The game is not without its problems. I, honestly, did not like the game at first. As a gamer used to fast-paced action titles with cars that can go 0-100 mph in under 5 seconds, this game was like a tortoise racing a hare.

I found Spintires: MudRunner to be an improvement over the original, but not enough to come fully recommended. The physics and simulation that goes into the game puts Euro Truck Simulator to shame. It does seem that Saber Interactive really went through the list of complaints, even adding a model of a driver to the barren cockpits of the prior game. But it seems no matter the improvements, the game is only as good as much as you enjoy the challenge and desire to make it to your destination – if the terrain lets you.

As a messy muck around, MudRunner has enough to offer to warrant a few hours of experimentation. Beyond that, for me, the limitations of its controls, camera, and missing mirrors put a cap on the off-road giggles.

There's no denying that Spintires is a different take on the transportation simulator game, but different isn't enough if the game in question doesn't keep consistency in its simming. A decent title to potter about in, especially with others, but whenever additional rules are implemented, Spintires is apt to suffer.

This game is one of frustration...in so many ways. The way your truck moves at a snail's pace along the seemingly neverending mucky paths, the way the external camera never sits quite right, the fact that the most enjoyable experiences in the game (the challenges) are such a small part. So while there is some enjoyment to be had and the physics engine and graphics are both notable, the core game ultimately feels more like work than fun.

Spintires: MudRunner is like heaven for fans of trucks and dirt. It's a pretty realistic simulation which could also hook players that are just interested in an occasional challenge.

For the lovers of heavy trucks, 4 wheel drives and Jeeps, and for the lovers of rough roads and difficult conditions, Spintires is the real deal. Spintires is a solid driving simulation like no other game before, and while its camera angels and controls might be annoying at first, the top-notch visuals and sharp gameplay eventually help it to become one of the best driving simulations available on the market.

It would be easy to dismiss Spintires: MudRunner as a niche title but in truth it's surprisingly accessible. It can drag sometimes and if you think patience is a dirty word, steer clear. But for the most part it's an engaging, messy time sink that's well worth getting stuck into.

Just like real off-road driving, Mudrunner can be frustrating and difficult, but for the most part it's fun, satisfying and gloriously messy.

The camera problems do threaten to take this off-road game into a ditch, but you'll likely come back and persevere with MudRunner far more generously and readily than you would expect. Providing a reason why driving at a glacial pace through the game's muddy tracks is so gloriously satisfying is as tricky as trying to explain why another episode of Ice Road Truckers always seems like a good idea. There's absolutely no doubt that it isn't perfect, and that more patient players will get more out of this than those with a shorter fuse, but it's impressive how such a relatively simple concept can provide so many hours of entertainment.

Spintires: Mudrunner is a hard-crusted simulation title that makes you earn your fun through hard work and determination. It's certainly not for everyone with a crawling pace and a muted aesthetic, but the impressive physics and sandbox design make for some great moments, especially if you're playing with others. The UI and vehicle handling will have you wrestling for control at times, but if you persevere, this is a game with surprisingly rewarding gameplay and plenty to get stuck into.

With its pedestrian pace and delivery objectives, Mudrunner won't appeal to an awful lot of people, but that doesn't stop it being a fun and often relaxing experience.

Spintires: MudRunner is utterly unique, and as a driving simulator of a niche field it is basically unparalleled. However, the difficulty level and lack of pace are likely going to make it a very niche game, while the camera is an extra challenge in itself. Still, there's grit, determination, freedom and reward to be found here for those ready to wade in.

Spintires: MudRuner is a breath of fresh air for the usual player of the sport driving genre. In addition, with its fantastic atmosphere, it will transport us to the purest nature. However, its high difficulty can make us lose interest and leave it aside.
