Richly detailed and only occasionally derivative, Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog is well worth the few hours of your time it will take for a playthrough and a half.

Stories From Sol: the Gun-Dog would fit right into any collection of the best PC-98 titles, emulating the detailed art and bit-crushed music flawlessly while also integrating modern game design to marry the best of both worlds. It creates an exciting and dramatic sci-fi universe just like your favourite mecha anime from the 80s, while avoiding the bad tropes that are best left in the past. It's an excellent debut into the world of Sol, and I can't wait for whatever next instalment may come.

As an introduction to a grander story and universe full of possibilities, there is potential here. For its price, players get an OVA’s worth of story stretched to about three to four hours. This would have been an awesome first chapter, but the fact that it ends with a big question mark will leave players wanting in frustration.

Space Colony Studios did a fine job with their first effort in the Stories from Sol series. It definitely isn't going to appeal to everyone - players who haven't enjoyed adventure games won't likely be won over here, but if you're like me and felt some real nostalgia looking at the game's screenshots and trailer, I'm pretty sure you'll have a good time. Now I guess I'll have to wait for the next entry in the series.

Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog has made a great impression on me because of the characters, the narrative, and how everything is so detailed. The gameplay and text create a frantic experience, contrasting with the laid-back visual novel style.

Between good and bad things, Stories of Sol: The Gun-Dog shows us an adventure that, despite pretty good, might be an annoying experience sometimes, which it's overall good, despite that. It's amazing pixel art with great color pallette options it's a great way to present the game to the world, being the most iconic aspect of the game. With some of it's flaws showed above, it's an interesting well told narrative, even if this "good" can't fit so perfectly while describing this title, far from perfect, unfortunately

Stories From Sol: The Gun-Dog is a decent visual novel, and a good opening salvo for what is supposed to be the first entry to a wider universe. While most of the story is self-contained, there are major plot points left open to be resolved in later releases. The different visual styles all look good, the story is fine if familiar, and you can get through it in an afternoon.

Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog is a remarkable tribute to PC-98 visual novels and hard sci-fi anime of a specific vintage. The visuals are pitch-perfect with multiple settings that offer different vibes, and the soundtrack is a complex beast of speaker-straining chiptunes that enhances the mood even further.

Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog is a somewhat short but sweet visual novel experience that captures the heart of the PC-98 era and retro mecha anime of decades past.

Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog masterfully blends retro-inspired visuals with modern storytelling, delivering a gripping sci-fi narrative filled with player-driven choices and Lovecraftian tension. With its richly developed protagonist, immersive exploration, and nostalgic ‘90s anime aesthetic, the game evokes the charm of classic PC-Engine adventures while tackling mature themes like PTSD and interplanetary warfare.

A visual novel adventure game emulating the style and serious constraints of a PC-98 title, Stories From Sol: The Gun Dog tells a compelling and suspenseful tale of ingenuity and resourcefulness in deep space. This is one for those who like their retro indies, but regardless of niche, it’s a brilliant game that deserves attention.

I came into Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog solely for two reasons: the initial art and the promise of a “PC-98 style adventure.” What I got was an enthralling story straight out of late-80s mecha anime, with some honestly surprising turns, all accompanied by stunning pixel artwork evoking the era.

Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog inspired by sci-fi adventure games and anime of the 80s. Not only does it hit all the notes it goes for it excels in them. The game has a gripping narrative filled with characters I fell in love with. The Gun-Dog itself feels like a real live-in ship that I wanted to keep exploring as well. It looks beautiful as well and has a soundtrack I got lost in. The game is short but I'm already playing again to see what scenarios I missed. I can't recommend it enough, and can't wait to see what other players find on their first playthrough.
