Metal Slug Tactics Reviews
Metal Slug Tactics' move from the arcade to a tactical RPG has turned out better than I ever expected, this game is both challenging and rewarding to play.
Metal Slug Tactics is an excellent adaptation of the franchise to an entirely new genre. It doesn't play anything like the older Metal Slug games, but in some ways, it still does. It's fast paced, engaging, and frequently funny and clever. The core mechanics are instantly engaging and a genuine delight to experience. Perhaps the only real complaint I can think of is that the roguelike style might not be for everyone, but even that is true to the style of the original arcade games. Both fans of the franchise and those who can't tell a Metal Slug from a Metal Gear will find a lot to like in Tactics.
Although its combat and iconic visuals are excellent, the harsh roguelike setup of Metal Slug Tactics is both unnecessary and a hindrance to the amount of fun that you'll get out of the experience. On the bright side, its clever bosses certainly pose memorable challenges. 🎖️
In short, Metal Slug Tactics is a fresh and exciting proposition that captures the essence of the series. It also enriches it by introducing new elements where its exciting and risky mix of strategy and roguelike stand out. All this while staying true to the iconic visual style that we loved so much in its time.

Metal Slug Tactics takes the classic run-and-gun gameplay and turns it into a tactical, turn-based experience. The game features roguelite elements, making each playthrough feel different and encourages you to try new strategies. While some mission objectives can feel repetitive, the beautiful pixel art and engaging gameplay make it a worthwhile addition to the Metal Slug series.
Metal Slug Tactics fuses tradition and innovation, adapting the iconic gameplay of the series to the context of strategic roguelike. Fast-paced action and controlled chaos are expertly blended with tactical elements, character progression and demanding challenges. The player faces the return of General Morden, using unique character abilities and interesting mechanics such as dynamic cover, synchronisation of attacks and judicious resource management. However, the game is characterised by a high level of difficulty and an over-reliance on unpredictability, which penalises strategic planning. Instead, it shines with a visual style faithful to the saga and an evocative soundtrack, although it suffers from repetitiveness in the maps and missions.

Your appreciation of Metal Slug Tactics is really going to hinge on how open you are to its genre change, and it being a rogue-like on top of that. Get over that hurdle and you’re in for a good time.
Metal Slug Tactics is a game that caught me by surprise in a few ways at first. I wasn’t sure at first what to make of the roguelite aspects, and even fifteen hours down the line with the title I still feel it is one of the weaker aspects of the game. The game’s performance on the Nintendo Switch is damning for the title and the user interface being as intrusive as it was didn’t give me the best welcome to the game. I will say I did enjoy the game with the issues put aside. I just wouldn’t suggest picking it up on the Nintendo Switch and would rather opt for either the PC or Playstation/Xbox console versions, which hopefully alleviate the main issues I had with the game and give gamers a much more pleasurable Metal Slug experience with a heavy slice of roguelite tactics.
Metal Slug Tactics doesn't reinvent the strategy game genre. In fact, if there's one criticism to be made, it's this lack of innovation. But does that make it a bad game? Absolutely not! What it does, it does well. The developers respect the very essence of the series and its story. Returning to the heroes we know and their abilities is a real pleasure. Humor, though discreet, is always present. For Metal Slug fans, this is a definite “yes”. For fans of strategy games, it's also a title worth discovering. In short, Metal Slug Tactics has something for everyone.

Metal Slug Tactics is a fun game that combines strategy and traditional elements of the series. Unfortunately, I can't recommend it right now. The issues, especially when it comes to performance and random crashes are very annoying and destroy what should have been a good experience. Besides that, the small font and PT-BR translation, that isn't 100% with many words still in English, are points that should be improved upon. If Dotemu focuses on fixing these mistakes and making it more stable, Metal Slug Tactics may become another fun strategy option in the system.

Metal Slug Tactics’ clever ideas and gorgeous pixel art clash head-on with performance issues and a host of glitches on the Switch.
Minor imperfections and a few clumsy omissions slightly diminish otherwise genius idea. However, Metal Slug Tactics is a decent tactical game with fun gameplay mechanics.

Metal Slug Tactics successfully captured the chaotic essence of the series in a tactical game by introducing an innovative way to play. The series’ identity remains intact through its graphics, soundtrack, and the lighthearted, unpretentious personality of its characters. The game offers an enjoyable challenge but can be punishing for those unfamiliar with tactical games. While fun, the roguelike style may become tedious over time, especially if performance issues are not addressed.

Metal Slug Tactics is easy to pick up and a great homage to the series, with its turn-based system adding a fresh twist. However, it may not engage players new to the universe.

In terms of structure, this may be a mixed bag for many players. Fans of Metal Slug who loved the high-octane, gun-blazing action may feel out of place here, aside from the immensely pleasing and nostalgic pixel art. Turn-based tactics enthusiasts might struggle with the roguelike, rinse-and-repeat progression. That said, the turn-based tactical gameplay is extremely fun and well-executed. Players who are open to something different and have the patience to let the somewhat overwhelming mechanics grow on them will undoubtedly find plenty of enjoyment in it.
I understand that most of these issues are fixable, and if they end up being patched, I will then firmly advocate for everyone to buy Metal Slug Tactics on the Switch (or the Steam Deck if you have access to one). As for now, however, that’s not it. I love the gameplay loop, the presentation, the perfect mixture of tactical combat with arcade-like sensibilities, but I expected a lot more from this game in this particular platform, which felt like the perfect home for it when it was first announced.
Metal Slug Tactics is a bold, addictive strategy game that lives up to the main entries in the series. It’s highly recommended for both Metal Slug fans and strategy enthusiasts, offering a challenging yet rewarding blend of genres for all players.

Metal Slug Tactics offers a completely different experience to the typical "run and gun" of previous games.

Metal Slug Tactics is an interesting addition to the Metal Slug franchise, bringing a fresh approach that mixes nostalgia with innovation. While it doesn't revolutionize the tactical strategy genre, the game offers a fun and challenging experience that lives up to the series' traditional charm and difficulty. However, performance issues and a lack of cohesion regarding information within the game ended up breaking my immersion far more often than I would have liked.
