If your tastes aren't yet accustomed to the complexity of tactical RPG titles, it's unlikely Disgaea 1 Complete will take your fancy. In harnessing all the staple features of the genre and bringing an assortment of new elements to the table, it's more of a game for tactical RPG veterans as opposed to curious newcomers that may find the game overwhelming and otherwise daunting. If your interest is still piqued, however, don't be deterred, for scratch beneath the surface and you'll uncover a commendable remake with exciting new features for longtime fans, and a classic title that still excels in narrative and gameplay alike .

Disgaea 1 Complete does not provide significant news nor does it solve the problems of the original game, which is disappointing considering the price at which it reaches us. Basically, it's just a graphically more advanced version of the recent PC port.

Disgaea 1 Complete is an excellent remake of an excellent strategy RPG game, and it fits perfectly in the Nintendo Switch's library. We already got to enjoy Disgaea 5 Complete last year on Nintendo's hybrid console, and getting a chance to play the first one with a whole new look is definitely appreciated. There is a ton to do in this one, and that's without even going into Etna Mode which features an alternate scenario in which Etna ends up killing Laharl, so she becomes the main character of the story!

Aside from some major crash bugs and a couple of other niggling faults, portable Disgaea is right at home on Switch.

Depending on your taste, Disgaea 1 Complete can offer hours upon hours of gameplay filled with team building and grinding. With its gorgeous graphics and updated animations, this is hands down the best and "complete" version of the first game. And while the game does lack plenty of add-ons from later titles, hardcore Disgaea fans will still find a lot to love with this remastered classic.

When push comes to shove, Disgaea 1 Complete isn't perfect but it's still worth playing. It remains the best story in the series, complete with some of the best jokes. Sure, it could've been modernized and had more changed but the best elements remain. Between exploring item world, fighting post game bosses and achieving insane stats, it's the type of game that you could spend hundreds of hours in and still have plenty to do. So, if you want to lose yourself in a new turn based RPG, this is a fantastic choice, where as returning fans need to understand it's pretty much the same experience with a new coat of paint.

What you're really getting out of Disgaea is a lot of fact-paced, tactical gameplay, tons of grinding well beyond what you see in similar games, and quirky, off-kilter humor that will appeal to your inner irony goth. It's less remarkable now that anime is just a normal part of everyday geek culture now, but what you're looking at here is history, from when being weird was in the middle of starting to be cool, and Persona was still a grungy PS1 game nobody had heard of. Disgaea 1 Complete is a celebration of that legacy, of the game that put NIS on the map. Disgaea is so familiar to me that I'm not blown away by this release in particular, but I'm glad it exists, so that someone new can.

With so many different factors to manipulate on your way to reaching ridiculously high character levels, it's almost impossible to see any end in sight to the game.

Disgaea 1 Complete blows raspberries at po-faced, self-serious strategy games by mixing complex systems with comedy to delightful effect. This remaster is a great introduction for series newcomers, provided you can forgive the odd mismatching texture and an inflexible camera.

It's hard not to look at Disgaea 1 Complete with at least a little bit of nostalgia. Its release for the PS4 in the PS2's Hour of Darkness 15th anniversary original release is a great way to celebrate not only how incredible the original was, but all the legacy of this magnificent franchise.

If you are a fan of the strategy RPG genre, this game will give you a lot of bang for your buck, and is set as the perfect beginning for you to take on the entire series! Disgaea 1 Complete is an absolutely remarkable remake of an excellent game, which you now get to enjoy at home and on the go on the Nintendo Switch. The game might not be for everyone, but that's a burden most games of the genre carry, but is certainly an amazing release!

Disgaea 1 is the one least likely to overwhelm people who aren't deeply familiar with tactics JRPGs and complex JRPG systems. For this reason, this remaster is the perfect entry point for the curious, and anyone interested in the history and heritage of Nippon Ichi's premier franchise will get a kick out of it too.

As a remake, Disgaea 1 Complete is pretty barebones and lacks new content. It also has a slightly misleading name, but this doesn’t take back that it is a still a classic that holds up well even today and serves as a good entry point into the series.

Disgaea 1 Complete has a great history, and it is great fun revisiting this classic title with its new paint job and additional bells and whistles. There is something of a missed opportunity to add content to the core story or gameplay that does not occur here, but for an RPG / strategy fan such as myself, there is a lot of quality gameplay mixed with nostalgia that reminded me that even at fifteen years later, Disgaea does it better than most.

Regardless of the texturing issues, Disgaea 1 Complete looks good and plays quite well for a fifteen-year-old game. Returning players will feel right at home, and newcomers will enjoy what made Disgaea a popular, tactical role-playing game in the first place. Best of all, playing on the Nintendo Switch allows you take this great, comedic adventure anywhere. Basically, when it comes to whether or not you should play, the answer is clear: Aye Aye, Dood!
