It's not a flawless photograph, but Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is memorable, terrifying, and artistically stunning.
I don’t mind spending time in Minakami Village (even if I never, ever want to go there in-person), but the majority of Crimson Butterfly is spent behind the camera, which is where I was the most frustrated and, importantly, not scared.
Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly is a horror classic that’s unfortunately weighed down by questionable design changes.
Fatal Frame 2 isn't quite the home run some may have hoped for, but it's an overall enjoyable and worthwhile experience that I'd suggest picking up at some point.
Still, if you were a die-hard fan of the original Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, you'll enjoy what Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo have created here.
A mostly successful remake that reimagines Fatal Frame 2 for the modern day, and while it can veer a little too much into action territory it’s still an impressively horrifying video game.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is probably the best of the series so far, with an atmosphere and narrative that will hook you in and leave you feeling incredibly immersed. There is a great deal of depth to the camera-based combat and exploring the village is a wonderfully atmospheric experience. I could have done without the stalker enemies and the game throws a vast amount of lore and optional side stories at you at times, but the core game deserves to push the series into wider appreciation.
A beautiful game that is often chilling, any horror game fan will want to check out Team Ninja’s remake.
This is now the best way to play Fatal Frame II.
This series was the best sleeper horror series during the PS2 era, and I would love for players today to experience the original trilogy in all of its glory.
An excellent technical overhaul and gameplay update for one of the best horror games of the PlayStation 2 era. *Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake* takes the original title and brings it into the modern era with targeted gameplay enhancements, new storylines, and top-notch audio and video quality-all of which bode well for the future of the series.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a hauntingly beautiful reimagining that successfully modernizes one of the series' most iconic entries with modern visuals and new mechanics. While the atmosphere and puzzles are masterfully executed, the experience is slightly dragged down by a combat system that can feel more frustrating than fun. However, the expanded story and atmospheric overhaul still make this a must-play for fans of the series and survival-horror fans in general.
Regardless, this is still a remake of a classic. Despite its flaws, fans and newcomers can immerse themselves in a pillar of the survival horror genre, one that continues to haunt with its eerie village and tragic story.
Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is arguably one of the scariest games we've ever played. Team Ninja has somehow managed to make an already terrifying game even more so, turning Minakami Village into a visually striking and tense playground for fear. The Camera Obscura combat remains novel and unique, but clunky controls and some drawn-out encounters can frustrate.
When people talk about wanting remakes, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is exactly the quality of remake they have in mind. Overall, this is a fantastic way to experience a beloved classic on modern hardware.
The logic of Team Ninja’s brutal skill-intensive action games is there, yet its admixture with classic survival horror’s slow-paced interest in maintaining player desperation produces a system as liable to inspire frustration as fear.
Personally, this game made me want to return to the series and enjoy games I missed back in the day, and I'm sure that if you liked the franchise, this game won't disappoint you in the slightest. If you're new to this IP, welcome! This is the best entry point and an incredible example of survival horror that continues to add great hits to its list.

Once the dust has been cleared, one could say that Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is the same game released almost twenty-five years ago, simply given a thorough facelift.
