With Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, Square Enix has succeeded in a delicate balancing act: modernizing two cornerstones of the JRPG genre without betraying their heritage. It's not without its flaws—the minimalist interface, some timid animations, and hints of old-school grinding recall the dated origins of these installments—but the rewrites, the enriched exploration, the revamped combat, and the polished presentation breathe new life into these classics. Supported by sumptuous art direction and a reorchestrated soundtrack that elevates every region explored, these remakes offer a respectful, accessible, and surprisingly generous return to the series' roots. An ideal compilation for rediscovering the foundations of the saga, or for understanding how Dragon Quest became one of the pillars of the JRPG genre.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is a shining example of how to celebrate gaming history without losing what made it so damn special in the first place. Square Enix have managed to take two of the genre’s most formative and beloved RPGs and rebuild them into something that feels both familiar and fresh, all whilst maintaining the classic spirit of the original escapade… it’s excellent. The HD-2D presentation is breath-taking, the accessibility options make these once-daunting classics approachable for just about anyone, and the additions to both the narrative and the gameplay help make the adventures feel more substantial than ever before. And sure, the high encounter rate can test your patience and some of the dungeons could have used a bit more creative reworking, but those are small blemishes on what is otherwise an exceptional revival.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake brings excellent new versions of two very important classics in the history of the genre. Square Enix managed to continue the wonderful work done in DQIII HD-2D Remake and introduced very good new features and improvements, modernizing two classics for current platforms. Despite some hiccups with DQI, the package itself is highly recommended for fans of the genre and veterans of the franchise.

Both of the comparatively simpler RPGs in the franchise have been given new touches that make this version a great choice for both long-time fans and those who are not yet very familiar with the genre and would like to experience these classics.

Dragon Quest II's bigger story, party system, and better gameplay make it probably the better game. They work well together to make a package that honors the Erdrick trilogy and the past of JRPGs. DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake is great because they are both easy to play and hard.

Square Enix have gone above and beyond honoring the original duology's legacy, whilst addressing virtually every single flaw both games originally had. Dungeons are massive labyrinths that'll challenge you every step of the way; the world is dense with secrets for those who can't help but explore every nook & cranny; and the series' deceptively deep combat is equal part addictively fun and rewardingly strategic.
