I Hate This Place Reviews
I Hate This Place is a game that oversells itself in the trailer and undershoots on the Switch, but still manages to be very enjoyable. The performance issues, visual compromises, and pared‑back crafting leave their mark on much of the experience, yet the core loop of sneaking, crafting, and blasting through strange supernatural threats has enough bite to carry it.When the action flows, it's easy to see what the developers were aiming for. It just depends on whether you're willing to look past the rough edges to enjoy what does work.
There are some moments of greatness, especially in its stealth gameplay and paranormal environments, where the exciting nature of the survival horror genre shines through, but those moments are quickly fleeting. I do recommend I Hate This Place to survival horror fans if there is nothing else to play and they're on a budget, but I wouldn't go into this game expecting the next big thing.
I Hate This Place is close to being a really good fusion of base building and isometric shooter, but never quite nails the game feel. Stealth is mostly a case of sneaking through vents, combat is repetitive and becomes too easy with more powerful weapons, and the base building parts function more like an idle game. To top it off, the story kind of fizzles out and the game ends just as the mechanics start to get established. There is a fun pulp horror experience here, but it doesn't meet its clear potential.
A sorely underdeveloped, crafting-orientated survival horror game, whose neat comic book art style isn’t enough to compensate for sub-par combat and storytelling.

I Hate This Place would have been perceived much more favorably if the developers had abandoned the survival elements and instead focused on exploring its deep lore and dynamic world.

I Hate This Place is a fun horror-lite game that's rarely startling, but always enjoyable.
I Hate This Place has some interesting ideas inspired by its comic-book origins, but its moment-to-moment gameplay is dull at the best of times and deeply frustrating at the worst.
I Hate This Place is a strong survival horror experience with smart mechanics, great monster design, and a compelling soundscape. Its flaws-pacing issues, stiff movement, and occasionally forced dialogue-hold it back from greatness, but they don't derail the experience. For fans of survival horror who enjoy tension, stealth, and atmosphere, this is absolutely worth your time.
Moody, comic-book survival horror experience that thrives on tension and disorientation, but clunky combat gets in the way
The Horned Man is ready to get you...
You won't hate "I Hate This Place", but you might actually like this survival game set in a spooky wilderness. It could have been more expansive, and certain aspects could have been improved, but it plays well.

With its comic book visual style, isometric viewpoint and focus on crafting, I Hate This Place is a unique entry in the survival horror genre. It's just a shame that it's let down by gameplay that feels rough around the edges and a lacklustre story.
I Hate This Place has good ideas, but its execution misses the mark. A lacklustre story, not enough horror, and disjointed mechanics likely won't appeal to survival horror fans.
I Hate This Place has a killer aesthetic and some excellent survival-horror instincts, especially when sound, stealth, and night pressure align. But... rough storytelling, clunky usability, and underfed progression keep it from becoming the cohesive comic-horror it so clearly wants to be.
I Hate This Place is one of those games that draws from strong source material and has a solid concept but fumbles its gameplay mechanics. The story is engaging, and I genuinely enjoyed playing as Elena in this comic book inspired world. Unfortunately, broken gameplay mechanics make it a frustrating experience.
On PS5, I Hate This Place is an intriguing but uneven survival horror experiment that opens strong, looks fantastic, and has a handful of clever ideas but never quite brings them together. Its comic book visuals and sound design give it an immediately recognisable identity, and there are moments when stalking through the woods or picking through an underground bunker hints at something special. Unfortunately, generous resources, disjointed systems, undercooked storytelling, and rough presentation steadily erode the tension it works so hard to build.
I Hate This Place is an aesthetically perfected, stylish 80’s romp that unfortunately struggles with somewhat of an identity crisis. Despite drawing inspiration from some of the best work the 1980s has to offer, the game slaps together a bunch of conflicting gameplay mechanics, which would have been stronger if they just focused on a solitary idea. Worth a grab for the price it’s going for, doubly so if you’re a fan of 80’s horror.
I Hate This Place is a visually appealing video game based on a very attractive idea, but its execution is full of decisions that are difficult to justify. The lack of explanations, the imbalances in its survival approach, clunky combat, and a poorly crafted narrative make the experience suffer from start to finish.

I Hate This Place, as a game, is a great adaptation of the popular comics series. Fans of the comics will appreciate the story, but it’s also welcoming to newcomers. It may be rough around the edges, but it will keep players on their toes, test their patience, and force them to be resourceful. I Hate This Place shows great potential and is a true standout in the horror genre.
