As you sprint through hallways of visceral blood while being pursued by beings of pure terror, The Outlast: Trials provides a unique experience only Red Barrels is capable of delivering.

The Outlast Trials takes its bone-chilling horror and extends it to a multiplayer aspect. The series retains its horror roots that scare you at every turn. Completing missions also makes you feel like you are improving, giving you goals to work towards. However, part of the fear is dampened when you realize that failure isn’t as painful as it used to be. Missions also take a long time, subtly encouraging you to play with friends.

The Outlast Trials is a fun coop game with friends (you can play alone as well). But there doesn't seem to be much in the way of content. The main maps are great with having the players do various objectives, but I found the MK Challenges tedious and lame.

It's one of the most extreme and hardcore multiplayer experiences we've ever had, but at the same time catching its madness and overcoming its challenges is very, very satisfying. It's not for the faint of heart, of course.

The Outlast Trials is not the Outlast 3 that many fans of the saga not only expect but crave very strongly, but this does not mean that it is not a game to miss, especially for those who have played the first two titles. As it is a prequel, the newcomers will not feel excluded from the story either, so at the hooking level, everything closes.

While the strictly defined horror gameplay might not keep one hooked for hours-long sessions, The Outlast Trials’ style and atmosphere is worth several return journeys. It makes very few changes to the series’ usual stealthy scariness, yet the inclusion of three other players makes for a breezy version that’s pretty damn entertaining. Be aware that playing it alone makes everything take four times longer and isn’t particularly fun, but with even just one more player, some torture porny fun can be had.

Outlast Trials may not be for everyone, but I feel confident in saying that those that do love it, will really love it, and considering Red Barrels approach to listening to player feedback throughout it’s early access, it’s sure to be a worthwhile investment.

The Outlast Trials is a fun multiplayer fright-fest that’ll keep players on the edge of their seat, but it doesn’t always play to the strengths of the Outlast series. Don’t get me wrong, it still offers a bloody scary good time, but the more predictable gameplay loop and iffy enemy AI can make the experience feel a bit tame when compared to the horrific thrills seen in the mainline titles. But hey, with six trials to play through, plenty of challenges to conquer, and a whole host of gruesome tasks to complete, there’s plenty here to keep fans invested in The Outlast Trials’ multiplayer scares.

The Outlast Trials can give you several hours of entertainment with your friends, while played alone it is far too unbalanced and frustrating. Unfortunately, after several hours the repetitiveness of the missions starts to become noticeable, and even in co-op it starts to become a bit tiresome.

The Outlast Trials is a unique cooperative horror game with a lot of potential, but it's one of those early access games that's unpolished and lacking content.

The Outlast Trials is a bloody cooperative horror game that burns brightly, but fizzles after a few enjoyable hours.

A good multiplayer experience, which still needs some refinement and which goes a little too far in penalizing solo players.

The Outlast Trials is possibly the most deranged the series has ever been, with plenty of smart ideas albeit quite sparse on content.

The Outlast Trials is a fun, but flawed addition to the Outlast series, trading in the original titles’ claustrophobic horror for in-your-face multiplayer mayhem. The title’s core gameplay loop offers a thrilling challenge and high replayability, delivering plenty of trials for fans to sink their teeth into across its Core, Advanced, and Ultra Programs, with immersive audio-visual elements that deliver on all fronts. Unfortunately, The Outlast Trials' balancing issues, unjustified gratuity, and complete lack of scares may leave some players disappointed. Fans of the Outlast series will likely find plenty of reasons to explore and overcome the Murkoff Corporation’s various testing facilities, as the title offers enough challenge to keep them engaged. However, for general horror audiences, and those new to Outlast, The Outlast Trials may struggle to live up to the legendary reputation of the series’ original entries.

The Outlast Trials delivers a scary uncertainty with immersive gameplay that harkens back to the first Outlast game. This is a fun title that has a good amount of difficulty to it, where you can play it solo and still have fun even though this is mainly a co-oping experience.

It may not be the next single player terror fans of its predecessors are looking for, but The Outlast Trials successfully translates the series' formula for a co-op setting. Hiding from gory psychopaths and utilising night vision is still the name of the game - now you simply do it alongside up to three friends online. Though silly enemy AI and some repetitive visual assets drag the experience down, The Outlast Trials is an example of a former single player game turned online title done right.

The Outlast Trials isn't a bad game, thanks to a dose of blood and violence. The emphasis is placed on the multiplayer experience, who undermines the enjoyment for players accustomed to solo playthroughs.

Outlast Trials tries to mix its traditional gameplay with online elements, and the result is neither revolutionary nor entertaining, making it more of a spin-off to the original series rather than a cornerstone for future releases.
