STAR WARS: Episode I: Jedi Power Battles has its place as a simple, arcade game where mindlessly pressing buttons and accumulating points against low-intelligence enemies is what a Star Wars fan wants to do for a day, maybe even two, given the long length of the levels, which are 14 in total. If you have a friend who is a fan of the franchise, getting together, buying some drinks of your choice, and talking about Star Wars for five hours might be a good way to get the most out of the game, but otherwise, it won't be at the top of the list of Star Wars games for the Switch.

Much like most Star Wars product these days, Jedi Power Battles is a nostalgia driven cash-grab that fails to improve the game other than reflecting some surfaces and modernising the controls. It's inconsistent, frustrating and, most egregiously, gave Amidala Force powers. That bad feeling you have about this? You know it to be true.

Remember Jedi Power Battles, where you could play as a Jedi and jump and fight around like in Episode 1? They brought it back to modern consoles! Sadly, none of it is as good as I remembered it.

Star Wars Episode 1 Jedi Power Battles is still incredibly dated despite its updates and upgrades, to the point where it feels like only those who grew up with the game will have much fun here. While there absolutely is a gap in the market for a side-scrolling lightsaber-em-up in 2025 and this can be enjoyable in short blasts, its awkward camera, control, brutal combat and repetitive levels can be hard to get through. That said, Aspyr deserve full credit for making the game more approachable for new players with easier difficulties and a wider character roster.

Star Wars: Episode I - Jedi Power Battles is a game with interesting ideas, but limited by its technical execution and lack of improvements. Recommended for Star Wars fans looking for a dose of nostalgia, but with patience to deal with the challenges imposed by its age.

The remastered Star Wars: Episode I - Jedi Power Battles is the relaunch of a very, very dated game. Dated in structure, in gameplay, in animations. In everything. The improved graphics, cleaned-up soundtrack, and new extra content make this version more dignified, but the game still remains an object of mystery: is there really any point in relaunching even the most mediocre games of the past without even trying to fix the problems?

Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles is a 25 year old game that made a surprised return in 2025. It's driven by nostalgia but the old school graphics, issues, and even updated features keep a fun game that Star Wars fans will appreciate.

For those who fondly remember the prequel era, you’ll get a little kick out of it. However, its dated mechanics and simplistic gameplay mean it’s likely to appeal more as a curiosity than a must play title.

Aspyr's remastered version successfully captures the essence of the original 2000 release, while modernising the controls, updating the visuals and offering a slew of new features including brand new unlockable playable characters for added replayability.

I very quickly got through easy mode in a few hours and jumped straight into Jedi mode which lasted a little longer. If you have never played Jedi Power Battles, while short this Remaster is a must. If you have played it, it’s a great nostalgia hit for a rainy weekend romp down memory lane.

Arm yourself with patience, however, as many game mechanics are a bit undercooked and unprecise, with a lot of bizarre level designs and features that didn’t quite receive the polish they needed, and that this remaster hardly really improved upon. As a quite minimal upgrade to a forgotten but solid game, clearly this one’s for the hardcore fans, who can jump back to the similarly flawed but enjoyable prequel trilogy’s beginnings.

Unfortunately, Star Wars: Episode I: Jedi Power Battles is the prime example why not every game should be remastered, let alone considered for the remaster treatment. The combat is archaic and clunky. While I can understand that back in 2000, this was passable and borderline revolutionary, this doesn’t cut it in 2025. This game is clearly for those who hold a fond place in their heart for it. If like me, this would be your first attempt at this game, highly recommend skipping it. There are a bevvy of better beat’em ups available. Never thought playing as Darth Maul would make him such a pathetic weakling.

Star Wars: Episode One: Jedi Power Battles Remastered could have been a charming beat’em up and fixed the list of issues that plagued it several years ago. However, with no real changes to gameplay, visuals, or its structure, Jedi Power Battles is the same bad Star Wars game it was 25 years ago. While co-op can alleviate some of the tedium and frustration in the controls, platforming, and combat, there are simply better games out there that also provide a better playing experience.

The remastered version of STAR WARS: Episode I: Jedi Power Battles brings a classic from the PlayStation and Dreamcast era back to life with new accessibility features, modernized controls, and extras that enrich the experience. Aspyr has balanced necessary improvements with respect for the essence of the original title. As previously mentioned, I don’t even think this is Aspyr’s fault. Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles is just a terrible game at its core, so all the polishing treatment in the world wouldn’t have fixed its many, MANY problems. It’s a clunky, hilariously ugly, and poorly designed beat ’em up which, at times, feels so janky and unpolished, it almost becomes a funny experience.

The controls and battles are clumsy, the hit feedback sometimes seems like it came from hell, and the content not taken from the film is sometimes quite strange. At the same time, however, the title can be entertaining for a few hours if you consider it a time capsule from the year 2000.

Aspyr has been having a good run bringing back old classics, with their recent release of some of the Soul Reaver games last December, but looking at their work with Star Wars titles in particular, there’s something to be said about the resulting products. That’s not to say that they’ve not been doing good work since there’s only so much you can polish a game that wasn’t a gem to begin with. Then again, given the amount of attention that Raziel’s adventures got and how they were improved upon for their remasters, it’s a head-scratcher why the same could not be done for this as well. Maybe if Nightdive Studios were the ones doing it, perhaps that would have happened.
