Gotham Knights has the potential to be fantastic, but a rushed-out release means that both small and big problems are constantly gnawing at the gaming experience. Behind the slightly too many misses, however, is a sometimes brilliant adventure that in several ways beats the classic Arkham trilogy. Now we just hope that in the reasonably near future the game will receive updates that grind away the parts that chafe.

While fun at first, the simplistic, bland combat and boring navigation makes the game less than it could have been.

If the Arkham games are Christopher Nolan levels of invention and genius then Gotham Knights is hanging out down in the DC Extended Universe with Zak Snyder and Aquaman. Set your expectations accordingly and there’s enjoyable entertainment to be had.

It's been many years in the making, but can Gotham Knights meet expectations? Not really.

Simultaneously better and worse than you'd expect, with some fun co-op and detective elements but weak combat and muddled storytelling.

While I can strongly recommend Gotham Knights to any Batman fan out there, I will say that you should temper expectations a bit, especially if you’re going into this thinking it’ll be anything like the Arkham series. There’s a lot to enjoy about it, such as the combat, and the story that helps keeps you going, but outside of that, there is just too much left to be desired. The open-world isn’t particularly special in anyway, mostly serving as a way to pad hours with boring side activities that are forced to progress. Not the most interesting of gameplay loops that gets tiring well before the midpoint. Then there’s the stealth that just doesn’t build upon the working formula of the Arkham franchise, if not regresses it. It’s worth a play for sure, but nothing I would say that anyone needs to rush out and experience.

Basically, Gotham Knights got pushed out of the belfry when it was only barely, kinda, sorta ready to fly.

Gotham Knights can prove to be a great game in certain aspects but it struggles to find its own identity. It’s lost and doesn’t really know what it wants to be, but regardless of its identity crisis, Gotham Knight’s characters, co-op, and enjoyable combat made my time memorable and bearable.

Most people ought to skip Gotham Knights, and save themselves the trouble of playing a clunky, repetitive game with elements that they've seen countless times before. However, anyone that truly loves the sidekicks of the Batman franchise will be utterly overjoyed and willing to look past the lack of polish and enjoy a janky game that has a lot of intricate details and care put into it.

Gotham Knights tries hard to escape Batman's shadow and still delivers a compelling full-length brawler, but feels assembled by basic action-adventure with pieces that feel all too dated.

The experience of playing Gotham Knights is dull. mediocre plot, hollow open world, equipment system in a mess, the fun of multiplayer mode is also limited. Although this game did not give me any strong negative feedback during playing, I still do not recommend players to buy it. After all, you can have many better choices at the end of this year.

If you’re a fan of open world superhero games or a fan of the Batman franchise there are certainly a number of individual aspects of Gotham Knights you’ll be able to enjoy. The combat feels nice, the world is there to explore and there are some great character moments and writing throughout the whole game. Unfortunately it falls short as an overall great package due to an RPG loot system that feels like it was forced in and largely unnecessary, and pacing issues with the mission design and boss encounters. When the game focuses on the world and story it’s great, I just wish the game overall was closer to what we got with Arkham Origins rather than the push towards bloated modern grinds that have been injected into far too many games these days.

Gotham Knights is a decent game, but because it follows what has become the premiere superhero series in video games, it doesn’t quite scratch the itch that the end of the Arkham series left.

If we accept that we are not facing a new Batman from Rocksteady, but something totally new, it is easy to have fun and enjoy this remarkable proposal of the Dark Knight's universe.
