CONSCRIPT Reviews
Conscript is a rare indie gem in the survival horror genre. Jordan Mochi's debut work aims to portray in videogames the terror of war and the inner battles of the soldiers who are unfortunately forced to live through it. With straightforward (but punishing) gameplay and an over-the-top artistic component, Conscript is an experience that deserves to be enjoyed by all fans of the genre.

For those survival horror fans who can lean into the lo-fi, top-down aesthetic, Conscript will be an engaging fusion of familiar elements with an under-used setting. Its sometimes frustrating traditionalism and abyssal bleakness is unlikely to win over new recruits.
The incredibly atmospheric CONSCRIPT once again demonstrates that even small teams with limited budgets can come up with surprisingly strong passion projects. If you’re looking for a WW1 game that immerses you in a fitting sense of despair, then CONSCRIPT comes highly recommended, unless the mention of Resident Evil-like gameplay triggers spontaneous feelings of desertion. The frequent backtracking, minimal inventory, sparse management, and occasionally awkward controls are things you'll have to accept, along with the digital footprints left in your ankles.

One of the most interesting approaches to survival horror, where monsters, zombies, and creatures are replaced by the horror of war and the melancholy of soldiers fighting to return home.

CONSCRIPT is the first title from Jordan Mochi and his studio Catchweight Studio, a 2D survival horror quite influenced by the classic mechanics of the first Resident Evil and masterfully set in the horrible and brutal First World War. The horror of war awaits us as we have not seen before. If you like the genre and you like the first Resident Evil with CONSCRIPT you will not fail despite some details to improve.

Conscript nails the classic survival horror tropes across its engaging gameplay, whilst its atmospheric storytelling ensures it’s one of the more unique releases of the genre. It definitely caught me off-guard on plenty of occasions with the horrors of war, and whilst it’s not necessarily a scary game in the conventional sense, it offers a cold and eerie outlook into the brutality of the First World War. It does have some imperfections and it can be pretty tough, but those who love old-school survival horror certainly won’t want to miss out on Conscript’s distinct yet undoubtedly dark foray into the genre.
Conscript may not deliver the usual horror many expect in a survival horror but what it does tell is a tense WWI narrative with its own brand of survival and combat that is a bit rough in places.
CONSCRIPT is incredibly atmospheric, with great ideas and loving homages to the survival game genre. While the tension wasn’t quite there for me, I’m sure others will find it in this otherwise incredible game.
At a time when big IPs with millions upon millions of dollars in backing fail to deliver, Conscript is an inspired yet fresh take on the classic Survival Horror formula. Its old-school sensibilities might turn off some players, but Jordan Mochi's grounded take on WW1 is slated to become a favorite for fans of the genre. Conscript is ugly...and all the better for it.
