On PS5, I Hate This Place is an intriguing but uneven survival horror experiment that opens strong, looks fantastic, and has a handful of clever ideas but never quite brings them together. Its comic book visuals and sound design give it an immediately recognisable identity, and there are moments when stalking through the woods or picking through an underground bunker hints at something special. Unfortunately, generous resources, disjointed systems, undercooked storytelling, and rough presentation steadily erode the tension it works so hard to build.

I Hate This Place is an aesthetically perfected, stylish 80’s romp that unfortunately struggles with somewhat of an identity crisis. Despite drawing inspiration from some of the best work the 1980s has to offer, the game slaps together a bunch of conflicting gameplay mechanics, which would have been stronger if they just focused on a solitary idea. Worth a grab for the price it’s going for, doubly so if you’re a fan of 80’s horror.

I Hate This Place is a visually appealing video game based on a very attractive idea, but its execution is full of decisions that are difficult to justify. The lack of explanations, the imbalances in its survival approach, clunky combat, and a poorly crafted narrative make the experience suffer from start to finish.

I Hate This Place, as a game, is a great adaptation of the popular comics series. Fans of the comics will appreciate the story, but it’s also welcoming to newcomers. It may be rough around the edges, but it will keep players on their toes, test their patience, and force them to be resourceful. I Hate This Place shows great potential and is a true standout in the horror genre.

I Hate This Place gave me exactly what I want from survival horror: tension, ambience, and gameplay that keeps you hooked. The comic-book 80s look is a blast, and the soundtrack and environmental effects really elevate the mood. All in all, the experience comes together nicely and gives you a solid 8-hour horror trip.

I Hate This Place is a good adaptation of the comics for the virtual world, bringing faithful visuals, onomatopoeia for every character action, and an introduction to the comic universe. However, the game stumbles with imprecise aiming, a low variety of enemies, and an unengaging protagonist

I Hate This Place is still one of the most interesting independent horror movies I’ve seen in a while. It could be up there with the best games in its genre if it got some balance fixes and a bigger focus on challenge. As it stands, it’s a stylish, creepy, and often memorable trip that you should take, even if you don’t hate the place by the end.

I Hate This Place is a solid and recognisable horror game that stands out thanks to its strong visual identity and constantly oppressive atmosphere. It is not a game that focuses on action or spectacle, but on tension, survival and sensations. Some limitations in pacing and combat prevent the title from reaching higher levels, but the experience remains compelling and is especially recommended for those who enjoy slower, more reflective horror games.

By the time the credits rolled, I was left feeling disappointed more than anything else. There is a good game buried in here. With tighter economy balancing, more meaningful survival systems, and enemies that are dangerous without being bullet sponges, I Hate This Place could have been an easy recommendation. Instead, it feels like a promising idea that loses confidence in itself halfway through.

I Hate This Place has an incredible setting and fun enough, if not all that impressive, survival and combat mechanics, but could do a better job of introducing players to its world and story. I think the game will certainly find an audience, and those players will likely find themselves drawn to the comic-book franchise the game is inspired by.

The game I Hate This Place has a lot of good ideas that never quite work out. The graphics are memorable, the idea behind the game is interesting, and some of the mechanics, like sound-based stealth and exploring at night, really show potential. But an unfocused story, bad combat, slow progression, and technical problems keep it from reaching its full promise.

I Hate This Place takes its time and asks you to meet it halfway. It’s not about constant action or big moments, but about moving carefully, reading situations, and letting the world do the talking. Some parts don’t hit as cleanly as they should, but the overall experience holds together because the game knows what kind of mood it’s aiming for. If you’re into slower horror that rewards patience and atmosphere, there’s a lot here that works.

I Hate This Place has a strong identity and some genuinely compelling ideas. Its early hours make effective use of sound, darkness, and isolation, and its visual style gives it a personality that’s hard to ignore. But the systems underneath don’t push back hard enough to sustain that tension. Survival becomes comfortable, and for a horror game, that’s just a shame and something I can’t ignore. I didn’t hate my time with I Hate This Place, but it could have been so much better.

I Hate This Place is a game with a lot of heart and a killer art style, but it’s dragged down by rough execution. The visual flair and the sound-based stealth are great – especially since they help embrace comic book origin of the experience perfectly – but the awkward combat, confusing navigation, and unbalanced survival systems make it harder to love than it should be. It’s a decent time for die-hard fans of the genre or the comic, but it definitely feels a little too rough around the edges to make it an easy recommendation for everyone else.

Like a low-budget ’80s horror flick, I Hate This Place is all flash and no bang. Though it nails the vibe with its visuals and sound, rough voice acting aside, the gameplay is too shallow to hold up. After the early thrills fade, it’s mostly cheap jump scares without the depth to stay engaging.

I Hate This Place isn’t a bad indie game, but it’s a frustratingly uneven one, with strong atmosphere undercut by clunky mechanics and technical hiccups.

I Hate This Place has some great visual flair and interesting lore but unfortunately it's bogged down in an obtuse and often uninspired survival stealth adventure.

It took me roughly 9 hours to uncover the truth of I Hate This Place. The story, aesthetics, sound design (minus the VA), and combat were awesome. In fact, everything apart from the crafting was fantastic, making I Hate This Place well worth your time. Just don’t expect too much from the crafting and farm management elements.

I Hate This Place turned out to be a pretty fun idea in terms of concept, and it's good that the game gets on your nerves, but unfortunately, that's also due to the unnecessarily complex and confusing controls and sluggish gameplay. The game itself plays reasonably well, and after about eight hours you're pretty much through it, but I didn't really experience a sense of satisfaction. I Hate This Place is therefore a game for the hardened player who is truly looking for an intense top-down stealth and partly action game, and who is willing to accept the shortcomings.
