Final Fantasy Resonance recaptures the fantasy of classic RPGs in an adventure filled with crystals, friendships, and turn-based combat. While the HD-2D visuals impress during action sequences, a predictable narrative and some drawn-out battles hold the experience back.

Final Fantasy Resonance turns a failed gacha into a solid RPG, with great combat and charm, even if its story mostly repeats Brave Exvius beats.

HD-2D gives Final Fantasy Resonance the old-school charm I’ve wanted to see from the series, while its Vision system and stagger-based combat add welcome depth to familiar turn-based battles. The story is fairly forgettable, but the adventure itself makes a convincing case for more classic-style Final Fantasy games.

FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is a pleasant surprise that captures the best elements of the franchise, delivering an engaging RPG with strategic, enjoyable combat, deep customization, and plenty of opportunities to experiment with Visions and Espers. Its beautiful pixel art, rewarding exploration, side quests, and hidden secrets kept me invested for over 50 hours, despite some predictable plot twists, repetitive late-game battles, occasional performance issues, and the lack of Brazilian Portuguese localization. More than a nostalgic tribute, RESONANCE offers a complete RPG experience filled with memorable references, satisfying mechanics, and plenty of content for both longtime fans and newcomers. Ultimately, it is not just a gift to fans, but a great FINAL FANTASY in its own right.

Final Fantasy Resonance is an engaging RPG that captures the charm of classic JRPGs through rewarding exploration, strategic turn-based combat, compelling characters, and a polished HD-2D presentation complemented by a memorable soundtrack. Despite some pacing issues and repetitive encounters, its strengths outweigh its flaws, proving that the traditional Final Fantasy formula can still deliver a captivating experience. Balancing nostalgia with thoughtful execution, Resonance is a worthwhile adventure for fans eager to explore fantastical worlds and enjoy challenging turn-based battles.

Resonance looks at elements that Final Fantasy abandoned or modified over the past few decades and asks what would happen if they were simply produced again with modern technology, budget, and expertise. The answer is an extraordinarily well-executed traditional JRPG. I missed picking four characters, looking at a turn order, and spending a few seconds thinking before taking action. I missed coming across a new town, chatting with residents, buying equipment, and heading out to wander across the overworld map. I missed that feeling of getting an airship and realizing that previously inaccessible places were suddenly part of my route. Resonance gives all of that back.

Final Fantasy Resonance is an incredible reimagining of a beloved mobile game. While some parts can be frustrating, it’s not enough to diminish the overall stellar experience, and it’s easy to recommend to Final Fantasy and retro JRPG fans.

Final Fantasy Resonance is a title that could very well reshape the series going forward, if enough people get behind it. The turn-based combat is fantastic, and while the Vision system could use a bit of a refresh, it celebrates the legacy of this storied franchise in remarkable ways. Rain's adventure is one that is typical of the series, but the attention given to every single character here does elevate that typical story to new heights.

With a unique blend of classic and modern elements, Final Fantasy Resonance features a combination of a linear campaign, an impactful story, and extremely fun combat. It is an exceptional JRPG that revives the most classic style of the Final Fantasy series, while simultaneously evolving the formula in new directions.

Final Fantasy Resonance might not be a true HD-2D game, but makes up for that by delivering in almost every other way. A good story, great characters, music, quests, and a fantastic combat system make this a Final Fantasy you need to play.

Once you've gotten through the first few hours and the game finally unfolds its full potential, most of these criticisms turn out to be nitpicking. Nevertheless, there was certainly more potential here, and one shouldn't expect the innovative spirit of an "Adventures of Elliot".

Final Fantasy Resonance is a triumph in recreating and repurposing an almost decade-old mobile game. While it can stumble a little in the process, such as dungeons often being too small, or optional encounters being too repetitive, my issues with the game seem to revolve around simply wanting more. Resonance is a celebration of the traditional Final Fantasy formula and a reminder of just how damn well that formula still works. With a surprisingly deep cast of characters, a combat system full of variety and choice, fantastic visuals and a grand soundtrack to bring it all together, Final Fantasy Resonance isn’t just a worthy game in the series; it’s one of the best in the franchise.

'Final Fantasy Resonance' is a gift to fans who have been looking forward to a new Final Fantasy title crafted in HD-2D. From its visuals to its systems, the game is filled with elements that evoke nostalgia for the series' past. It also delivers an almost flawless remake experience. However, those hoping for something truly different may find themselves a little disappointed.

Final Fantasy Resonance may not be absolutely perfect, but this release is certainly a promising sign. Promising because it proves that Square Enix is indeed still capable of—and willing to—create good, classic turn-based Final Fantasy games.

Final Fantasy Resonance might not push the series forward in any radical way, but it is true to its name, highlighting the elements of Final Fantasy that have echoed throughout the series and resonated with fans over the decades. The Visions system sits at the core of the game, giving the series’ history a tangible place in both combat and character progression, and exemplifying Square Enix’s masterful reworking of familiar themes and mechanics. Despite some unfortunate spoilers and safe narrative design, Resonance’s stunning blend of 2D and 3D visuals, majestic soundtrack, engaging combat, and hours of rewarding content helps bring these elements together in an adventure that feels quintessentially Final Fantasy.

In a time where video games are so often divisive and trying to please everyone seems impossible, Final Fantasy Resonance might just be the closest game in a long time we’ve gotten to pulling that off.

Final Fantasy Resonance captures the appeal of classic Final Fantasy with strong writing, beautiful presentation, flexible Visions, engaging summons, and rewarding nostalgic connections. Limited maps, repetitive dungeons, delayed encounter controls, unclear dialogue choices, and overly forgiving early combat hold it back, but never overshadow its strengths. For me, it feels like the team’s best work—an adventure absolutely worth your time, with the potential to become a cult classic and one of its biggest successes outside Octopath.

While avoiding being outright bad in any regard, Final Fantasy Resonance does little to captivate the player. The combat system is by far the best element, but largely seems like a reworking of an idea more successfully executed in the Octopath franchise. And while moments of characterization are charming and well written, the actual narrative only pinballs between tropes until it winds up at a rote climax. Despite being positioned as a celebration of the series, it does little but half-heartedly play a couple of the hits and ask you if you remember the good old days.
