The Fatal Frame series has long stood as a stable within the horror genre, and once you experience Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, you will understand exactly why. It is a pure psychological horror experience in its atmosphere, with a mysterious and gripping story that remains compelling until the very last moments. Although there are clear technical issues and some flaws rooted in its old gameplay design, they do not prevent it from being one of the standout experiences in the genre and a fitting entry point into one of the most important horror game franchises.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake faithfully preserves the original’s haunting story while enhancing visuals and immersion, though early balancing issues slightly dampen its otherwise strong return.

A faithful remake that preserves the essence of a horror classic, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly delivers a haunting atmosphere, strong psychological tension, and improved visuals and audio. However, its slow pacing, repetitive combat, and dated mechanics may not appeal to all players, especially those seeking a more dynamic experience.

If you can look past the locked 60 FPS on PC, the occasionally clunky combat stamina, and the exhausting late-game encounter rates, you will find one of the most culturally rich, terrifying adventure games on the market. It is a faithful, loving restoration of a PS2 classic that deserves to be played—just make sure you have a comfort item nearby.
The remake of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is exactly what a good remake should be: respectful to the original, but modern enough to work today. However, not everything feels equally fresh. The gameplay can sometimes feel old-fashioned and the controls could have been a bit tighter here and there. Yet the core of the game remains solid. The atmosphere is fantastic, the story is surprisingly emotional and the camera system remains one of the most original ideas in the horror genre. This is not a horror that flushes you with action. This is horror that slowly creeps under your skin. And by the time you notice it... it's usually too late.

The blend of horror and mystery in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a success, delivering an engaging story, an artistic direction that enhances the overall atmosphere, and a unique gameplay identity built around the camera mechanic. Despite some flaws and technical issues, it remains a memorable experience worth trying—especially for horror fans.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly: Remake is a great game. It remakes the original in a charming and well considered way, though is not without its own technical flaws. Where the graphics and gameplay are improved the stealth and performance take away resulting in a not quite satisfying level of polish. The choice to rename the series in non-US regions is also a bit of a mis-step for a lot of players who will miss the “Project Zero” name going forwards, but given the end product? We’ll adjust!
Unfortunately, Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly Remake is an unnecessary remake that wasted Team Ninja’s skillset as a developer; they should’ve been hard at work on Ninja Gaiden 4 instead. The fact that it looks and feels like a late PS3/Xbox 360 game is telling. Janky movement, clunky/jerky combat. Can’t help but feel that a simple improved port of the original would’ve been better. It’s not a bad game, it just feels generic. Unless you’re a diehard of the series, you can skip this.Ho pefully they focus on creating new entries without restraints of past stories instead of ruining the legacy of the original trilogy.
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is a faithful reconstruction of a survival horror fan favourite. Team Ninja updated the visuals and added new features like the hand-holding mechanic and willpower gauge, and these additions work without sacrificing any of the creeping dread. Certain combat encounters can feel like a marathon and some minor technical hiccups pop up on the Nintendo Switch 2, but the spatial audio and cursed village make it a must-play for fans of the genre.
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake captures what made the original so memorable, from its suffocating atmosphere to its brilliant camera-based combat, but it also preserves many of the frustrations that defined survival horror in an earlier era.
While preserving the essence of the original, *Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake* brings the terrifying experience to modern platforms, making it accessible to a wider audience.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake delivers an uneven experience because, just as its atmospheric horror is superb, the combat mechanics remain frustrating. With so much of the gameplay hinging on the Camera Obscura's unwieldy controls, the tension and dread carefully built by the remake are often undermined.
Koei Tecmo has absolutely blown it out of the water with this release, so big props to the team behind it. When it comes to doing remakes well, I’d put this up on the pedestal alongside games like the Resident Evil remakes. It is an absolute must-play for survival horror fans, and if you’re curious on what survival horror looks like outside of your typical association, you’ll definitely want to check out Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake.
More than twenty years after its original release, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly once again proves why it is considered one of the most memorable survival horror titles of its generation. This remake successfully preserves the essence of the original game, improving its graphics and gameplay without altering its identity. The result is an intense and melancholic horror experience capable of resonating with both new players and those who loved the original on PlayStation 2. The village of Minakami Village remains a place that is difficult to escape from and perhaps that is precisely its most unsettling charm.
