Now is a better time than ever to jump in and experience the hype. If these games are the current limit to what the 3DS can offer, then one can only hope that the Switch does the franchise proud.
Pokemon Ultra Moon expands on the original Sun/Moon plot and provides more post-game content, but is overall the same journey through Alola.
"The sooner the better" This may apply to Pok'mon Ultra-Sun and Ultra-Moon in many ways. While fresh memories from the previous episodes help to notice the small, delicate differences, with clever twists aimed at Alola's returning vacationers, the main story transformations happen rather late. Similarly, the additions are mostly interesting, even captivating, but they often lack more development to express their full potential, and overall flaws were not really addressed, in particular tedious pace and inconsistent challenge. However, the generous amount of commemorative - not to say recycled - content suggests Game Freak tried to reach some closure there, broken rules like the introduction of new species during this generation hinting that the series might seriously evolve in the future. There are still a few niggles in the game, such as the frame rate getting an atrocious dip whenever you're in 2v2 battles, or the fact that you still have to slog through most of the early game tutorials before things start getting good. Ultimately, the question of whether you should pick up Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon depends on how you felt about the original games, if you've already played them.
Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon encourage a visit to Alola to catch ‘em all once more, but your mileage will vary based on your past experience with the previous titles. If you’ve never played the original Sun or Moon games, then Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon is the definitive version of the series’ seventh generation and a must-have for your Pokemon gaming collection. If you played the heck out of Sun and Moon, however, then the new features might not be enough to warrant a return trip. Still, it’s a worthy swan song for the series on the 3DS.
If you missed out on the originals from last year, or if you're dying to revisit Alola, Pokémon Ultra Sun And Ultra Moon are must-haves.
The definitive edition of Pokémon Sun and Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon encapsulate the elements of what made the first set of games great—and also carry forward some of the games' flaws. Players may be retreading the same island paths as before, but a new selection of Pokémon, shiny new tokens to hunt, additional mini-games, and a brand new story add fun surprises for fans of the originals to find.
This is still a very high quality project with excellent graphics by the standards of Nintendo 3DS, beautiful cutscenes, interesting battles and excellent music. If you have not played the original Sun / Moon, then now is a good chance to catch up. But if you went through last year's version, then the re-release is unlikely to make you happier.

Having reached what amounts to the "end game" of modern Pokemon titles,it becomes clear that Ultra Moon is easily the better experience when compared to the original jaunt through Alola. Nothing becomes worse, and there are enough upgrades to side stories and the addition of some new Pokemon to the game that it is still well-worth playing, even for those who have completed Sun and Moon already.
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon surpassed my expectations. There were things overly familiar in more ways than one, but it's not fully covering old ground. Plenty of new features and details will make fans of the franchise very happy and while I still mourn for the DexNav to this day, the new content is well worth becoming Alolan Champion once more.
Though they aren't very different from their predecessors, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon make enough changes to stand apart as the definitive version of the seventh generation games.
If you skipped Sun and Moon last year, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are must-buys. Sci-fi storytelling, plenty of new content and adorable critters all included, but feels too soon a release to make the most of the innovation.
Pokemon Ultra Sun has plenty of content to offer to those who spent hours with Pokémon Sun & Moon. Though its main campaign isn't very different from what we played in his predecessor, Game Freak cut a lot of things to make it more direct. Also, this entry has a lot of postgame content for players that want to be the very best.

In the end, the caramel center of the Pokémon experience remains unchanged.
Once lost the surprise factor to present almost the same history and Island challenge that Sun & Moon, Ultrasun and Ultramoon, as the "definitive editions", are a good alternative for those who did not make the jump to the seventh generation, but lacks enough novelties to justify a new and last purchase for 3DS for those who did it.

If you already devoted a conspicuous amount of time on the previous game of the series, you'll have to be patient, and wait for the real fun to begin, since all the new (and good) stuff is carefully handed out bit by bit. Therefore, we recommend Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon only if you skipped the previous two titles. Or if you have a bone to pick with Necrozma!

Pokémon Ultra Sun does cover familiar ground, but the new changes and additions ensure a refreshing experience for both fans of the original and newcomers looking to be wowed by the sheer density of things to do in the Alola region.
Overall, from a gameplay perspective this version of Alola is vastly superior to its predecessor. The story is weaker due to how the changed the climax of the game, important character moments don’t happen and it’s a real shame. The story is still very good for a Pokemon title and I’m happy I got to experience it.
The Pokémon Company have officially announced that Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the last mainline Pokémon games coming to Nintendo 3DS, so it’s fitting that they feel so fleshed out. While they’re far less ground-breaking than Pokémon Sun and Moon, they provide the definitive way of exploring Alola. If you’re hesitant about double dipping, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon might just have enough new content to get you hooked all over again.
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon are very good third-version games. They expand the story alongside as well as the post-game, and barring some not-ideal motion controls and a slow intro, there's very little to complain about. It may be the same game as last year with a bunch of new stuff on top, but considering this is one of Pokémon's finest generations yet, I have zero problem with more of a good thing.
