Overwatch 2 came to the video game market with a completely new formula: free-to-play and with a Battle Pass to unlock and complete. In addition, the number of gamers in matches was reduced from 6vs6 to 5vs5. Blizzard has been able to focus well on the elements that made the first chapter a cult for first-person-shooter games: iconic characters, a refined graphical style, and captivating gameplay. It cannot be called a true sequel, as the skeleton of the game still turns out to be the one that was until recently playable in the first chapter.

I hope the allure of what makes Overwatch as a game and a unique world can be seen to newcomers despite the negative cloud that is surrounding much of it. In terms of play, Overwatch 2 is more fun to play than it has ever been. We are in luck, however, as Blizzard has clearly been keenly listening to the community since the launch of the game didn't go very smoothly, and the potential for more fixes and fine-tuning seem like it's their biggest priority.

Overwatch 2 came to fix some problems of the first title, improved the graphics, the gameplay and brought some new characters. The bugs that it presents are correctable and, although annoying, they do not harm the fun that the game offers to the players. Was it really necessary to release a new game instead of just doing an update? Not really. However the content is there and there is really a (minimally) significant improvement compared to the first title.

Overwatch 2 delivers the same fun gameplay as the first game, but feels lackluster as a sequel. The greatest sin that Overwatch 2 commits is the way an unrewarding and sluggish progression system, combined with an exorbitant monetization system, makes loot boxes look good.

Overwatch 2 isn’t the grand reinvention that many believed it was going to be. It’s still Overwatch, for the better or for the worse. However, in my opinion, it is still by far the best multiplayer shooter out there right now and its core mechanics never seem to get old. It’s just a big shame a solid core is being massively let down by an aggressive monetisation system and lack of gameplay rewards.

It's hard to build a tower, but it's really easy to break it down. Instead, you can check the areas that were previously unfortunate and build them stronger. It remains to be seen whether Blizzard and Overwatch will take this opportunity to showcase their great gaming services again.

The number '2' next to the word Overwatch is just a number, nothing more. Before the title can take the final form of an actual sequel, we should most likely wait until 2023. Changes to heroes, maps, game modes, and twists to Overwatch's economic model seem more like part of a major update. As a hero shooter, however, Overwatch 2 is still galvanising, and the shift to 5vs5 matches has created a new balance between strategy and brashness.

While this might not be a “true” sequel to some, it very well could be a great new experience for someone else. A lot of thought and care has gone into refreshing the Overwatch experience, resulting in a compelling reason to jump back in for old fans and new players alike.

Unless the studio reverts its unwise focus on individuality and five-on-five play, then Overwatch 2 will likely remain a disappointing and fundamentally unfulfilling game that has frustratingly taken the place of its vastly superior predecessor.

Overwatch 2 probably didn’t need to be billed as a full sequel or have a number put at the end of its name. It offers more changes than the average update, but billing it as a major update to the game would have been more honest. Still, marketing is marketing and doesn’t change that there are a lot of changes here that will make Overwatch fans who haven’t played in some time want to jump back in and see what all the fuss is about. Overwatch 2 remains a fantastic shooter, and now that you can play for free, any Switch player in need of a great multiplayer shooter should absolutely check it out.

Overwatch 2 is a rebirth for one of my favorite games of the past generation. Featuring great new heroes, gorgeous and well-balanced new maps, a new mode in Push that I’ve greatly enjoyed, and a progression system that feels about the same as most free-to-play titles it’s an easy recommendation for both new and returning players alike.

The sequel to 2016's Overwatch, titled simply Overwatch 2, is entertaining to play through but does not provide any game-changing mechanics. The foundation that made Overwatch so unique is in Overwatch 2, a game so full of character, variety, and charm that its rivals can't hold a candle to it. Overwatch 2 is a game that, with some careful tweaks from Blizzard, has the potential to carry on its epic legacy for generations to follow.

Within Overwatch 2 lies the framework of what made its predecessor so special – a game bursting at the seams with personality, eclecticism, and undeniable charm that its competition can’t seem to match. A game that, after some thoughtful changes by Blizzard, could shape up to continue its monumental legacy for many, many years to come.

Not everyone is going to be a fan of the changes and I'm certain many fans will be incensed with the way Blizzard has monetised Overwatch 2 but I'm also certain those some fans will be booting up the game on day one and playing until their eyeballs bleed. Overwatch is back and it's better than ever.
