Puyo Puyo Tetris does a great job of combining two addictive puzzle games into a feverishly fun product. The story mode is surprisingly well done, and offers some nice replay value even for those familiar with both series. Alongside the healthy amount of unlockables, modes, and options, the online multiplayer in particular shines, being a huge source of entertainment. Even if you have little experience with Puyo Puyo or Tetris, this is a satisfying experience with plenty to offer regardless of skill level.

Puyo Puyo Tetris, even though it has an unnecesary and trivial campaign mode, makes an incredible fusion of both franchises, converging in a great acquisition for those who like strategic gameplay in an old-school but contemporary fashion.

Sonic Team tried to bring together two franchises as classic as peanut butter and/or chocolate, separately. But in combination, they mix about as well as oil and water.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is pure fun. I could see myself spending hundreds of hours perfecting my skills in both Puyo Puyo and Tetris, and playing quick games with friends during some downtime. While thirty dollars may seem steep for what is on its surface a simple puzzle crossover game, it is most definitely worth your time. I only hope that Sega continues to support Puyo Puyo in the future.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is a chaotic puzzle masterpiece. The mechanics of each of the core games remains untouched, so veterans of either one can jump in quickly. The interaction of the two games throughout the various modes blends in so well that the mash-up feels right instead of strange. The modes gives the player plenty to do, and the multiplayer is so expansive that there's bound to be at least one mode that someone will grow fond of. Fusion is where the challenge lies, and the blending of both core experiences into one hybrid mode is done so well that it's bound to get just as much playtime as the vanilla versions of the games it was inspired by. Though it is the only puzzle game on the system now, it is still the gold standard to which future puzzle games on the Switch can aspire. Unless you absolutely hate puzzle games, pick up Puyo Puyo Tetris.

There’s plenty on offer in Puyo Puyo Tetris and it looks great whilst showing it all off. It’s not just a great modern upgrade of one puzzle game, but two. It may be the kind of thing that looks crazy on paper but somehow Sonic Team have made it work.

With some solid gameplay - and there is lots of it to be found - Puyo Puyo Tetris might just be one of the definitive puzzle games of 2017, particularly on the Switch where the handheld, play-on-the-go nature fits it like a glove.

I can pick it up invaluable minutes of spare time, play in friendly bouts with others, or be seriously engaged and strategic – either on a large screen or on a tablet. It does not feel as if anyone is significantly disadvantaged in how they choose to approach Puyo Puyo Tetris, and that is something that I haven’t said about many games recently that have tried to balance the solo/co-op/online experience.

Tetriminoes and puyos may come from two very different worlds but Puyo Puyo Tetris serves as the perfect stage for both to shine.

It's kind of costly – especially on Switch – but, as the author's kid asks, "can you really put a price on getting mom to play games with us?"

This isn’t the best version of Tetris there has ever been, and I expect previous versions of Puyo Puyo have been more focused, but there’s no doubt that this chaotic mash-up of both, plus the exuberant – if overwhelming – presentation, make this a recommended purchase.

As a party game, Puyo Puyo Tetris provides an excellent use for Switch's detachable controllers. Propping a Switch up with its stand and passing a Joy-Con to a buddy is fun, and with so many modes to choose from you'll likely be playing for a long time.

An amazingly quirky, colorful and ever so slightly nutty return of an old classic and his new best friend. It had been a long time since I last thought about a good game of Tetris, and I had never even seen a Puyo Puyo before, but having these two games come together in such a way has been a true delight.

A simple and charming package, that presents two proven puzzle games with some extra modes that add variety but not much else.
