While Mario Golf: Super Rush isn't the deepest experience, the arcade gameplay and modes on offer allow it to stay on par.

Super Rush is no hole-in-one, but it hits for par at the very least and will only keep getting better as it’s expanded upon with DLC in the coming months.

Mario Golf Super Rush has solid golf mechanics, but a lack of content and charisma transform it into an unforgettable experience.

Mario Golf: Super Rush plays as well as it should and introduces some exciting elements to the long-running series. Playing with the right people can make for a fun time… but that's about it. A poorly executed Adventure Mode, overall lack of creativity and no incentive to keep playing all make for a disappointing package that is more of a step backwards for the franchise. The promise of free DLC updates may alleviate some of these issues, but when looking at it as a full-priced first-party Nintendo product, Super Rush simply isn't up to par.

With speed taking precedence, Mario Golf: Super Rush is for players who want to experience the thrills of golf at quadruple the pace. However, traditional Mario Golf fans may feel snubbed here as there is little challenge outside standard golf and solo play, with character unlocks and incentives completely excluded. Perhaps with the promise of continuous updates due to its rather limited base game, Super Rush may feel less one-sided, though for now it values velocity over proficiency – the complete antithesis to real-life golf. Not quite an eagle, almost a birdie, but absolutely on par.

Mario Golf: Super Rush is an interesting and fun take on golf, but the adventure mode is lazy and could have delivered way more.

Mario Golf: Super Rush manages to be a mostly enjoyable experience, but feels undercooked compared to its predecessors.

After a near-two-decade break, the Mario Golf franchise is back on home consoles, with a speedy twist. Play as a large cast of Mario characters old and new and hit the greens once again with Mario Golf: Super Rush. Is it worth playing, or should the storied franchise have stayed dormant?

Mario Golf: Super Rush strengthens the core gameplay with its faster pace and strong fundamentals, but the barebones package will likely leave players wanting more.

As the first Mario Golf series game on a home console in almost 20 years, my expectations were high. While I smile seeing my favorite plumber tee off, Mario Golf: Super Rush admittedly lacks some polish I'd expect from Nintendo-published software. It's also heavily focused on gimmicks, though standard golf presents a fun simulation-lite alternative to PGA Tour. But, the overall package is mixed and not "content-packed" as advertised, at least for solo players. Like Mario Tennis before it, some tweaks, additional content, and a sale would make this a wiser purchase.

Mario Golf: Super Rush is pretty much everything I could want out of a Mario Golf title. Its brand of simple but rewarding golf serves as a sturdy foundation that allows the game to build on it with all sorts of ways to play against and have you interact with your opponents. The Golf Adventure single-player mode is a helpful and entertaining way to learn the lay of the land and refine the skills of your Mii before pitting your skills against other opponents online. Unfortunately, the online play could have been improved with the implementation of some intelligent matchmaking.

A lack of content holds Mario Golf Super Rush back, but purely mechanically and in terms of design, it stands as one of Mario's best sports game outings in a very long time.

Most games from the sport dump you into a links lexicon water hazard, Super Rush, however, assumes a conservative approach to a player's golf and golf-lingo knowledge, and educates in a manner that isn't patronising at all. In fact, it's just a lot of fun without being cheesy or too OTT.

Mario Golf Super Rush is competent, and it shows flashes of creativity in its Speed Golf and Battle Golf modes, but the package ultimately loses momentum a little too quickly. Still, with friends it's a blast, so if you've got a good group of friends that're ready to don some plaid plumber's overalls you're in luck.

Mario Golf Super Rush remains easy to pick up and play, but it’s lacking the final coat of polish we expect from Nintendo games, and is light on content for a full priced Switch game. It’s a Mario sport game that can be picked up and played by a wide audience, but has positioned itself to only really appeal to dedicated fans of Mario Golf.

Mario Golf: Super Rush is a golf simulator, that doesn’t take itself seriously. This makes the game very pleasant. What is more, the game introduces some innovations to the formula which makes it feel pretty complete. It's a pity that Mario Golf is a "party game" focused heavily on 4-person competitive play.

Mario Golf: Super Rush is one of the few games Nintendo puts out that every now and then is a bit of a miss. While trying its best by adding new modes, it doesn’t have the charm, polish and even satisfaction that have come from previous superb titles in the Mario sports series. What it needed to succeed was more doubling down on those beloved Mario characters, more time in the oven and plenty of ways to sink your time. Despite some moments of promise, it failed to match on almost all those fronts.

Mario Golf: Super Rush is a frustrating game from a frustrating developer. Camelot seems to have learned nothing from Mario Tennis Aces’ poor launch, and with future updates promised, it seems they aim to fix Super Rush’s flaws through content updates. Make no mistake – Mario Tennis Aces is a better title than Mario Golf: Super Rush, but perhaps Super Rush will follow in its footsteps once again and turn into a better game in a couple of months. For now, this is a title with great ideas that are held back by amateurish development choices.

My biggest problem with Mario Golf: Super Rush is that it rarely reaches a point where it's consistently entertaining. It all feels too safe, and too conservative. It feels like a by-the-books Mario sports game. It doesn't seem like it can support the hours spent with friends that you expect from the series. It's simply a shell of moustaches and rainbows to remind me of the fun times that were once had.
