I’ll admit that I was already a big fan of the game after spending hours with it in my younger years, but I’m glad to report that Onimusha: Warlords Remastered still holds up well today. The combat is fun and surprisingly intricate, the world itself is fascinating to explore, whilst the visuals manage to hold up well despite being originally designed for the PlayStation 2 – it certainly won’t feel like you’re playing an eighteen-year old game. It has its flaws too though and some gamers might not tolerate the fixed camera angles or the amount of backtracking featured in the game, whilst there’s no denying it has moments that it can just generally feel a little bit clunky too. The pros of the game absolutely outweigh the cons though and with the low price-point of £15.99 you’d be a fool to miss out on Onimusha: Warlords Remastered. Not only is it a great way to experience a series that needs a SERIOUS revival, but it also just so happens to offer a thoroughly enjoyable demon-filled adventure in its own right too.
f you're up for a (little bit of) challenge and want to see what the fuss is all about or even want to revisit the game 18 years after you last played it, Onimusha: Warlords has a lot to offer if you can put up with its limitations.
For the relatively low asking price Onimusha Warlords is worth a look if you've ever been interested in the series or just want to slay demons in historical Japan. Just bewware you'll have to contend with some game design elements that belong in the early 2000s. It's not a terribly long game and you can get through it in a few hours, but it'll keep you entertained throughout.
Where most publishers are trying to squeeze as much as possible out of people, juicing those nostalgia glands for every penny, here we have a sensible price point for a decent older game that’s been blown up to look passable on a modern screen.
Carefully balancing atmospheric exploration, strategic combat and brain-teasing puzzles, Onimusha: Warlords never feels like a chore to play. It doesn’t stretch itself too thin, and I appreciate that now more than ever.
Whether this release is testing the water for a return to the series, or it's just a dip into the library to throw out a release in January, Onimusha is one of Capcom's finest and least appreciated. Hopefully with this new version, creaky as it can be at times, the game (and franchise) finds some new fans. It would be great to have Onimusha and Nioh competing side by side to have the premier Japanese dark fantasy crown.
With the only changes being an excellently redone soundtrack, this port is the perfect way to relive your memories of the Playstation 2 classic. However, if you've never played Onimusha, this port's only real value is as a simple way to experience a piece of history. Over the course of 18 years, other games have improved on everything that once made Onimusha great.
The current generation's release of the classic Onimusha: Warlords showcases how some features can truly stand the test of time.
A fun relic of the early PS2 days that I still like a lot, but slightly too dated for most players to enjoy.
Still thoroughly good fun, Onimusha: Warlords is nonetheless showing its age, and unfortunately doesn't really hold up in 2019. For a fan like me, revisiting Capcom's samurai survival horror is genuinely welcome, but anyone experiencing it for the first time might come away perplexed.
A great return that makes us want a new iteration on this franchise.

Onimusha: Warlords is a game from another era and the remaster, despite its many enhancements, sadly highlights how the experience hasn't aged too well. This doesn't mean that the game isn't good, as many of its ideas, such as combat, leveling system and puzzles, only required a few small tweaks to be truly excellent. The fact that it's a game from 2001 is clear when playing the game, but Onimusha: Warlords can still provide a sweet, albeit short, experience.
Capcom could have done more with Onimusha: Warlords, but they didn't screw it up (at least on PS4) and that's all they really needed to do. Given that I still play the original from time to time, I'd say I'm more than happy with a nip and a tuck here and there. Now we just need the full trilogy.
Onimusha brings back one of the greatest PS2 adventures. Visuals (remastered in 16:9 format and 1080p resolution) and combat system are still ok, but some mechanics feel outdated. It brought back our best memories of the 2001 original PS2 game.

Onimusha: Warlords must be experienced, whether you were a fan of the games’ before or have never tried them before. Especially with the portability of Switch, the game has never felt more at home. Whether this is the last we see of Onimusha from Capcom remains to be seen, but having dived back in after all these years away from feudal Japan, I realise that I’ve never wanted to revisit this franchise more.
While the second and third games are arguably better, Onimusha: Warlords serves as a perfect introduction to one of Capcom's most underrated franchises. So many minor improvements have been made here to make the game very playable by modern standards, though the fixed camera angles will remain polarising with modern audiences. Regardless, Onimusha: Warlords is a brief yet rewarding experience that combines simple yet satisfying combat and ghoulish enemy designs to create something that's still unique.
After 18 years, Onimusha: Warlods is still an awesome game to play. It isn't the best remastered ever, with just few adjustment and no real innovations.
