I enjoyed playing Edge of Eternity, but it has a few too many shortcomings for it to stand out as a ‘must play’ RPG experience. Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty to do in the game, the environments look pretty, and the battling is fun, but there was also a sense of vacancy in the world, a lot of story-threads felt unfinished, and some of the long-winded encounters could get boring. I didn’t have a bad time with the game at all, but there are much better alternatives to play.

I just did not care enough about anything that I was seeing or doing to enjoy Edge of Eternity. The narrative lacks thought and insight, the characters are bland, and each new location simply means more fetch quests and slightly higher level enemies to go through the motions to fight. Edge of Eternity is undoubtedly beautiful and the art team deserves kudos, but it is a hollow, empty, and shallow kind of beauty, and with no intelligence nor soul to back it up, the talents of the artists are largely wasted on this one.

Edge of Eternity wanted to be all the games that influenced it, and that prevented it from being its own game. With many ramifications and few conclusions we end up helpless in the beautiful and fairly populated Heryon. No doubt the future of Midgar will be interesting, and while its first adventure doesn't set the course, it already sets the stage for a series to follow.

Edge of Eternity is a good RPG, that maybe was a little too ambitious for a small studio but delivers a good experience for people who wish for a JRPG mixing medieval fantasy with magic and technology. The soundtrack is consistently excellent unlike its visual presentation which varies from marvelous to frustrating. Battles are fun and challenging, with simple, interesting mechanics. I honestly believe that, if Midgar Studios had more budget, Edge of Eternity could have competed with the JRPGs of big developers in scale and quality.

At the end of the day, Edge of Eternity just sort of is. There is nothing really memorable here, just a bunch of ideas that don’t really deliver much of a kick. The UI is just disastrous, turning any task into a kick in the privates and the combat is just flat, with nothing really exciting about it. The basic premise of the story is strong enough and the characters aren’t horrible, but the dialogue felt rushed far too often. Edge of Eternity as a game is something that I played, but I can’t say I really enjoyed much of it. It’s a big world sure, but there is not a lot to fill it up, leaving a lot of empty space. It’s not the worst game out there and that’s really the best you can say about it.

Edge of Eternity has cool ideas and a world that could be very amazing, but it seems that Midgard Studios didn't know how to handle the technical part of the open world very well and all that immersion seems to have died in the presentation trailer.

Edge of Eternity is a true love letter to the JRPGs of the late nineties, an ambitious title that seeks to modernize a classic formula without distorting it. The end result is an imperfect role-playing game, but still capable of entertaining and exciting the player thanks to an engaging combat system and a first-class script, along with a top-quality soundtrack. Surely capable of satisfying the lovers of the genre.

While not every idea in Edge of Eternity fully gels, developer Midgar Studio gets enough right that the game feels familiar and welcoming – a fantastic classic RPG in modern clothing. With fun characters, a solid battle system, and just enough surprises to maintain the player's attention, Edge of Eternity announces the arrival of Midgar to the top echelon of JRPG developers.

Edge of Eternity comes with more than its fair share of technical issues. That does not stop this game from offering up engaging combat and interesting stat management. Combine that with an easygoing world to explore, and you find yourself enjoying the experience and shrugging off the tech issues. Edge of Eternity won't shake the ground in its wake, but it provides more than enough for any RPG fan to enjoy.

Edge of Eternity is an ambitious JRPG from a small French indie studio. While it gets the story right and has a visually appealing world, subpar and unbalanced gameplay drag it down.

For a game made by a small team it’s very ambitious — but that’s also the problem. Environments are far larger than they need to be, and the title struggles to load in textures and has a fair amount of pop-in. There are also loads of systems, such as party energy levels or crafting, which are never fully explained or seem to be particularly useful... It definitely feels like developer Midgar Studio should have reduced the scope of both the story and some of the gameplay systems, because this may have allowed it to add more polish to the areas that work well. It’s a shame, as the game does have plenty of potential, but it’s a little bit too rough around the edges to fully enjoy.

Edge of Eternity offers a throwback to 90's JRPGs, though it doesn't nail the landing it seeks.

This is a well-created game that will give you a few dozen hours of fun, and also has more pros than cons.

The overall feel of the game is great and I would recommend it to any fan of the RPG genre. Some things seemed out of place for the type of RPGs I like to play but each person has their own preferences. Midgar Studio did a fantastic job of putting this title together and it is currently available on steam for 29.99 USD and the Digital Deluxe version is also available on sale at the moment.

Edge of Eternity aims for the stars and manages to reach a few of them, delivering a compelling plot and an expansive, varied, and often-beautiful world. Sadly, clunky dialogue, issues with exploration and combat, and a pervasive level of jankiness hold the game back. You have to admire Midgar Studio for pushing themselves, but as is, the Edge of Eternity may be too jagged for some.

It’s obvious that the game comes from a place of love, and it is clear how much passion Midgar Studio has, but Edge of Eternity feels like a case where the developers have set their sights too far. There are lots of elements that could be interesting if given the proper care and attention, but in their current state most of them feel superficial and end up cluttering up the whole experience.

Edge of Eternity is almost brilliant. The writing is great, but the graphics, gameplay, and especially the camera angles drag it down. If you crave some dark JRPG action and are willing to put with questionable combat mechanics, by all means, check it out. However, if you hate the idea of trying to plan out a strategy when you can’t see half the enemy forces or you get motion sick easily, maybe give this one a pass.

With only a small team, Midgar Studio has created an ambitious game that could pass for an AAA creation.
