I don’t really know how to quantify this remaster since it isn’t bad but it also isn’t great. Instead, it lands deep in the middle. When all is said and done, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning will be for someone who loved the game and maybe lost their old copy, for modders, and for people who are just looking to bask in nostalgia. But for the rest of the RPG fans, you won’t be missing much if you don’t head back to the Faelands.

Putting together a final rating for this package is tricky, much like it always is for a remaster. Ultimately, then, I’m aiming this final score more toward people who have never played the game before. Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning needs some spit and polish to get it working properly. If that happens you can bring the score up to a full four out of five stars. But right now, if you can deal with its issues there’s an RPG that was clearly made with love waiting for you.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is a solid remaster of a game that deserved way more praise than it received on initial release.

With the exception of a new difficulty and some minor enhancements to its combat, Kingdoms of Amalur feels like a remaster built upon the community previous efforts on modding the original game. The biggest “improvement” you’ll see — at least on PC — is a myriad of new bugs and headaches. Stick to the original if possible.

All in all, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning can be great or disappointing depending on your mindset. If you’re looking for a fully remastered and polished up version of this game, then you’re going to feel let down. If you’re simply looking for a new and more accessible way to replay this cult classic, then you’ll probably overlook the imperfections and be happy you can actually play it again.

The remastered version of an underestimated RPG that deserves a second chance.

For those who experienced the original game on PC however, it’s probably best to temper expectations, as the main draws here are a few welcome gameplay improvements and the promise offered by next year’s new content.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is a fun way to revisit a game that I have fond memories of from last generation. By and large, the game has aged pretty well. Some fans might be disappointed that there weren’t larger changes made, but I’m happy to see the game back in any form and can once again hold out hope that maybe, just maybe, we’ll get more titles that allow us to revisit this fascinating world in the future as well.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning stands out with its incredible combat and great character progression. There are some really interesting missions and a good variation of explorable environments, but it is a pity that, although the game has fun elements and cool moments, it is buried under generic elements that drags on repetitive areas and missions in an extremely disconnected way.

There are remakes, remaster and ‘remasters’. Unfortunately, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning belong to the third category as it does absolutely nothing to improve the original in any visible way. It is basically the same game as the one released in 2012, meaning generic setting, affluence of painfully boring dialogues, and repetitive combat with enemies who do not pose any threat for the player.

Eight years on, Kingdoms of Amalur still feels, looks and plays just like it did when it first released — and not for the best of reasons. THQ Nordiq missed out on a ton of opportunities to fine-tune many of its kinks, which look really outdated in today’s gaming landscape. Otherwise, it’s always nice to dive back into one of the most underrated fantasy RPGs in the past decade.

A solid remaster of a good RPG, with great combat mechanics and interesting lore, but with several problems inherited from the original game. A game suited more to newcomers to the game, while the ones who already played it won't find many reasons to replay it.

With a deeper level of adjustments and tuning, Re:Reckoning could have elevated a cult classic to equal many modern action RPG’s. Instead, this remaster plays it safe and doesn’t really change much.

It’s pretty neat to see Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning hit current-gen consoles, with its epic adventure still holding up well eight-years on. The combat is fast, fluid and enjoyable, whilst exploring the vast and lore-rich game world and evolving your character’s skillset will keep you hooked into the journey for a long, long time. That’s not to say that it doesn’t have its share of imperfections though, with some frame rate stutters, long load times and the occasional crash causing issues throughout the game. These issues don’t occur too frequently, but when they do it’s a nuisance. Some of the quests are guilty of being a bit boring too, which becomes all the more obvious when you consider how many of them there actually are. Still, behind those technical problems is a really enjoyable open-world RPG for players to sink their teeth into, with Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning sure to offer hours of enjoyment for returning gamers and those who are fresh to the adventure.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was, and still is, a fun game to play. With hundreds of missions and a constant wealth of loot to sort through, this remaster, as poor as it is, would still tickle the fantasy-RPG bone of anyone seeking a time-sink until November.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-reckoning is a good fantasy role-playing title that was not delivered as it should have been. The game battles are very varied and fast, the game's artistic graphics and technical stability are at a good level, the design of the mission stages are repeated after a while, and the game characters are dry and soulless. The game remaster is just a simple port for current generation consoles and is very slightly different from the original version.

Despite not being the remaster the CG trailers would have us believe, Re-Reckoning remains a worthy title everyone should experience.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning might be worth it for those that never got around to the original. It's hard to recommend to returning players as a bare-bones remaster.

Honestly, if you have the original game still there’s little reason to upgrade to the Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning remaster. While the quality of life improvements are a welcome inclusion, there just isn’t much else new here.

The main problem with Re-Reckoning is that it’s just not a very good rerelease. [...] The sheer amount of technical issues on the PlayStation 4 version dwarf those improvements, and the multiple bugs make for a frustrating and unpredictable experience.
