Shin Megami Tensei V is an excellent addition to the Atlus RPG series. Despite a few occasional issues, it's a richly detailed experience that's worth playing. Even with so many years of built-in expectations, the result is quite positive and one of the best titles of its kind on Switch.

One of the best JRPGs on the market, with an Atlus that has managed to balance the expectations of new and old players in a very demanding but fair game, fresh and ironically somewhat continuist, with a balance that can please all fans of the genre.

Shin Megami Tensei V is a solid experience of what the series can present to the player. Never taking any chances with the formula, it introduces an interesting world, but one that tends to compare too much with other releases in the same series. Some better design choices could have been considered, mainly to avoid midgame repeatability, which tended to sharply accentuate during our time with this title. For fans of the genre, it is certainly an option to consider, but do not foresee a significant evolution or a reformulation of its dynamics, as it may lead to serious disappointment.

I enjoyed and continue to enjoy my time with Shin Megami Tensei V, but it isn't the title I envisioned when it was announced a few years back. It's a top-shelf JRPG with a lot of content, charm, and game time to keep the most engrossed of players demon negotiating until the wee hours. For me sadly the game lacks the identity I've come to expect from the main Shin Megami Tensei series. That alongside some performance issues, the weighty day one DLC, and the draining pace issues means this is one title that has strayed further from God than I would have liked.

It's an enticing turn-based RPG with a fascinating premise, tactical combat, tons of content, challenging gameplay, and an addictive demon fusion framework that alone will occupy hours of your time.

Shin Megami Tensei V is an RPG that's nothing short of indispensable in the Nintendo Switch catalogue. The follow up to the series' fourth title may not bring its peak when it comes to plot, but Shin Megami Tensei V's exquisite combat mechanics - which build on what was good before and add improvements - as well as a fantastic soundtrack and marvelous open world areas make this an instant classic.

Shin Megami Tensei V truly outshines any previous main or spin-off title in the franchise. Persona 5 may have been an incredible feat, but this game simply sets a new standard. Part of the game’s allure comes from a surreal horror aspect no other franchised game has managed to successfully capture, but Shin Megami Tensei V is truly so much more. It is a classic Japanese-roleplaying game at its finest, thanks to the involved and nuanced plot, well-written characters, and unmovable resilience in terms of how it just does not fix what is not broken. It is a collection of all the best aspects of what makes a good Shin Megami game, and just like Nocturne before it, will go down as an exceptional game to beat.

Shin Megami Tensei V is, without a doubt, my favorite game of the mainline series. I love the demon interactions and the fun combat system, and the world they created to explore is simply amazing. I played the game on Normal difficulty, but there are easier and more challenging ones that players can choose from to fit their skill level. There is more than enough content here to justify the $59.99 price tag. This is a great entry for newcomers and old fans alike and no one should sleep on it.

In a year full of good JRPGs, Shin Megami Tensei V shined as one of the best if not the best JRPGs of the year, Atlus, in their most ambitious endeavor were brilliant, and were only held back by the limited hardware they developed on.

The story is quite compressed, and the performance does not fully utilize Nintendo's switch performance. However, the attractive and difficult battle perfectly reflects the sadistic nature of "Shin Megami Tensei."

The game’s all-encompassing tension, infrequent story beats, and exciting systems all add up to an experience that effectively satisfies the challenging RPG niche that Shin Megami Tensei first carved out in the late 90s.

Shin Megami Tensei 5 differs precisely in the way the strategic combat system shines and how the overall experience is set to never trivialize it.

Shin Megami Tensei V absolutely does its job well: it brings a great combat system and an equally good explorable world to Nintendo's hybrid console. It does so with a lot of forethought for the player, rewarding them for good use of what they're given at their disposal but without avoiding being punitive if bad mistakes are made.

It won’t be to everyone’s tastes and combat’s trial-and-error nature might prove off-putting to some, but if you can look past that, you’ll find a highly engaging RPG worth exploring. As such, it comes strongly recommended.

Shin Megami Tensei V’s advancements in combat and demon fusion make for an incredible RPG with some minor problems that do little to tarnish the full experience.

To celebrate its first simultaneous worldwide release, Shin Megami Tensei V smoothes out its edges and strips away the hermetic solemnity that distinguishes its predecessors. In doing so it loses part of its charm, mainly related to the depth of plot and characters and to the characterization of the world, but at the same time it tries to fascinate a wider audience with an extremely more digestible story able to respect the dogmas established by the brand over the years. Enjoyable both in portability and on the TV screen despite the obvious limitations of the hardware, it's an extremely good product, able to keep you busy for over a hundred hours without ever feeling the weight: Shin Megami Tensei V is a unique item in the Nintendo Switch library, a must-have for all fans of the genre - even for those who own other gaming platforms.

While I can say that I enjoyed my time with Shin Megami Tensei V, it was the exploration of ruined Tokyo that kept my attention. Once the last big map was filled in, the last treasures claimed, and the last little red dude returned to the item shop’s master, the game quickly lost its luster.
