Age of Mythology: Retold Reviews
Age of Mythology Retold delivers a masterful blend of nostalgia and modernity, preserving the original's charm while introducing significant visual and technical upgrades. Its unique fusion of history and mythology, engaging strategic gameplay (that still holds up), enchanting soundtrack, and improved AI make it stand out. While some may criticize the imbalance between mortal and mythic units, this remains an essential RTS experience - a one-of-a-kind title that mythology and strategy fans simply can't miss.

Age of Mythology Retold is fun, don’t get me wrong. The visual overhaul alone is enough to make playing this 22-year-old game easier, and the quality-of-life improvements sand down some of the older versions’ more annoying edges. However, with more substantial structural improvements in later Age of Empires games, plus with the likes of Ara: History Untold just around the corner, I’m just not sure Retold needed to exist.
Age of Mythology: Retold eliminates the need to play the original titles as it takes everything from both of those games, modernizes it and brings the experience to 2024. While it lacks the polish of Age of Empires IV, the game remains extremely fun thanks to the mythological units and God Powers that can be recharged and used multiple times. This aspect adds more depth that may have not been there for some players for AOE4. The gameplay aspect does still feel like a RTS from 2002, but the campaign, skirmish and the option of PVE multiplayer will supply a ton of hours to dive into Retold.
The console debut of Age of Mythology: Retold is welcome, as it's an interesting, fun, and long-lasting RTS. The gameplay changes introduced are convincing and expand the original experience without altering its essence. However, on Xbox machines, the adaptation of controls to a pad is somewhat awkward, sacrificing the intuitive PC control system. It's not unplayable but will require extra effort to master. Fans of the genre should consider this a recommended purchase.

Age of Mythology: Retold is both a solid RTS and reimagining, but a bit of an odd one as well. It brings enough changes to the table to offer a new experience, but at the same time one that is in other ways bound in the past. Both this and its less than optimal visuals make it feel a bit stuck between old and new.
Some RTS remasters have been terrible, chock full of issues. Age of Mythology: Retold is not one of them. Some bumps, like the terrible, lifeless voice acting are hard to get over. I love the idea of being able to play with a controller, and the support is there, it still doesn't feel right. The campaign is great once you get into it, and there is plenty to keep a single player happy for some time. This one is hard not to recommend to fans of the RTS genre who like to relive a bit of their younger days, but might be a bit to much to chew off for the casual fan.
Age Of Mythology Retold is a solid RTS with tonnes of content and modes to satisfy different gaming tastes but its steep learning curve and time investment to master its controls may be too much for some.
Old school strategy, sensibly modernised. Creaky cutscenes and character art aside, the visual overhaul works wonders.
Age of Mythology: Retold is not just a re-issue of an RTS classic, but an overhaul that brings the world of Mythology to modern times. Revamping old techniques and introducing new controls and automations, this game proves what was thought to be impossible: a rich RTS experience playable via controller.

Age of Mythology: Retold isn’t a flawless masterpiece—no game ever is—but it’s a certainly thoughtful, well-executed revival that honours its roots while answering the prayers of discerning modern gamers.
Age of Mythology: Retold is a faithful revival of a beloved classic, bringing its mythological warfare to the PlayStation 5 with improved visuals, streamlined controls, and satisfyingly strategic gameplay. While some aspects such as the iffy AI and occasional bugs hold it back from true greatness, it still offers a compelling strategy experience that both old fans and newcomers can are sure to enjoy. With its deep strategy, vast content, and refined console controls, Age of Mythology: Retold is a must-play for RTS enthusiasts. It may not reinvent the genre, but it proves that even classic strategy titles can stand the test of time.
It could have been done better, but no harm had been committed. Age of Mythology bewitches you with visuals and atmosphere but keeps you under its spell by addictive gameplay, which hasn´t gotten old even after 22 years. It can surprise experienced players and newbies who have to taste the feeling when Titan turns the enemy´s fort into dust in a blink of an eye.

Age of Mythology: Retold is a great modernized experience of a classic old game. It keeps the best things from the old game, including the charm. It adds a lot, providing a new experience with added nostalgia. The original game was already a great RTS game, and Retold maintains this status. It compares pretty well to its cousins in the other Age games and more than well with other RTS games.
