If taken as a simple FPS, Metal: Hellsinger would be an average one, due to non-stellar graphics, short levels and repetitive boss fights. But add its heavy metal rhythm game gameplay to the mix, and you'll find yourselves captivated by the challenge of flawlessly executing every level, aiming to obtain the highest multiplier possible by hitting enemies following the great head-banging music tracks.

Metal: Hellsinger is not a particularly long game, but it is incredibly fun while it lasts. The unique rhythm-based combat is a lot of fun, especially as the heavy metal music picks up the better you do against the demon hordes.

This could’ve been an easy high concept to get wrong. The gunplay could’ve been stale and repetitive, but the way you increase damage, points, and unlock perks during combat relies on hitting targets in streaks, choosing a loadout that plans for any and every type of threat and hitting them reliably on beat. The environments aren’t quite as varied as we’ve seen in recent FPSes, or even something like Devil May Cry, which plays around in a similar aesthetic sandbox. But they’re utilized well, and they’re designed to keep the player moving and dancing even with obstacles in their road, a harder conceptual ask than it seems, and one that certainly asks the player to shoulder their weight. Metal: Hellsinger isn’t an easy game by any stretch, but one that’s short enough and forgiving enough to encourage bashing your head against the wall multiple times to get it right or score higher, and smiling a bloody grin at even meager progress.

Metal: Hellsinger may be one of the best straightfoward ego-shooters in recent times because of its awesome soundtrack. Buyers get a metal album with several big metal singers in addition to a basic, fun and fast-paced shooter. The only things missing in this exceptional trip to hell are puzzles, secrets and a little bit more variety. Metalheads who like ego-shooter games and shooter fans who don't hate metal should play the demo, at the very least. If someone is really into both, this game is pretty much a must buy.

Metal: Hellsinger is a raw and old-style FPS with a frantic rhythm mechanics that make the rhythmic-musical element a valid support for an otherwise derivative gameplay.

With vocals from the likes of Trivium’s Matt Heafy and System of a Down’s Serj Tankian, the music of Metal: Hellsinger will go down a treat with metal fans. The fact that it’s married with gameplay that is equally impressive, then, should speak volumes. This is a unique first-person shooter that not only uses music to drive the action, but also uses it as a reward. And with both music and gameplay of such a high standard, only those who absolutely abhor metal need not jump in.

The elements are there to create something truly special, but right now Metal: Hellsinger feels more like a Doom Eternal mod than it does a standalone title.

In a way, it’s the FPS genre that grants players a kind of agency that rhythm games haven’t — the freedom and exhilaration of performance. You can execute kills to the beat of your internal pulse, with the act of shooting bodies and popping heads forming a pleasing rhythm. That’s why playing “Metal: Hellsinger” can almost feel like you’re holding the drumsticks yourself, as you blaze through demon hordes with a percussive flow of your own.

There isn’t anything like Metal: Hellsinger. Diehard metal fans will no doubt fall in love with it instantly, but the overall experience is satisfying and compelling enough to serve as a gateway into the metal genre for newcomers. It perfectly embodies the passion, energy, and emotion that all metalheads share.

Though a lacklustre story and uninspired enemy variation may bring it down somewhat, Metal: Hellsinger is the best a rhythm FPS has ever felt.

Metal: Hellsinger is definitely worth your time. Because of the music, the carnage, and the very unusual gameplay with tons of potential (even though it is a short game).

I really found myself engrossed with Metal: Hellsinger, and the solid FPS gunplay paired with a challenging rhythm mechanic keeps you pretty engaged throughout. It's a neat concept that certainly hasn't worn out its welcome so far, and I'd certainly like to see it expanded upon in the future, so hopefully a sequel or DLC won't be out of the question. Definitely check it out Metal: Hellsinger if any of this sounds intriguing, you won't be disappointed.

The developers behind the project had a specific niche of players they wanted to target, and delivered in spades. You need to like heavy metal, DOOM and rhythm games in order to enjoy this innovative, slightly flawed, but ultimately amazing experience. Brutal, fast-paced, mechanically sound, replayable, and most importantly, a blessing for metalheads’ ears. You will need some time in order to get used to its mechanics, which feel confusing at first, but once everything clicks, you will have the loudest and bloodiest of times with this hellfest of a shooter.

The game itself will speak to a very niche group. Because, as everyone knows, metal music is not the most popular thing in the world. But for those who like it, I can tell you that you will have a great time. The game is still short for its price but the interest is always to improve your score in this type of game. This makes it possible to come back to it more than once. And it allows us to know the lyrics of the songs and to appreciate the artists. Lots of headbanging to be expected!

Metal Hellsinger is a refreshing take on traditional demon killing, Doom shooting, and rhythm based heavy death metal music. It features some truly immersive and satisfying gameplay mechanics, especially when you click with the beat and blow off demon heads while rocking out to the beat of System of a Down. However, the game's difficult learning curve and lack of variety may be off putting to some.
