Sega's brilliant puzzler Puyo Puyo makes a long overdue return to the west as part of this outstanding package.

The beautifully presented Puyo Puyo Tetris has a ton of content, a really fun multiplayer with a lot of variations, and is very easy to pick up and play with just about anyone despite the slight balance issues. The Nintendo Switch is a great platform for it too, with its portability and non-threatening Joy-Con controllers. This is the type of game that offers an adequate challenge for even the most hardcore puzzle players with its Challenge modes, but is inviting for even the smallest of children and gaming newbies.

The crossover between the two classic puzzlers is a bit of a gimmick, but the huge range of modes for both games makes this the best version of either for years.

The classic Tetris and Puyo Puyo action is enjoyable, but the new modes are letdowns

Two classic puzzle games meet head-on to form Puyo Puyo Tetris, a great mashup with multiple ways to play.

While not the best game in either series, Puyo Puyo Tetris is still a great combination of two puzzle classics. Sometimes going together like peanut butter and jelly, other times more like peanut butter, and uh, something that doesn't go with peanut butter. All in all, a worthwhile addition to the slowly growing Switch library (or PS4 library, if spontaneous on-the-go multiplayer is not your jam).

Puyo Puyo Tetris is one of the best puzzle games I've ever played, not just because it's based on two mechanically sound, battle-tested puzzle philosophies, but because it goes all out and doesn't leave any room for an "extended edition." Grab it, take it on the go, and preach the gospel of Puyo Puyo.

Still, cost and value are always considerations, and as we saw with Super Bomberman R, the retail variant of the Switch edition is rather overpriced at $39.99. Asking price drops to $29.99 on the eShop and with both versions on PS4, so if you don't care about jewel cases or own both systems, then it's clear what to do. That said, after testing the Switch version I do recommend handheld mode wholeheartedly, as I've only ever enjoyed puzzling on the go and it bolsters pickup-and-play exactly as needed. Regardless, this is a game that delivers exactly what's described on the tin, and if you enjoy those things, you'll surely enjoy Puyo Puyo Tetris.

Honestly, the best way to experience Puyo Puyo Tetris is to gather some friends and play a local multiplayer session. There's a plethora of modes available and it's a blast to have people play each and every one of them. Despite single player and Online ranked matches being utterly relentless, Puyo Puyo Tetris is still a fun party game with a wholehearted recommendation nonetheless.

It's one of the longest, funniest and most complete puzzle games ever made. Either you look for solo fun or multiplayer madness, you'll find a delicatessen for your brains.

Puyo Puyo Tetris, even though it has an unnecesary and trivial campaign mode, makes an incredible fusion of both franchises, converging in a great acquisition for those who like strategic gameplay in an old-school but contemporary fashion.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is the not so trival encounter between two iconic puzzle game legends: a crossover full of options and possibilities that works well played alone, but becomes an absolute blast when played with friends (and therefore a perfect match for Nintendo Switch).

Other than one minor imbalance that could potentially be attributed to personal skill, there's no reason not to pick up Puyo Puyo Tetris. Even those who have long grown weary of the component games will find the well worn gameplay injected with new life with this melding.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is almost like three games in one. You get two classic puzzle games as well as a fascinating amalgamation of the two. There's no shortage of modes, and the offerings make for a game well suited to both newcomers and old pros.Support for all of the Switch's various control options, with the exception of the console's touch screen, good online play as well as up to four player local multiplayer make Puyo Puyo Tetris a no-brainer for Switch-owning puzzle fans out there. Even if you aren't exactly crazy about puzzlers, the pick-up-and-play nature of this title makes it worth a look if you're taking your Switch on the go.

While I still think Tetris is the better game in this match-up, and that it has a slight in-game advantage due to its faster speed, and that the voice acting can get grating after awhile, I loved my time with Puyo Puyo Tetris. It familiarized me with a puzzle game franchise and group of characters that I had never heard up before while also delivering a solid console Tetris experience, which makes it steeper price acceptable. I hope SEGA continues to bring over more Puyo Puyo games to the west, as it has the possibility of catching on just like Tetris did years ago on the Game Boy.

It's not surprising that combining two of the best puzzles games would result in a fantastic game, but it's astounding how well the two games that make up Puyo Puyo Tetris gel together. The game's marquee Fusion mode manages to make two very familiar series feel fresh, and it's some of the most fun I've had in the genre. On top of that, Sega has packed in over a dozen modes, many of which allow players to play straight Tetris or Puyo Puyo. It's truly the best of both worlds, and it ends up creating an essential puzzle game.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is a perfect blend of both Puyo Puyo and Tetris and gives us our first Puyo Puyo game in over ten years and while some of its modes aren't as thrilling, the new modes offer an exciting new take on the competitive puzzle genre.
