Above all, though, Kaiju Wars has a wonderful feel for the cadence of a monster movie. It's always building towards those third-act reversals when your literally downtrodden cast of 16-bit expendables finally manages to break the creature's stride, your tanks ramming its ankles so that your experimental laser can rumble into firing range, in what feels exactly like the fruition of a desperate plan concocted in the back of a racing Humvee. What occasionally looks like a thin parody is, in fact, a labour of earnest affection for a species of story that, as with zombie movies, most nerds understand at the level of muscle memory. Forget sinister illuminati-style organisations - the kaijus' most fanatical adherents are surely the developers themselves.

All in all, Kaiju Wars is not a revolutionary experience, but it sure is a good time. I recommend it to fans of challenging SRPGs, retro gaming, and the kaiju genre alike. Plus, it includes several public domain giant monster movies, including multiple Gamera films, the 1925 film The Lost World, and the North Korean monster film Pulgasari. If you’re interested in old-school monster movies, that alone might be worth the price of admission.

If you're a fan of tight strategy games that don't take themselves too seriously, Kaiju Wars is a short but well-balanced title that sees you defending your homeland from giant monsters. The retro graphics and sound allow the developers to lean into the campest kaiju film tropes, but the gameplay itself shouldn't be overlooked because of the silly packaging. Even without the additional features that the PC version eventually got, there is plenty here to sink your teeth into across the short playtime.

An excellent game for strategy fans who love Godzilla movies. Even without that, the game has so much care and attention put into that it's hard to put it down.

Kaiju Wars is a great game for anyone who loves classic monster movies, old school games, and strategy titles that have you using your brains trying to protect the city, not destroy it.

Kaiju Wars is the sort of video game that understands that huge monsters make for incredible threats, which in turn allows players to derive a lot of satisfaction from stopping them in their tracks. The game has the narrative, the mechanics, the scenario design, and the presentation to keep gamers always engaged, guessing how they can pick up an extra medal or tackle a mission on Hard.

“Kaiju Wars” is a rare beast: a game that manages to be both a loving tribute to its source material and a solid entry in the strategy genre. Its innovative gameplay mechanics, combined with a unique aesthetic and deep strategic possibilities, make it a real treat for fans of the genre. In the grand tradition of monster movies, it’s a game that’s not afraid to wear its heart on its sleeve, even as it destroys the city around it.

Kaiju Wars is an indie without too many pretensions, with captivating pixel art graphics that recall the old cabinets. Intuitive, yet challenging gameplay that will put a strain on the player's strategic skills. Ideal for lovers of the genre and kaiju, but which lacks entry barriers for newbies.

Kaiju Wars is one big love letter to the kaiju genre as it knows what defined it and what makes it so iconic. At the same time, it attempts to broaden the player’s horizon by encouraging them to look beyond Godzilla and works like Evangelion.

Kaiju Wars is a fun but all too brief tactical experience. While each individual campaign battle is engaging, with only six acts Kaiju Wars doesn’t have enough content on its own. Players will need to rely on building their own maps and finding others produced by the Steam community.

Kaiju Wars is clearly a labor of love from people who love Kaiju, and with it, they manage to take a neat concept and turn it into something great. In most games, it’s you laying slaughter to hundreds of nameless grunts and fodder. In Kaiju Wars, you’re the fodder, and the beauty of it is in the challenge that presents.

Kaiju Wars is a very fun spin on the turn-based strategy genre that brings a lot of style along with it. Its gameplay stands up to its striking visuals, and the few weaker points of its design do very little to detract from the overall experience.
