Flintlock’s “Souls-lite” approach isn’t without flaws, but ultimately works.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is an entertaining souls-lite game where exploring the world is well worth the effort. The story is fairly straightforward but provides enough to keep you engaged until the end. The NPC side quests are rewarding but don’t offer much insight into their characters. I had to get used to the controls, but after a short while, I fell into the rhythm of the game. The combat is challenging yet manageable, and the use of your flintlock is a great addition that really helps in defeating enemies. Enki is also a valuable aid during the adventure with his double jump, air dash, and attacks in combat. I was initially a bit skeptical, but I ended up enjoying Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn quite a lot and am eager to further explore The Lands of Kain. It might not be as well-developed as its bigger brothers, but I wouldn’t call it a poor imitation by any means.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is an ambitious blend of gunpowder and mythical elements set in a world where gods and undead armies threaten humanity. While the game introduces intriguing concepts and features a well-designed companion in Enki, it ultimately falls short due to disjointed combat mechanics, inconsistent dialogue, and frustrating level design.

There are some great moments in Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, but overall, it's just an average ARPG game. It crawls to a halt at the beginning, while the plot and character development fall well short of expectations. I wouldn't call it an exceptional game or anything that really leaps out. It took me just over twenty hours to finish the game on normal while grinding a bit for reputation and resources to upgrade.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is an enjoyable experience, but may struggle to stick in the memory. There are some interesting ideas at play, but the execution just always leaves a little bit to be desired.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is a fun and well-put together action-RPG, with a trope filled story. It isn't going to blow anyone's socks off, but this small adventure has just enough going for it and a short enough runtime that makes it worth diving into, especially for people that love focused and methodical combat.

We had hoped for a little more from "Flintlock: Siege of Dawn". The result is not a complete disaster, but it is lost in the middle of the big action-adventure and Soulslike productions. The witty fights and the brisk movement options speak for "Flintlock". Thanks to the variable difficulty level, you can quickly find your way into the game and have fun in combination with the well-implemented controls. However, "Flintlock" also runs out of steam just as quickly: The character system has too little effect on the progression. The story lacks interesting twists, characters and big moments. "Flintlock" is suitable as a beginner's Soulslike, but in the long run "Dark Souls" or "God of War" will not be able to offer spoiled core gamers.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is an incredibly unique title, with a remarkably interesting world and great twists on classic gameplay to keep you captivated as you gun down (or chop apart) the undead horde.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn offers us a solid and satisfying experience, aimed primarily at anyone who wants to approach the souls genre for the first time. The pleasant combat system, rewarding exploration, and a longevity of between 20 and 30 hours confirm the prowess of the A44 team; it's not a perfect game, but it exudes heart and passion, something not always a given.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn ends up getting lost in its concepts. The more agile vertical movement and combat alternatives are a positive point, but the lack of a more robust upgrade system and, mainly, bosses that reward the player make the game a confusing mix of ideas.

Setting an invasion of the undead, led by a ruthless pantheon, in an American Civil War context could be a good enough reason on its own to give Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn a chance. But if you add to this a gameplay that, although clearly inspired by its more famous counterparts, manages to present a handful of truly interesting ideas, then there are no real reasons not to try A44 Games' production at least once.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is a lot of fun if you engage with all of it.  At first, I was flying through the main quest before I slowed down and explored every inch of each map.  Once I made that change I went from enjoying my time to loving it.  It’s not the tightest game out there, but it has a lot of great ideas that come together for a package well worth experience.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is a more "layered" experience with a clear beginning, middle and end, no endgame and very limited grind. And ultimately, for that very reason - despite its missteps - it achieves what it sets out to do.
