Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game is fun, especially when played with a friend. While some events aren’t as engaging as others, there’s enough variety here that everyone will find something they can enjoy or excel at. The huge range of outfits available to unlock gives completionists a reason to keep going back, but most players will find this best enjoyed in short bursts.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game is fine. It would've been nice to get some of the events from the Mario & Sonic series ported over to make this feel more robust compared to Sega's older Olympics titles, but what's here plays well enough if you don't mind some quirks - especially with the team games. The focus on multiplayer is warranted, since that's how the general public will approach it, but it would've been nice if there were more for the solo player to do. If you're looking for a party game and not a serious multi-discipline sports simulation, this isn't a bad choice.

It's easy to see how a fan of past Olympics games could be put off by Tokyo 2020, but if you're willing to lean into its arcade tendencies, you can have a lot of fun with it. The games are enjoyable for the most part, the presentation is great, and there's enough depth to keep you playing longer than just a few rounds of each sport. It certainly won't be for everyone, but SEGA's willingness to be bold and divert away from the simulation-heavy focus of previous Olympics games makes Tokyo 2020 a refreshingly memorable competitor that deserves some attention.

Taken for what it is, Tokyo 2020 works well enough to carve a niche for itself as a surprisingly fun and easy to pick-up multiplayer game for families and parties.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is a good game that features a variety of good-to-decent events and a wonderful ability to play alongside friends. The inconsistency of the game's design with controls and the difficulty arc that spikes hurt the game but aren't dealbreakers.

Summer Olympics Tokyo 2020 is fun with a group of friends and family, but there is very little reason to pick up the controller if you are going to be playing alone. Fun customization options allow a great deal of weirdness, and the wide variety of minigames offer breezy fun without a ton of depth. Lower your expectations, invite some buddies over, and you'll likely have a good time.

Although not the deepest diving pool, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is still entertaining enough to splash around in for a while. Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is considerably better than just a cash grab game tied to a singular cultural event, but it’s not the gold medal winner of sports sims either. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with going home wearing a bronze medal.

All things considered, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is a great sports game but only a decent Olympics game. Nearly all of the 20 (or is it 16?) events offer an enjoyable enough time and only a few are bogged down by mechanics, but once you’ve played them all a couple of times, you’re done. If you dabble in the two player mode regularly or find a game online, it could be a deeper experience, but it just feels like the trimmings aren’t quite there. I won the boxing gold medal as a bunny rabbit maid with blue hair though, so there’s that.

Unfortunately, I would give a higher score to this game had I played it on any other platform. The online component has the potential to make this a wonderful sports addition, with ranked matches following a streaming schedule (mimicking the around-the-clock nature of the Olympic Games), but unfortunately the Stadia userbase was so barren that I wasn’t able to test this out. I hope that there can be some sort of cross-platform compatibility in a future update, because I’d love to test my mettle against human opponents around the world. As it stands, I feel like I’m the only person playing this game on Stadia, and as such it’s pretty lonely. If you plan on getting this game on Stadia, I strongly recommend getting another local player with you; you’ll have an immensely better time with someone in local multiplayer.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 goes for a family-friendly approach that works, but can't compete with the fun of the Mario & Sonic titles.

Olyimpic Games Tokyo 2020 - The Official Videogame doesn't have many sports, but has enough gameplay variety to keep you entertained with the multiplayer, smashing buttons in atletism or playing arcade versions of football, basketball or baseball. If you're playing solo, it won't last you long.

‎The variety of disciplines is good enough for all of us to find more than one option that we like, and some like table tennis or judo have advanced controls that will take us quite a few hours to master if we want to win (forget only to club buttons). Of course the game has limitations, especially if we focus on the single-player experience, plus some sports are far below in fun, which will make them ostracize probably. Despite this, it is ‎‎a sports game for the whole family that I recommend especially if you like to compete with friends.‎

SEGA tried to give a fresh spin to the classic multievent Olympics game and mostly did. The mix of arcade vibes and quite unusual choices in terms of disciplines works well and the game is fun, but its structure is pretty lacklustre and multiplayer is too much limited to shine properly.

As one of the better Olympic Video Games, Tokyo 2020 provides a lot of fun whether you prefer playing solo, with a friend, or with folks online. Also, not all of its events may be gold medal worthy but its charming presentation certainly is.

The official game to the biggest sports event in the world offers an interesting variety of events to compete in, both online and offline. The controls are surprisingly varied and easy to pick up. The cartoony style might not be to anyone's taste, but the many customizations and wild outfits are a fun note.

An undoubtedly satisfying game, even if it is not free of flaws and, at times, can be too arcade-y. Many different and compelling disciplines are accompanied by some AI and control issues that somewhat undermine the playability of some of them. Nonetheless, SEGA's new Olympic game can provide many hours of healthy fun, especially if played with friends.

We loved SEGA's Olympic proposal: Tokyo 2020 Olympics - The official video game is fun and enjoyable to play. We would have liked some more discipline and above all some whole new game modes (maybe a "historical" to relive some legendary records). Overall, SEGA's multi-event title works and will give decidedly pleasant afternoons and evenings to live in the family in pursuit of the Olympic dream. See you in Paris 2024!

I say this is a great game to have in your collection and I'd even recommend it for party game night or to just invite an online friend to so friendly competition. Create your own play by play and enjoy your time at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo 2020.

As everyone knows, I love Japan. I'm also a die hard fan of the Olympics, and a person that sets up four or five screens as the Olympics runs in order to watch as many different events as possible. I've been looking forward to both Tokyo 2020 Olympics ever since the country won the opportunity to host the event, and this game more than satisfies me as a fan of all of the above. Once again, import it, as it is fully localised in English, and if you ever see a green, twin-tailed girl setting records while looking awesome in a school uniform, be sure to send me a digital wave.
