It ticks all the boxes it promised to, but feels like it could've gone further with improvements to gameplay, home cities for new civs, and AI.

A few bugs here and there and some weird performance ticks aside, this remastered version of Age of Empires III, certainly qualifies to receive the ‘Definitive Edition’ moniker. The updated visuals and compatibility with today’s PCs, combined with the entire package of expansions and newly added content, creates for a wholistic RTS experience that should not be missed by those who are fans of the genre.

Age of Empires 3 is still flawed, but Forgotten Empires and Tantalus Media have delivered an excellent remaster that improves the game in almost every way.

It's not a Final Fantasy 7 style remake, but the Definitive Edition comes closer to a remake than a simple remaster can, and that goes a long way to making the game enjoyable for the modern gaming audience.

We hope that Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is the last step towards the fourth chapter, but this farewell has not a sad taste.

The Tantalus team, the architect of this remastered, has, on the whole, done a good job. Age Of Empires III: Definitive Edition offers the ability to retrieve all the content of the original game (and some extras) in one solution and with good technical improvements. Considering the price we would say it's worth it, whether you're a nov service or a longtime fan of the series.

Nevertheless, if you get through such sporadic difficulties, which will probably be patched up soon, with the refreshed Age of Empires III you will be having a great time! I will write it directly - such games are simply not done anymore, and a great pity, because for a very long time I have not been in contact with such a wildly pleasant and satisfying real-time strategy. At a time when everyone is forcibly trying to clone StarCraft or going down an easier turn-based path, it's a good place to dive again in 2005 and break a few nights.

Quality of life improvements, the new UI, and even Historical Battle mode, are additions highly appreciated; however, they are not enough justification to return to Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, unless you are already a die hard fan.

Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is a fun RTS. Historical Battles are a highlight and it's an easy game to grasp for newcomers with tutorials and the Art of War mode. However, bugs, lack of variety and a grindy level system hold it back.

It comes down to the fact that Age of Empires III has never been the best at fundamental RTS gameplay. The Definitive Edition has done a great job of bringing the title into the modern age with beautiful visuals and a new UI – but that core gameplay remains, and it falls flat especially compared to the standard set by last year’s Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition‘s intriguing campaigns are worth a look, but if you value adaptive and fluid multiplayer gameplay, stick with Age of Empires II.

Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition complies, because it is known to be a remaster. But it goes further, because it adds new features, options and game modes. This is why a bittersweet taste may remain because more could have been done, because the source of a remastering is also the limit to improvement. But for RTS and Age of Empires fans, that's what it took to wait for Age of Empires IV.

It wasn't easy to work on Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition. In fact, we are talking about a classic, which during the early 2000s failed to impose itself easily in the hearts of fans, between a simplification of the mechanics all too evident and a historical period not really loved.
