More a remake than a sequel but still a welcome return for one of the most original and distinctive genre mash-ups of recent years.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 went back to the roots of the original. The gameplay has stayed nearly the same after nine years, with the exception of the new Grenadier class, but it still stands as firm as a rock. If you enjoyed the original, you will enjoy VC4.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 draws you into its world and characters, keeping you firmly on the front lines of its all-encompassing war while never losing sight of its more grounded ideals and humanity. Fully equipped to be a unique, involved, and visually exquisite strategy game, there’s hardly anything holding it back from victory.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 brings the series back to its roots and polishes that experience to a shine. It's a return to form for the decade-old tactical RPG series and its best entry to date, albeit playing it extremely safe. While it does iron out some of the kinks that plagued its predecessors, it does little else.

I do love Valkyria Chronicles 4 for many reasons. Its characters are more endearing than any I had encountered in the series thus far and its systems and mechanics are still as engaging as ever. However, there is still plenty going against even its most positive attributes.

Despite all this, Valkyria Chronicles offers something better than the standard fare in the tactical RPG space. Where it lacks in the storytelling department and capturing the emotion of the narrative, it makes up for in the depth of gameplay that it offers; it is sure to keep tactical RPG fans happy. The game is only let down by the lengthy discussion scenes and slightly frustrating chance-based combat – a small price to pay for a deep gaming experience. Additionally, the game feels right at home on the Nintendo Switch; definitely something to consider while you wait for the next Fire Emblem.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is the true sequel to Valkyria Chronicles, released ten years ago, and has learned from some of the failings of the original. Expanded upon, the strategy elements have never been better, with utterly fantastic storytelling and characterisation to be found within the RPG aspect. This isn't to say the game is perfect, with it still having flaws in the strategy by focusing too much on speed, rather than tactics, as well as having poor balancing issues later on in the game. In addition to this, there are some quality of life issues as it makes you drop back to the menu after every scene, some of which are only thirty seconds long, as well as requiring too many button clicks in the headquarters where you upgrade units and weaponry. Outside of these minor issues, Valkyria Chronicles 4 is undoubtedly the best game I've played so far in 2018.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 rights the ship after Valkyria Revolution almost sank it. Fans of strategy RPGs should definitely try the demo out and see if the game is right for them.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is tasked with recapturing the magic of the first and return the series to a firm footing. In this it mostly succeeds, with exceptionally engaging strategic combat that is a considerable improvement over the original incarnation.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 continued to surprise me with just how damn fun and addicting the combat is. Fun and memorable characters, a wonderful presentation, and spot-on controls make this a game you won’t want to miss.

Combines robust storytelling with consistently inventive, surprising missions. Not just a return to form, but a new series peak.

Try it. You don't need to play the previous games to enjoy this side story of turn-based tactics in a fantastical WWII. You will need a lot of patience for character archetypes and massive difficulty spikes.

If you're new to the series, I'd still absolutely recommend starting with the original. For fans, though, it's more Valkyria Chronicles, and that's reason enough to pop a giant red exclamation mark above your head with excitement.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 weaves an emotionally charged tale about how war changes everything it touches and even through moments where winning felt just as bad as losing, I felt compelled to push forward to the end.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is the sequel I've been waiting for, returning to the roots of what made the first game so special. It adds a handful of new and interesting mechanics to its tactical battles, nearly all of which improve the formula in tangible ways, but otherwise plays it fairly safe. The story can feel a little bit impersonal and disconnected from the rest of the series, but the way it makes even the smallest characters important and alive is remarkable. It's great to see the Valkyria Chronicles series back on track, as it's still one-of-a-kind.

It’s a human story about people stuck on a battlefield. Some days are full of action, while other days you’ll sit in the trenches and tell stories.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 stumbles in its narrative, but great characters, a unique aesthetic, and an engaging combat system make for the best game in the franchise since the original

Forget the flawed spin-off named Valkyrira Revolution with Valkyria Chronicles 4. Sega delivers a formula that still wonderfully works ten years later. Its unique design makes the game recognizable among all others. The difficulty is quite high and will occupy you for a while besides all the sidequests. The translation into french language is another reason to buy this game mixing story, strategy and tactical sens despite a few flaws. We hope we will no longer wait for ten years before antoher game like this comes on our home consoles.
