Commandos: Origins puts a strict focus on stealth, and the result is slow-paced, challenging, and consistently satisfying when all your plans come together.

There's no doubt that Commandos Origins is a love letter to the franchise, delivering very similar sensations with a modern twist. Still, its harsh design and some technical flaws mean it's not for everyone. It's worth a try if you're into stealth.

Commandos: Origins is probably very good; an interesting historical setting, charming visuals, and deep and varied strategic options. You won't notice any of that if playing on console however, you'll be too busy wrestling with the terrible controls to be having much fun. That, and the buggy visuals, make this one to be missed unless you're on PC.

Claymore Game Studios realized what made the original Commandos games so great, retained the heart and soul, and sanded off all the prickly edges. Commandos: Origins is a love letter to the originals in everything it does.

The problems inherent to stealth games hold back Commandos Origins, but it's still a high-stakes, high-intensity RTS where even the smallest action can feel meaningful. Meticulous, difficult, and demanding, it will test your patience as much as your tactical insight, but when you finally get it right, Commandos Origins is rewarding.

For as big and ambitious as its levels may be, the most reliable way to progress in Commandos: Origins is a tedious process of luring each guard to his doom, one at a time.

Commandos Origins does an admirable job bringing the real-time-tactics gameplay to a modern era. There's a lot to love in the level design and tactical toolkit afforded. I just wish some of the bugs and performance issues were ironed out so I could enjoy them more. Unless you're a patient gamer who enjoys real-time-tactics games, or a long-time Commandos aficionado, you might want to wait for one or two updates from now to try this out.

Commandos: Origins is a game with a big heart but (apparently) small budget. It transported me well into the past, and that’s both a good and a bad thing. We get some nice and warm nostalgia next to some really rusty gameplay mechanics. All in all, I got quite a bit of fun from plaiyng Origins but I can recommend it only to the veterans of the genre craving anything new.

As an Real-time tactics title, Commandos: Origins stands out as a solid entry in the genre. It carries over key elements from the original series while blending in modern mechanics and stylistic choices reminiscent of Shadow Tactics. The generous number of missions offers plenty of content, inviting players to revisit and refine their strategies. That said, persistent bugs and technical hiccups remain noticeable issues-and they might just become the unpredictable factors on your road to victory.

The end result is a game that's as challenging as it is intriguing, rewarding well-thought-out strategies and the occasional bit of improvisation. That said, some clever ideas can fall apart due to a few too many technical hiccups-issues we hope will be ironed out with future patches.

Although some elements detract from the enjoyment of the game, the Commandos Origins experience and its engaging gameplay have the same feel and feel as its original versions, which is enough to keep gamers interested.

Some comebacks just don't work. A review by a die-hard Commandos fan confirms that most old-school players will be happy with the new game. But perhaps a little uncritical.

A flawed but fun return to stealth strategy. If you're nostalgic or just love tactical tension, Commandos: Origins is worth a shot, especially on Game Pass. Check it out to see if nostalgia can really bring back the 90s.

Commandos: Origins offers gameplay that hits the mark for real-time tactics fans, but everything surrounding it feels like it’s stuck in the past. The visuals and audio are functional at best, with little flair, and the story is exactly what you'd expect—and nothing more. With its $49.99 price tag, it's hard not to feel like you're paying a bit too much for something this straightforward.

Commandos: Origins is a declaration of love to an almost forgotten genre - and at the same time proof that classic real-time tactics can still be fun in 2025. The game is clearly aimed at fans of the series (and people with patience). Newcomers might be put off by the level of difficulty at first, but those who dig in will get a rewarding, challenging gaming experience. The biggest strengths are the clever level design, the tactical depth and the co-op mode. The biggest weaknesses? Small technical glitches and a limited choice of characters.

Commando: Origins was meant to mark the grand return of the franchise, but with a lack of cohesive story, limited freedom, numerous bugs, and poor optimization overshadowing its nostalgic and varied missions, it’s best to wait for a few patches before diving in.

Lots of light, little shadow! The new Commandos adventures are every bit as good as the old games and, naturally, even better than they were back then in technical terms. The test version was already in perfect condition, with no crashes or stuttering whatsoever. However, Claymore Games must be criticized for not breaking any new ground in terms of innovation and relying entirely on the old warhorses who liked the gameplay back in 1998 and have no desire for major changes. Because there's nothing really new here. So if you like the gameplay and first got to know it through a game like Shadow Tactics, then we highly recommend taking a trip to the mother of the sub-genre. However, if you were actually expecting something new in the realm of real-time tactics, you might be slightly disappointed. The origins are also reflected in the game design – this is a return to the roots, not a move towards new branches.
