While the visuals are well-drawn and the series’ trademark gamer humor is alive and well, everything about the way Super Neptunia RPG moves and feels to play is a real drag.

The Gamindustri returns with a new kind of an adventure.

Super Neptunia RPG negates the positives that it brings about. The fresh perspective that comes from being a classic 2D RPG with a simple battle system clashes with the unintuitive and unresponsive platforming. The presentation is beautiful, but the performance is hampered when compared to its predecessors. The ability to explore also seems nice until you realize that the streamlined side-quest system has been replaced with the more time-consuming method of visiting each quest-giver individually. Fans of the series may still enjoy it.

I enjoyed the story, characters, and humor which Neptunia always does very well. I do feel like there is room for improvement however and would recommend that players new to the franchise start elsewhere.

With beautiful designs and a new style of gameplay Super Neptunia RPG tries something new but performance issues, combat that can often drag, and a story that is only held up by its humor and the player’s love of the characters limits its appeal to only the die-hard fans of the series or those looking for something a bit different from the genre norms.

Despite its wonderful art direction, Super Neptunia RPG is obsolete, anachronistic and poor in contents.

There's a bit of a love/hate relationship in play when reviewing a game like Super Neptunia RPG. Maybe a case of Stockholm Syndrome has crept in, but the time in this 2D world feels mostly well spent.

Super Neptunia RPG, like its predecessors, has cut back significantly on fan service, though there are still several instances that nod at the series’ origins.

Technically shoddy, this latest Neptunia game is a short and fairly limited JRPG. But from a narrative and artistic standpoint it's an enjoyable adventure.

For those who have previously enjoyed the tales of Neptune and her crew, it's possibly worth a try, but for those uninitiated, this won't create any new Nep Nep fans.

Super Neptunia RPG is a weird game that, even being pretty, doesn't use the strong points of the series in which it is based on. The story and gameplay don't do anything to stand out and the visuals alone aren't enough to carry this entire adventure.

Super Neptunia RPG makes an earnest attempt at shaking up the formula of the Neptunia series. Unfortunately, major technical issues bog this game down at every turn, and even if they were fixed, the drawn out story and over-simplified combat would fail to equate to an enjoyable game. Super fans of the Neptunia series might find something worthwhile in this experience, but it's sure to be buried under ten tons of headache and frustration.

Unresponsive and loaded with framerate issues, Super Neptunia RPG isn't for anyone other than hardcore Hyperdimension fans who desperately need something to play until the next mainline installment comes jiggling downline the assembly line.

Super Neptunia RPG feels like the junk food of its genre, something easy and inoffensive to eat, but offering no real substance and resulting in something like regret. It’s unfortunate to say, because it’s not terrible, just bland and dissatisfying enough to leave it sitting beneath more compelling and accessible titles in the Switch library.
