Kaku: Ancient Seal is sub-par in every aspect of the action-adventure genre. Stay clear.

KAKU: Ancient Seal offers a great experience in a fantastic world, but certain design choices leave something to be desired.

KAKU: Ancient Seal is a decent representative of the third-person action genre that doesn’t find ways to innovate in interesting ways. The core mechanics are decent, and the world is at times impressive. There’s plenty of depth to combat. But the narrative stalls after a few hours and fighting will become repetitive despite the wealth of new moves players can learn.

It's a delightful, fairy-tale title that can captivate with its locations and wipe the floor with the player during boss fights. I can even forgive how often I died during the platforming sections because I felt satisfaction when I finally managed to complete them. Do I recommend playing it? Yes. In its current version, it's a good title, and with further updates, it might get even better.

Kaku: Ancient Seal is - albeit with the many limitations due to budget constraints - a good representative of the third-person action-adventure genre. The basic mechanics are engaging enough, and the game world, thanks to the variety of biomes, offers an impressive overview. Unfortunately, the narrative is not as deep as it should be and the combat system, although there is a wealth of new moves that players can learn above average, is not balanced very well, which makes combat too mundane and simplified. Fans of the genre will certainly appreciate the four continents and the unique content associated with each. But the whole experience would certainly have benefited if the developer had focused more on the content than on the game map (which is too large and bare of elements).

Kaku: Ancient Seal is often great, but a collective of small issues and bland systems do hold it back. Combat is serviceable in that you have a few options that work well, but you’ll largely find yourself just spamming the best options. The story lacks agency for Kaku himself, making him more of a bystander than an active participant. The localization is being addressed, but as of right now, it certainly has several problems.

Everything it proposes is carried out with great ease and taking into account that it is the first title of this studio and that it is a game that we could classify as "indie" it is very surprising that the result is so good.

Despite its obvious shortcomings, it’s a fun time that would best be played by someone who jumps on for a few hours a week so that the game’s simplicity can remain charming rather than repetitive. I certainly can’t fault the developer’s ambition – there’s a lot of stuff packed into Kaku: The Ancient Seal, including some very cool ideas. I just think if the developers had taken a few things out and focused on a couple of their key ideas, Kaku could have been even better. Taken for what it is though, Kaku: The Ancient Seal is a charming ARPG with a strong Zelda vibe and a lot of heart.

KAKU: Ancient Seal is a tale of courage, discovery, and the enduring spirit of a young hero and his loyal companion. It is a journey through a world steeped in mystery and magic, where the stakes are nothing less than the restoration of a world torn apart by ancient forces. As Kaku inches closer to the truth, he realizes that his quest is not just about reuniting elemental souls but about understanding his place in a world that is both ancient and ever-changing.

Kaku Ancient Seal feels nostalgic for PS2 area adventure games featuring fantastic world-building and strong action-adventure mechanics. The game will take you in, invest you in its diverse and interesting world, and provide satisfying ways to grow your strength as you balance the elements and save the world from destruction.

The ambitious action platform of the Chinese studio Bingobell leaves early access, expanding and polishing a generic and aimless game, condemned to live behind its references.

But colour me impressed. When I think indie, I rarely think “open-world”, but BINGOBELL showed me that’s it’s possible to craft a great and ambitious adventure game without a large body count. KAKU: Ancient Seals is one of the best open-world indie games I’ve ever played and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for their fill of lush environments and challenging dungeoneering.
