Age of Mythology: Retold Reviews
Age of Mythology: Retold brings the beloved original RTS back with a whole new look and feel, and so far, it has delivered everything fans could want.
Old school strategy, sensibly modernised. Creaky cutscenes and character art aside, the visual overhaul works wonders.
Age of Mythology: Retold is a far better update to the classic than Extended Edition ever was, and this is self-evident through even a few hours with it. The effort put into making this the best Age of Mythology that has ever been oozes throughout, and it’s a resounding success. This remake easily becomes the platonic ideal for Age of Mythology and makes it the true successor to the original.
Age of Mythology: Retold eliminates the need to play the original titles as it takes everything from both of those games, modernizes it and brings the experience to 2024. While it lacks the polish of Age of Empires IV, the game remains extremely fun thanks to the mythological units and God Powers that can be recharged and used multiple times. This aspect adds more depth that may have not been there for some players for AOE4. The gameplay aspect does still feel like a RTS from 2002, but the campaign, skirmish and the option of PVE multiplayer will supply a ton of hours to dive into Retold.
A faithful remaster of a classic RTS game with many enhancements that improve on an already great game.
Age of Mythology Retold is a reimagining of the original that adds more than just aesthetics and brings it closer to more modern RTS games without losing sight of its idiosyncrasies. With a major graphical overhaul and many quality-of-life improvements in resource management and optimization, it remains a fun experience for everyone, veterans and newbies alike.

The gods are immortal and so is this game: it's still as fun as it was 20 years ago and has received just the right facelift to remain attractive.

Age of Mythology Retold is fun, don’t get me wrong. The visual overhaul alone is enough to make playing this 22-year-old game easier, and the quality-of-life improvements sand down some of the older versions’ more annoying edges. However, with more substantial structural improvements in later Age of Empires games, plus with the likes of Ara: History Untold just around the corner, I’m just not sure Retold needed to exist.
A finely re-made classic that is still as engaging and fun as it was back in 2002.

World's Edge and its partners successfully revive the most underrated Age of Empires game with the launch of Age of Mythology: Retold. More than a pure definitive edition, this classic strategy game gets a full-blown remake with smart gameplay changes and a bevy of options to make it approachable. Aside from a few bugs and glitches that should be addressed, it's a phenomenal game for RTS fans to sink their teeth into.
Similar to how I felt with the Age of Empires remasters, the quality-of-life changes to Age of Mythology Retold are welcome and help refresh it for modern gamers, even if it still does feel like a game stuck in 2002. In reality, I’d love to see a new Mythology game that builds upon the original in the same way Age of Empires 4 did. For now, the new 4k visuals, enhanced sounds, and improved AI make for an incredible reimagining of an old classic.
Age of Mythology: Retold is a triumphant revival of a beloved classic. It combines the best elements of the original with modern upgrades and refinements, delivering a fantastic strategic experience that feels both fresh and familiar. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the original or new to the world of mythology, this game offers an epic journey worth embarking on. I think that with this game Age of Mythology finally gets the respect it deserves in the pantheon of great RTS games.
Age of Mythology Retold brings back a classic, with new - great - visuals, a new UI, and a few new gameplay features. While it does, for the most part, feel more like a remaster, there's still an incredible amount to love here, and the few new features the army of developers have added bring a whole new level to the game.
Age of Mythology Retold is a faithful modernization of the 2002 original, capable of removing the dust from a true masterpiece of the past. The innovations made to the game mechanics are excellent, although reporting the presence of some bugs.

In its day, Age of Mythology introduced some compelling new ideas into the real time strategy genre. While I think it’s overdue for a complete remake, Age of Mythology: Retold is an excellent way to reacquaint players with a genuine classic, and a perfect introduction for gamers new to the title.
Some RTS remasters have been terrible, chock full of issues. Age of Mythology: Retold is not one of them. Some bumps, like the terrible, lifeless voice acting are hard to get over. I love the idea of being able to play with a controller, and the support is there, it still doesn't feel right. The campaign is great once you get into it, and there is plenty to keep a single player happy for some time. This one is hard not to recommend to fans of the RTS genre who like to relive a bit of their younger days, but might be a bit to much to chew off for the casual fan.
Age of Mythology Retold is the dream of all fans of the old Ensemble Studios title: it allows you to play what is on balance a remake with a visibly improved technical sector and many small innovations on the gaming front. It is therefore an opportunity to discover or rediscover this real-time strategy, perhaps taking advantage of its presence in the console and PC Game Pass catalog.

Age of Mythology Retold is a true nostalgic delight that will remind many players of the great times spent on the family PC, between school assignments or after an afternoon snack. It belongs to that category of titles that are unlikely to leave the podium of the best strategy games anytime soon.

Age of Mythology was already a fun game back in the day, and one of Ensemble Studios' best works. With Age of Mythology: Retold, World's Edge and Forgotten Empires have taken it upon themselves to preserve everything that made this entry special, and modernize this title so that a wider audience has the opportunity to enjoy one of the best exponents of the genre. There's no doubt about it, Age of Mythology: Retold is the definitive way to experience one of the great RTS classics.

Age of Mythology: Retold is up there with the best RTS remakes thanks to its faithfulness to the original, myriad UI and aesthetic updates, and smart decision to leave AoM's enjoyable idiosyncrasies intact.
