I Hate This Place Reviews
I Hate This Place has a strong identity and some genuinely compelling ideas. Its early hours make effective use of sound, darkness, and isolation, and its visual style gives it a personality that’s hard to ignore. But the systems underneath don’t push back hard enough to sustain that tension. Survival becomes comfortable, and for a horror game, that’s just a shame and something I can’t ignore. I didn’t hate my time with I Hate This Place, but it could have been so much better.
I Hate This Place is a game with a lot of heart and a killer art style, but it’s dragged down by rough execution. The visual flair and the sound-based stealth are great – especially since they help embrace comic book origin of the experience perfectly – but the awkward combat, confusing navigation, and unbalanced survival systems make it harder to love than it should be. It’s a decent time for die-hard fans of the genre or the comic, but it definitely feels a little too rough around the edges to make it an easy recommendation for everyone else.
Like a low-budget ’80s horror flick, I Hate This Place is all flash and no bang. Though it nails the vibe with its visuals and sound, rough voice acting aside, the gameplay is too shallow to hold up. After the early thrills fade, it’s mostly cheap jump scares without the depth to stay engaging.
I Hate This Place is full of interesting ideas and references to well-known horror stories. However, the technical state on PC is quite questionable, and various mechanics feel more like filler meant to artificially extend the playtime rather than provide real value.

I Hate This Place isn’t a bad indie game, but it’s a frustratingly uneven one, with strong atmosphere undercut by clunky mechanics and technical hiccups
I Hate This Place has some great visual flair and interesting lore but unfortunately it's bogged down in an obtuse and often uninspired survival stealth adventure.
It took me roughly 9 hours to uncover the truth of I Hate This Place. The story, aesthetics, sound design (minus the VA), and combat were awesome. In fact, everything apart from the crafting was fantastic, making I Hate This Place well worth your time. Just don’t expect too much from the crafting and farm management elements.
I Hate This Place turned out to be a pretty fun idea in terms of concept, and it's good that the game gets on your nerves, but unfortunately, that's also due to the unnecessarily complex and confusing controls and sluggish gameplay. The game itself plays reasonably well, and after about eight hours you're pretty much through it, but I didn't really experience a sense of satisfaction. I Hate This Place is therefore a game for the hardened player who is truly looking for an intense top-down stealth and partly action game, and who is willing to accept the shortcomings.

I quite enjoyed I Hate This Place and found the gameplay loop to be solid. While the story elements waver in their quality, the world built here is engaging and rich with detail. While Elena may not want to return to the ranch any time soon, I could easily see a sequel that really digs into some more of this wonderfully crafted world.
I Hate This Place had everything it needed to work: it has good ideas. However, the game fails to turn those good intentions into a truly engaging experience. The frustrating gameplay, unsatisfying combat, and above all, the countless technical issues end up outweighing the few successes.

After weighing all the pros and cons, I have to conclude that I Hate This Place floats somewhere between “I Hate This Place” and “I Love This Place,” because despite an abysmal, jank-filled start with annoying performance issues, it managed to keep me mildly entertained for about seven hours with its campy ’80s vibe and occasional paranormal quirks—like tongue-in-cheek whodunnit quests and the odd cow-beaming close encounter—but ultimately lacks the narrative depth to be memorable, making it a perfectly fine filler experience and little more.

I Hate This Place does a great job of creating an 80's vibe with a classic action-horror atmosphere. The story is interesting and dark, the protagonist kicks ass, and the action is fun and visceral.
