We've been absolutely spoiled by excellent platforming games recently, and The Plucky Squire is up there with the best of them. Controlling Jot in this fourth-wall-breaking adventure is an utter delight. It's a shame a few bugs persist, but they're not quite enough to stop The Plucky Squire being one of the highlights of the year so far.

Ultimately, I loved my time with The Plucky Squire, the developers clearly have the fundamentals of platforming down and compensate for a lack of difficulty with its heartwarming story and cute characters (Moonbeard is my favorite). The feel-good story will capture both adults and children, as will the forgiving (but fun!) gameplay and puzzles. All Possible Futures does a fantastic job using the tropes of fairy tales to tell a sincere story of fate, heroism, and the responsibility to have faith in ourselves to change and grow.

The Plucky Squire oozes creativity and charm on every page. It stands aside Balatro and Animal Well as one of the best indie games of the year.

The Plucky Squire may not be the most challenging game you'll play. It is, however, the most charming, most beautiful, and most engrossing of these 2D action-adventure titles you'll have the pleasure of experiencing.

The Plucky Squire is a creative triumph and certainly lives up to the hype ever since it was first announced. The full experience is wonderful, often employing a change of mechanics from one level to the next, keeping players on their toes with fresh gameplay. The Plucky Squire deserves a spot on anyone's list of titles to look forward to this year. It is a refreshing game amidst the barrage of AAA titles, and certainly a reminder that falling back to depend on a creatively fun and polished experience can do no wrong.

Simply put, The Plucky Squire is a celebration of the creative spirit; of how art can inspire others to create for themselves; of childhood imagination never burning out. If you were the kind of kid who saw entire worlds in your toy chest, who daydreamed about books so much you got chastised by teachers for not paying attention to the books they wanted you to read, or who immediately pretended you were the hero of a movie you just watched on the way out of a theater, The Plucky Squire sings to that part of you that still burns inside. It's a constantly changing adventure of a game that'll take you through genres and ideas you thought you'd left behind years ago, through a world so playful and joyous, and with a character so darned plucky, that you just might walk away ready to create something magical of your own one day.

The Plucky Squire is a beautiful story for children -and adults- turned into a video game. All Possible Futures brings us with its first title a game that is as imaginative and creative as it is simple, which can also be seen as a problem due to its lack of difficulty. A good story awaits us, well told and with a message, which makes the title even more interesting and which everyone should give a chance.

The Plucky Squire may have some execution issues, but it certainly delivers a fun, likable adventure full of love for the artists and craftsmen of our world. It's an excellent debut from James Turner as director and lead artist, showing off his full potential as a storyteller and making a solid case for the concept of video games as art. A sequel or DLC that once again explores the Kingdom of Mana would certainly be very welcome.

The Plucky Squire combines a wide variety of genres in an innovative narrative. The story is deliberately based on classic plot threads, but not without changing them again and again in surprising ways. Unfortunately, some passages drag on for too long, in which the same sequence of events is repeated over and over again. Sometimes it seems as if Plucky Squire wants to depict too much in order to fulfill everything “perfectly”, which leads to minor flaws in some of the mechanics. Overall, however, these are so minor that they don't really detract from the enjoyment of the game. Anyone looking for an unusual title that surprises more than once will be well served by The Plucky Squire.
