It's true that you don't need to be a fan of the series to enjoy this title, although its followers will certainly have a very special time. Capcom delivers a delightful return for this spin-off, one you shouldn't miss in the Xbox catalog, and it's one of the biggest hits of March, with the potential to become one of the biggest surprises of 2026.

Despite living in the shadow of the far more successful Monster Hunter mainline games, Monster Hunter Stories continues to grow into its own as an excellent role-playing game franchise. In fact, it has the better story as far as Monster Hunter franchises go. While Monster Hunter Stories 3 improves on its predecessors in many ways such as visuals, Twisted Reflection also takes a step back with a less cohesive endgame and the removal of multiplayer. Most everything else is better, however, and the characters and monsters remain a bright spot. If you’re a Monster Hunter fan who also loves JRPGs, give this one a shot for sure.
Capcom delivers an aesthetically pleasing world that's fun to explore in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection. Whether riding your monster, scaling cliffs, swimming, or digging, the game offers variety that keeps you busily exploring. The plot and some gameplay systems can feel slower-paced at times. But a likable cast and entertaining side quests bring balance.

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is an engaging turn-based take on the MH series with plenty to do and a heartfelt narrative.
While the more dramatic narrative and engaging cast of characters were appreciated, if you didn’t enjoy the largely luck-based combat in previous entries, then the fact that those elements have not been altered much won’t impress you. Capcom has delivered a compelling world to explore in Monster Hunter Stories 3, and if you can look past some of the combat system’s drawbacks, you’ll likely have a good time with it.
Even though I have many complaints with every single Stories game so far, I have also found each of them to be better than the last. Monster Hunter Stories 3 isn't exactly where I'd want the series to be just yet - but it's very nearly there, and I think, for many, this will be one of the most satisfying monster collection RPGs on the market at the moment.
At the end of the day, Monster Hunter Stories 3 is a game that wants you to spend a LOT of time playing it – but it respects that time also.

For fans of Japanese RPGs, the changes and trade offs in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection are largely welcome. Gameplay-wise, there's not much here to win over those who aren't already fans of this Monster Hunter spin-off series, but thanks to numerous gameplay enhancements, a more mature story and full voice acting, Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is undoubtedly a cut above its predecessors.
