For what it's worth, I enjoyed all the time I've been spending with Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising. On the surface, the gameplay really is quite simple and although it never really provided a real challenge, the game's simplicity worked in its favor. While it may have plenty of little hiccups, it is a fun sidescrolling RPG with a strong focus on town building. However, if you expect much more than that out of it, you might find yourself disappointed. Should you be a Gamepass subscriber, I highly recommend giving it a try.

Pretty visuals can only get you far, however, and Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising doesn’t offer enough entertaining or unique content to keep it from being anything more than a passable RPG. At the very least, it introduces the Eiyuden world and some characters involved in Hundred Heroes, but that’s very little incentive for putting up with tedious gameplay and boilerplate characters.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is an action RPG that makes a good introduction to the Eiyuden universe. It's a vivid world that, at least in this prologue, is worth getting to know, despite the artificial handling of the narrative and gameplay progression being a point that devalues the game a little.

While Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising doesn’t have the stamp of undeniable greatness, it does have truly amazing visuals. The writing/translation, music, and most of combat is rather good too. Town-building feels meaningful as it rewards you with significant growth in combat abilities. Despite a slow, unimpressive start and getting lost in dungeons, Rising builds into an enjoyable action RPG. It’s an easy game, suitable for casual or younger players. It’s also very linear and repetitive, but some players may find such simplicity relaxing. If Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes can boast similar strengths, I’d be curious to play the longer game when it releases in 2023. Hundred Heroes isn’t planned or confirmed for the Switch yet, but if we’re lucky, I will plead for a larger font than what Rising uses. (On the Switch Lite, text can be painfully small.) Oh, and fewer fetch quests, please! Now 14 hours into the game, I’m guessing the end is only a few hours away. Instead of rushing, I’ve decided to play in short sessions at leisurely pace. That might be the best way to enjoy Rising.

Otherwise, on an overall, Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising keeps things fairly simple for the shorter adventure and while it may not be for everyone, I enjoyed my first glimpse of this new world. With more side quest stories than a main line story, the story of this town was an enjoyable one and I look forward to the main event of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes once it releases.

A compact fantasy story, with simple gameplay, a lot of backtracking, a gameplay cycle that engages, endearing characters and a fantastic art that combines 2.5D with grace. It is not a title that seeks to be ambitious, but it is enjoyable, and that is why it is comforting.

While the game is adequate in nearly everything it does, Rising feels much more like a chore simulator and ultimately is just as engaging as doing them in real life.

‎Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is an old-school JRPG that adapts some modern detail, combines it with very good gameplay (once the story is advanced) and serves as a prequel to Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes next year. Developed by Yoshitaka Murayama (Suikoden) is a game that is made entertaining by a great general elaboration, by its spectacularity and the great personality of many characters, but adds too much filler and sidequests perhaps very absurd and unnecessary, which discredit it instead of doing it well.‎

A short game that doesn't outstay its welcome, Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising was an enjoyable, if slightly repetitive, experience that serves as an ample teaser for something bigger.

The weird thing is, though, that somehow it all ends up working.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising has made a substantial effort to use a rich narrative with charming characters to create a genuinely wholesome world. However, the side quests serve as a barrier, as they entail the monotonous affair of gathering materials. Hopefully, Hundred Heroes will not fall prey to the same shortcomings as this introduction chapter.

It's hard to say that Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising isn't worth the small asking price of £12.99 when it feels more like an indie Metroidvania than a taster of what's to come in Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising - at least from a world-building aspect. On the other hand, I just didn't find too much of the game enjoyable. It mostly boils down to inane tasks held together with weak combat and shallow exploration, along with very light city-building aspects. Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising manages to land firmly as a middle-of-the-road title for me. While not a horrible game by any standard, it just did nothing to convert me to its cause. Unless you're extremely hyped for the main event, it might be worth picking up on a sale out of curiosity at best.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising demonstrates how beautiful Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will be and it gives us a small insight into that game's characters and the world, but it is done in a game that feels padded out to extend what would otherwise be a short adventure.

Hundred Heroes is still a year away and while you wait for it you can play action-packed Rising and learn all about its world and the characters.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is rather unexpected in the sense that it's a prequel of a game that hasn't been released yet, but that doesn't prevent it from having a great plot and outstanding characters. It does take its time to gather pace, however, which requires some patience until the game shows all its value, but the most committed players will be duly rewarded with Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising until the next game arrives.

As a prequel to the upcoming Eiyuden Chronicle – Hundred Heroes, Rising does a really good job at introducing players to the universe. Its simple, tight combat mechanics and smart level design elevate it from other side-scrolling action-adventure games.

Impatient fans can make do with Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising, a prequel game set in the same universe as Hundred Heroes that is meant to kick off this new franchise. While not exactly the next great innovation in action RPGs, Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is a serviceable offering.
