing to maintain an endless supply of magic.
Celeste is a balanced blend of a thrilling story and super fun gameplay that easily have you lose track of time. A jewel not easily found in Platformers nowadays.

Celeste a fantastic platformer that’ll test your precision and problem-solving skills. Each chapter challenges you to win, die, and have fun. Clearly a game to own in your digital gaming library. The only addition the game could possibly add would be adjusting the control buttons — luckily that is in the works. You’ll perish hundreds of times and that’s okay! When you’ve figured out how to maneuver around death traps, you’ll be smiling right up until you die again. When that happens, pick yourself back up and try again. I guarantee you’ll smile again. This is it, Madeline. Just breathe. You can do this.
Fans of tricky platformers will find much to love in the game's design, but it's also a perfect starting point for anyone new to the genre — perhaps even those actively averse to it. In short, it's a bit of a masterpiece.

In an industry with so many passionate titles, Celeste stands tall as one of the best. Its vision is flawlessly executed with excellent gameplay and presentation from top to bottom.
Looking at my death count at the end of the game, it was a little shocking to see that I’d died that many times. But Celeste constantly reassures the player that it’s not something to be ashamed of. Every death is a lesson learned, and with every lesson comes improvement. As long as you don’t give up, there’s always a path to success. Even if you have to fail 2,649 times to see it.
Celeste is not only a brilliant platformer, one that will surely entertain you with its unusual difficulty and its astonishing level design. Celeste is a touching story about depression, a metaphor of life and ultimately a video game that will teach you a valuable lesson: never give in, no matter if you're dealing with a Gargantuan montain, a series of seemingly impossible jumps or anxiety. It might not be the next indie apocalypse, but it's still a product that's well worth of your time and money.

What separates Celeste from masochistic games like The End Is Nigh is that it's not bleak or unyielding.
Celeste is the best precision platformer in years, but it's also a game about the figurative mountains we all struggle with, and that's what makes it truly special.
Celeste is a fantastic 2D platformer that pushes the boundaries of the genre. The trip up the mountain feels deeply immersive and personal and is loaded with beautiful moments and challenges that fit the tone of Madeline's personal struggles and trying to reach the peak of a mountain--whether real or figurative. The challenge can be downright frustrating at times, but due to frequent checkpoints, it's manageable to break down and triumph over even the most difficult rooms. It's fun and fluid to move Madeline around the screen, and the beautiful visuals and soundtrack are almost unmatched by modern 2D platformers. I definitely recommend playing with a d-pad, which made the Switch a frustrating option for me at times, but it didn't inhibit my enjoyment of the game all that much, and if anything, it turned me into an even better player. If you are afraid of the challenge, there are nice options to make the game easier, and if the game is too easy--by god, how?--then there are B-sides to find and unlock with offer harder variations of the stages. Celeste is a fun game and a deep experience for a platformer, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this become a 2018 game of the year contender. Celeste is definitely a game worth picking up.
