An unlikely revival that's spirited in its return to the genre's arcade roots, but that is uneven in its execution.

V-Rally 4 is an old-school rally game at heart, for better and worse (but mainly the latter). If you stick with it you'll eventually start to master and enjoy it, but the slippery handling and unforgiving ‘no mistakes allowed' rally races make getting to that point a real slog. On top of this, its numerous performance issues are so severe that they aren't just ugly, they're downright distracting: the result being that although this is now the best rally game on Switch by default, pretty much every aspect of it leaves acres of room for improvement.

With so many great rally games already available, V-Rally 4's poor handling and inconsistent AI just can't compete with its competition. It should have stayed as a fondly-remembered retro series.

The game has been able to offer us a good game experience, but it lacks some simple additions that will make it a much better experience than it used to be.

An arcade racing game with some spectacular moments, whose roots are guiltily stuck in the past.

An unlikely sequel that ultimately struggles to find its place among today's line-up of more polished and more established alternatives.

Lacking the precision required to tantalize the more serious racing fan, but perhaps too much of a challenge for many, V-Rally 4 is packed to the brim with nice ideas and potential, but just as many annoyances. Sadly, in this competitive marketplace, it is stuck in a ditch. The strange layout of the career mode and iffy handling model do their very best to put a downer on things, but I really hope Kylotonn has the resources to build upon this effort and provide something that can take the fight to the very best racing games in the future.

V-Rally 4 is a game worth experiencing and Kylotonn Games should be on every racing fan's radar after this release.

Once you get to grips with how it handles, V-Rally 4 is a competent and lightweight arcade-style off-road racer with a fair bit of charm that harkens back to the series' foundations. Aiming for spectacle and variety in design, it looks and feels like a 2018 V-Rally game. However, a shallow and disappointing career mode, irritating music, and a handful of visual and gameplay bugs means you're likely to grow weary in a short space of time.

Track design, off-road arcade driving and nice scenarios make V-Rally 4 a game worth trying; unfortunately, ansphalt races, career and Buggy/Rally Cross are much less enjoyable.

A classic PlayStation series returns for another worldwide run. Disappointing graphics and a lackluster (and often annoying) soundtrack detract from an otherwise fun and varied racing game. Fans of the series and fans of professional rallying will feel right at home, and even newcomers can get the hang of drifting with some work.

V-Rally 4 is an ambitious and diverse game, but it is ruined with a control that there is nowhere to catch it and a gameplay that deflates every hour we play it.

In a genre that has its fair share of challengers, V Rally 4 comes in dead last thanks to its bipolar handling, meagre selection of tracks and a modest grab bag of disciplines that fails to excite any fan of dirty racing.

V-Rally 4 has some good ideas and a solid base, but it seems that we are always close to something excellent, before being disappointed by a disruptive element, as it will probably remain limited to racing enthusiasts...

It's never that V-Rally 4 is actively bad, but the 16-year wait since V-Rally 3 is no way near worth it. No part of the overall experience surpasses the benchmarks set by more polished, mechanically complex, spectacular or enjoyable racing games from both the arcade and sim camps. Even compared to the universally disappointing Dirt 4, V-Rally 4 feels like it's missing more than a few tricks.

V-Rally 4 features a lot of exhilarating moments that make it one of the most engaging racers I've ever played. A decent selection of disciplines and beautiful graphics make this a good pick-up for any casual off-road racing fan.

V-Rally 4 requires immense suffering just to eke a modicum of enjoyment from its frustrating, archaic game design. The few things it does right is not remotely worth the price of admission.

V-Rally 4 is worst than the previous game developed by Kylotonn Studios. It mixes every competition inside the career mode, creating a lot of confusion in the player's mind. The graphics are outdated and driving system is inaccurate.

If V-Rally 4 had a more structured career, I really feel like it would have been a great game. As it is, however, it's fun until you feel like you're completing the same events over and over again.
