Dead Island 2 surely went through a few levels of development hell, so anyone following its path would reasonably suspect that the game might have issues. I can't say that it does anything exceptionally well, but it has enough life in it to avoid major stumbles. For better or worse, it is a by-the-numbers zombie basher that doesn't do anything terribly distinct. Its humor makes it compelling and fun, and it's at its best whenever it relies on that strength.

Dead Island 2 is a fun zombie game, there is nothing here that has not been done before, and it gets repetitive over time, but when considering its long and troubled development cycle, we are more than satisfied with the end product.

Dead Island 2 is not a bad game, nor is it the Holy Grail of zombie-themed action games. It is a fun game but it makes evident its lack of creativity and the limitations that were surely a necessity to get the project out of the hell it was in.

Dead Island 2 overcame years of development problems to deliver a fun zombie story with some personality. It doesn't try to go much beyond the basics, but it does it honestly and competently, with good hints of humor and a great co-op experience.

A fun but not relaxing trip to the fancy parts of L.A, Dead Island 2 is a major improvement over the previous franchise entries, with accurate goriness for the player's situation.

Dead Island 2 departs from the original setting of an island and takes place in a zombie-infested Los Angeles. The game now offers a semi-open world, featuring satisfying combat mechanics, a vast array of upgradable weapons, and intense battles against hordes of zombies.

Moments of brilliance marred too often by frustrating and/or boring gameplay. Only recommended in co-op and then barely.

Despite the significant improvements in mechanics and aesthetics, it is clear that Deep Silver stuck to the same formula. The same dark comedy with a not-so-serious plot can now be boring for veterans, but it can provide hours of fun to those new to the series. However, ten years is too lengthy for game development, and the same approach may be stale for others now, given that nothing much has improved with some elements in the game.

Dead Island 2 is far better than it ever had any right to be. The story is bare bones, however, it does make up for it with the huge variety of zombies and the FLESH system revolutionises the way you can make calculated and decisive kills. The game runs like a dream on the Playstation 5 with no bugs or crashes during my 30-hour playthrough. This is a solid instalment in the series that proves the wait was worth it.

Dead Island 2 is a pleasant surprise, but unfortunately it doesn't offer anything new. I’d go so far as to say it’s just a better version of its predecessor. It’s a bit more fun, more brutal, more polished, and definitely works better in co-op mode. Still, after nine years of development, I would have expected something more. The combat system is flawless, and destroying the undead is the best part.

Dead Island 2 is a modern title with old mechanics that still manages, especially in co-op, to offer a loud and fun experience that is not excellent but fun in the right doses.

Dead Island 2 doesn’t just let you survive the apocalypse—it invites you to laugh, cringe, and smash your way through it with a blood-soaked grin.

It’s not a perfect game. It’s not for everyone, either. But if you’ve got a hankering for some zombie horror, there are very few games out right now that will do the trick with the same level of visceral thrills as this one.

Dead Island 2 is an extremely fun game that doesn’t mess with the dumb gameplay of bashing around zombies. However, not every game is perfect. Between the rushed ending and the audio problems, it feels like they wanted to ship this game out ASAP. It’s always a little worrying when a game is set to come out of Development Hell, the vast majority of the time it’s either a glitchy piece of garbage or just boring. Dead Island 2 is definitely far better than most other games that have been through Development Hell, but I wish they had taken a little extra time to polish it up before shipping it out.

Dead Island 2 is a surprisingly good game that I had more fun with than I would have expected. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but its well-made mechanics, its simplicity and its honest intentions are enough elements to score it positively.

Dead Island 2's engaging combat, the sheer number of customization options, and its laid-back satirical world-building make it a worthy sequel. There are a few gameplay and quality-of-life issues that make this a somewhat frustrating experience though nothing major that would rob the overall fun factor of this game.

Dead Island 2 offers a zombie-themed adventure that is entertaining both in terms of atmosphere and gameplay. There is also an unexpected attention to detail in terms of graphics. However, the plot fails to be anywhere near as original as the characterisation of its characters.

Dead Island 2 is the most disgusting and wonderful thing I've ever seen, and it's also the most stable running game on PC in recent memory.

Dead Island 2 is a straight-up Hollywood ride. We are supported by a "flash" system that creates a symphony of destruction with every strike. The reactive environment highlights this symphony we can use for our destruction. This is primarily thanks to the reactions of electricity and fire. Unfortunately, there are scripted gameplay and procedures behind the RPG elements and the open world. However, these adverse facts did not prevent us from enjoying the game.

It’s incredible that Dead Island 2 made it through it’s development issues and is a game we can finally play in 2023. It offers a really fun sandbox to explore and tear zombies limb from limb but don’t expect a groundbreaking story or dialogue. If you’re looking for a fun first person zombie slaying experience then Dead Island 2 is going to be right up your alley. Let’s just hope it’s not another 10 years before we get to see more from this series, as I can’t wait to see how it’s awesome FLESH system evolves going forward.
