A solid campaign from Raven Software with a somewhat disappointing multiplayer and zombies experience.

We didn't need a new Call of Duty game in 2020. Modern Warfare and Warzone could have sustained the franchise for another year until the next-gen systems are more widely available, but that was never going to happen. Fortunately, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War isn't the rushed placeholder that many feared it would be, and it might just turn out to be one of the more enjoyable Black Ops games when all is said and done.

While suffering from technical issues, the campaign treads new ground as the rest of the game does little to evolve the franchise.

For the veterans of the title, there is nothing new or exciting since they will be able to complete Zombie mode at least five to ten times. For newcomers on the other hand, it probably is no more appealing than a quick round in Warzone.

2020’s iteration of the long-winded franchise is once again a mixed bag, which sadly has become the norm with the series. A campaign that, while widely entertaining and for the most part interesting, is cut far too short to have any real substantial worth, a multiplayer mode that tries to do some new things but ultimately feels far too same-y with the old frustrations rearing their ugly head, and finally, a fantastic Zombies mode that entertains when playing alone or with friends adds up to a package that feels disjointed. The sooner that Activision decides to allow consumers to purchase elements of the game as separate entities the better, as the Zombies mode alone is worth a spin, just not at the full asking price.

The project of rebirth of the Call of Duty brand continues with Activision that has found the right way to get the brand back on track and after the excellent work of Infinity Ward and Raven Software with Modern Warfare, the ball has passed into the hands of Treyarch who has been able to continue what has been seen previously by bringing back the events narrated in the original chapter of Black Ops by reviving iconic characters and the historic Cold War. The multiplayer manages to give good feedback by taking up the feeling of the Black Ops series also using the amazing feature of the adaptive triggers that are able to give unique sensations when played on PS5.

Overall it’s impressive how many experiences they have packed inside Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War. You get a full-fledged, amazing singleplayer campaign, a more than decent multiplayer, endless zombie fights, and a silly twin-stick shooter bundled together. Not all of them are perfect, but somehow it all still holds up pretty good.

Fans of the franchise and many gamers of a certain age, especially those who have a next-gen console in the hopper, will still find enough to like in Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War. I personally still replay the mission with the arcade shootout just to get a little '80s cheeseball energy going, but I think the strategy of overwhelming people with as much content and as many shooter modes as possible might be starting to wear thin. We're not there quite yet, but I'm hoping the next Black Ops might have just a bit more than poking at my childhood memories of a culturally iconic president.

it’s a fine shooter in its execution and the campaign is brilliant but it needs more content and gadgets as at the moment it doesn’t really set itself apart from previous years

Another year, another Call of Duty entry, and while at this point in time Black Ops Cold War doesn’t stand out from the crowd, the roadmap Activision has laid out certainly looks interesting. With loads of free content coming soon, including new maps for Multiplayer and Zombies, the full potential of the game feels like it’s yet to be unveiled.

Considering each of the segments that make up the title, it is possible to conclude that Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War is indeed a good shooting game. The campaign is competent and more engaging than the last games in the franchise; the fun multiplayer introduces significant changes, and almost all of them are positive; Zombies mode is addictive, although it needs more different maps.

New mechanics of Call of Duty gives hope for future. But is it reasonable to buy a game with such a short main story for this price if you're only into single player campaign? That's a big question mark.

Cold War exudes a creative evolvement in its storytelling, more than its existing blueprint. The framework of its successful gameplay loop remains intact, and while some may criticise it – justly – you cannot deny that it works every time; if it's not broke, don’t fix it.

For the most part, the short-ish campaign can be rushed over a long weekend. Fortunately for the Black Ops Cold War, there are enough choices that might entice most players to go over the campaign at least one more time. For gameplay enthusiasts, there is always fun to be had messing around with perk combinations and higher difficulty settings. All-in-all, it’s a highly polished experience that plays it a little too closely on the safe side.

Although short on content, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a dependable entry in the franchise with fast action and a variety of solid modes. The great zombies level and the nostalgic campaign are definitely the highlight, and the competitive multiplayer should become strong once it gets more maps and tweaks.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the guns feel great and the maps are equally well designed, but I need more, Treyarch. I can’t even customise my Operator, and there’s like, hardly any to choose from really. It didn’t take me long to unlock practically every weapon and see every map, and I can’t envision myself sticking around for too much longer if the game doesn’t get updated pronto. And I think this is the heart of the issue. It’s like Cold War has stalled on the way to a patch it scheduled in advance to save time, and we’re now just awkward passengers growing more impatient as we wait for it to lurch forwards.
