Deathloop delivers a tense and exciting story from start to finish. Layers upon layers of complex and polished narrative elements build a juggernaut of storytelling perfection. With all of this built on top of solid gun controls, simple yet effective stealth mechanics and some pretty wacky special powers you have a game that delivers everything it should in all areas.

As always Arkane Studios offers us a very original game with a lot of personality, but with some flaws that keep Deathloop away from excellence. Recommended especially if you are looking for a good experience of exploration and narrative.

While Deathloop is overall entertaining thanks to its own way to slowly unfold the narrative around Blackreef with well crafted level design. It is held back by its terrible AI, lack of weapon variety and boring stealth.

Deathloop's ending leaves plenty of questions and may not satisfy everyone, but there is plenty to love about the game and plenty more to see when another instalment graces our press conferences.

Deathloop is one of the titles that will remain as a reference point in the current generation, and if nothing else, it shows that the Arkane's engine is working at full speed and there really seems to be no limit for the creators.

Essential

Deathloop may not be Dishonored 3 or a Prey sequel, but one thing is certain: Arkane Lyon delivered yet another intellectual property worthy of keeping an eye on. The game simply astonishes with how its world-building, narrative, and gameplay all work together in masterful ways to deliver an incredibly unique experience. At face value, the game looks like any another Arkane title, and upon first boot, it may even feel like it is. After a little bit of further inspection and a whole lot of prodding, however, the surface-level worries are immediately blown out of the water. There is an ocean of gameplay possibilities, new and unique ways of Memento mori inspired storytelling, and world-building unlike any other. The game may not be the be-all-and-end-all, but it most certainly sets the bar for first-person action going forward. Simply superb.

Deathloop is a fun, vibrant shooter with an excellent art direction and a stunning soundtrack. For a game all about replayability though, this has a surprising lack of it once you’ve broken the loop.

Deathloop seems at times like an attempt by Arkane to make its distinctive formula more accessible, so that it can finally boost its mainstream appeal. But we are always talking about a title of the highest quality, with a concept and a structure that are masterfully executed, an excellent multiplayer and a multi-level and creative gameplay.

Overall, Deathloop is a satisfying game of cat and mouse. A great adventure in time and chaos letting you play the game how you want it. Whether you want to guns blazing or be quiet as a church mouse, Deathloop allows you all that. I recommend this game to casual and veteran players alike as it offers a lot to anyone who just wants to have an enjoyable and fun experience.

Another day, another loop, and with each new timeloop, Deathloop has me even more impressed. This Murder Puzzle on Blackreef is a highly engaging sandbox for experimental players, and a surprisingly complex detective game with its heart in the right place and the loop in every last detail of its DNA.

Deathloop just works on every level and will be a game I’ll revisit time and time again. It may be one of the final Bethesda games PlayStation owners will be able to get their hands on, but it’s undoubtedly one of the very best they’ve ever published. To no one’s surprise whatsoever, Arkane have smashed it once again!

Arkane, a studio known for designing extremely engaging and clever games, has elevated its art with Deathloop. Games like this are lightning strike moments, a combination of talent and ambition that is both rare and risky.

To conclude then. Deathloop is a great concept that knows its own boundaries and sticks to it with a sensible aplomb. Colt is a lovable rogue, against a backdrop of some accomplished gameplay Arkane have honed from their other games. There is not much to dislike about this game aside from a few niggles such as no in-level checkpoints for those crashing to desktop moments. Odd AI behaviour that doesn’t feel out-of-place, but comes across somewhat sloppy. However, niggles become outweighed greatly by an awesome soundtrack and voice acting, alongside great visuals making this a must-play title as we near the end of 2021. Hopefully, Bethesda/Arkane look to develop the IP further.

Deathloop is a highlight of 2021 releases and a great time loop adventure with solid combat abilities, a gripping story with fun characters, and smart systems that bypass some of the restrictions of its narrative form. There are some issues with the game in regards to the ending, enemies, and how hand-holding the game can be, but I think the game’s competent blend of inspirations can make some of those points easy to forget.

For a game that claims not to be a roguelike, it sure does have a lot of those elements to it. It’s also impossible to not draw comparisons to other games made by Arkane such as Dishonored and Prey. But, Deathloop shifts its way to us and feels very fresh. Whatever you learn in the aforementioned games, just forget about it. The player doesn’t feel forced into playing stealthily or guns blazing. It’s entirely the player’s choice. Coupling the Infusion system with the time loop mechanics is a stroke of genius. For such a small world, the sandbox-style gameplay offers a lot to discover and will keep you intrigued throughout. Deathloop is fun and frivolous and the combat whether you’re going sneaky-sneaky or just want to blow some heads off is a blast. I award Deathloop the Thumb Culture Platinum Award.

Deathloop is an incredibly unique FPS, blending together some of the best aspects of Arkane’s previous work. Whether you prefer to sneak and target your prey slowly, or to tackle the challenge head-on with a limitless arsenal of weapons and powers. Deathloop blends an intriguing narrative, with incredibly diverse combat, and truly makes it one of the best games on PlayStation 5 right now. It is without a doubt one of the best games by Arkane to date.
