These are two very demanding games, and their greatest strength lies in their role as an archaeological review of the origins of a genre as beloved as turn-based JRPGs.

In the same collection we find a simple game, yes, yet still capable of surprising JRPG lovers, and a beautiful pulpy adventure with three characters plus one semi-unseen (or rather, unseen).

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is a collection that doesn't seek to impress, but to preserve. It is a bridge built between two opposing eras, an act of love towards a saga that has shaped the identity of the modern JRPG. The narrative additions make sense, the quality of life is robust, and the HD-2D style achieves surprising maturity. There remain structural limitations that are impossible to ignore, direct legacies of the original games, but the project does not fail: on the contrary, it succeeds exactly in the goal for which it was created.

The Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake revitalizes two foundational JRPGs with stunning visuals, meaningful narrative expansions, and smart quality-of-life improvements. While some purists may take issue with modern conveniences and simplified dungeon layouts, the remakes deliver a near-definitive experience that bridges nostalgia with accessibility. With a stronger emotional core and improved gameplay balance, this collection elevates the Erdrick Trilogy into essential territory for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake delivers charming worlds, meaningful character moments, and gorgeous retro-modern visuals, even if its old-school combat still feels stiff and luck-dependent.

Despite its issues, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is a beautiful collection that modernizes these games in many compelling ways. In doing so, however, it loses the identity of the first game and only offers band-aids for the issues of the second title. These are still incredibly basic RPGs which will mostly appeal to long time fans of the series, but they’re likely the best versions of these classic titles.
Even with all the upgrades, these remain old school fantasy adventures at heart. Their charm comes from their simple stories, earnest characters, and classic turn based battles that helped define the genre. What the remake achieves so well is balancing that vintage appeal with modern readability and improved pacing, making both quests approachable without losing their original personality. Taken together, Dragon Quest I and II HD 2D Remake feels like a lovingly restored treasure. It honors the history of the role playing genre while making the earliest steps of the Erdrick trilogy more enjoyable than ever for both returning fans and new adventurers.
Beyond the visual splendour and musical reverence, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake carries a subtler significance, one that reaches beyond nostalgia and into cultural memory. They are monuments to a genre that defined generations. In an age obsessed with cinematic universes and narrative complexity, Dragon Quest’s simplicity feels refreshing. It reminds players that adventure doesn’t need convolution to be meaningful, it only needs sincerity.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake follows the path paved by last year’s refreshed third game. It’s a wonderful game that shares the same strengths and shortcomings as its predecessor. Fortunately, the positive aspects far outweigh the negatives, making this one a must-play for every JRPG fan. I'm happy to say that the Erdrick Trilogy has been created in a way truly worthy of this legendary hero.

With Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, Square Enix has succeeded in a delicate balancing act: modernizing two cornerstones of the JRPG genre without betraying their heritage. It's not without its flaws—the minimalist interface, some timid animations, and hints of old-school grinding recall the dated origins of these installments—but the rewrites, the enriched exploration, the revamped combat, and the polished presentation breathe new life into these classics. Supported by sumptuous art direction and a reorchestrated soundtrack that elevates every region explored, these remakes offer a respectful, accessible, and surprisingly generous return to the series' roots. An ideal compilation for rediscovering the foundations of the saga, or for understanding how Dragon Quest became one of the pillars of the JRPG genre.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is a shining example of how to celebrate gaming history without losing what made it so damn special in the first place. Square Enix have managed to take two of the genre’s most formative and beloved RPGs and rebuild them into something that feels both familiar and fresh, all whilst maintaining the classic spirit of the original escapade… it’s excellent. The HD-2D presentation is breath-taking, the accessibility options make these once-daunting classics approachable for just about anyone, and the additions to both the narrative and the gameplay help make the adventures feel more substantial than ever before. And sure, the high encounter rate can test your patience and some of the dungeons could have used a bit more creative reworking, but those are small blemishes on what is otherwise an exceptional revival.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake brings excellent new versions of two very important classics in the history of the genre. Square Enix managed to continue the wonderful work done in DQIII HD-2D Remake and introduced very good new features and improvements, modernizing two classics for current platforms. Despite some hiccups with DQI, the package itself is highly recommended for fans of the genre and veterans of the franchise.
