Gears of War: Reloaded Reviews
Gears of War: Reloaded is more than a remaster, not quite enough to call it a full remake, but at the same time, it's a return to a great game. You can expect a good, intense story, a great multiplayer mode, and lots of visual improvements. It's worth returning to this adventure before the release of Gears of War: E-Day, or starting your adventure with the universe with this installment. Microsoft once again delivers a strong offering for 2025.

Gears of War Reloaded is a remaster of a remaster that it's only purpose is to bring the franchise into PlayStation, but did not introduce any major improvements that would attract an audience unfamiliar to it

It's showing its age now, but Gears of War: Reloaded finally allows PlayStation gamers to experience one of the best campaigns in the previously Xbox-exclusive series. It's just a shame you'll likely run into AI issues if playing it alone. Needless to say, this is a game best played with others, either enjoying the campaign in co-op, or engaging in its competitive multiplayer modes.
Gears of War: Reloaded is a very solid game, even if the base is nearly 20 years old. The concept of a cover-based, stop-and-pop shooter may feel out of date, since so many other games have done this since the original title's release. The feeling of fast but weighted movement and meaty gunplay is still unmatched after all this time, though. It is a game that's easy to pick up and play without any compromises, and the title still has a great presentation despite the minor touch-ups from the original remake. For PS5 owners in particular, Reloaded is a perfect way to experience a very influential modern classic.
PlayStation finally welcomes one of the best action franchises, in its best possible version. Gears of War: Reloaded is excellent and a complete package to please all players, especially those experiencing the series for the first time.

Gears of War: Reloaded celebrates its arrival on PS5 with an edition that improves on what we've already seen in Gears of War Ultimate for Xbox Series and PC. The same game as always, now more beautiful, with better performance and many improvements in lighting, cross-play, and more. The Coalition once again demonstrates its great work with a remaster that takes advantage of new technologies and maintains interest in a title that works just as well today as it did almost 20 years ago when it was first released.

Gears of War: Reloaded is a nostalgic, yet dated, trek through the iconic origins of the beloved Gears series. While the game is essentially a remaster of a remaster from 2015’s Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, it’s a worthwhile introduction for more gamers looking to play on this generation of consoles.
Gears of War: Reloaded is a fantastic remaster of a superb game that’s worth its asking price. Although its dated gameplay style and execution hold it back, the game still offers hours of fun and gory entertainment.
Overall, Gears of War: Reloaded is a disappointing first endeavor on the PlayStation 5. While getting to experience the story is something I enjoyed, it's not the best part of this title. In an age of remakes and remasters, this doesn't fit the profile. With the visuals getting only some touch-ups, the audio is not great. Plus, the controls feel as old as before, making this feel just like a one-to-one port. Many PlayStation players may get turned away by the lackings that this title offers.
While Gears of War: Ultimate Edition launched a decade ago, Gears of War: Reloaded feels like the actual ultimate way to experience this timeless classic that has aged well and looks on par with many modern games due to its visual and gameplay enhancements.
Gears of War: Reloaded may not change as much from the Ultimate Edition, but that doesn't change how enjoyable it is to go back and fight the Locust again. The game has retained its core, action-packed third-person combat and interesting story, while improving visual effects. It's nice that the game adds in a bunch of post-release content from the Ultimate Edition, but it doesn't change as much as I had hoped. Still, the game finally releasing on Steam is great, and with crossplay and the minor improvements, I can see this being a great investment for third-person shooter fans. The game is also very playable on the Steam Deck, and it's a joy to play on the go. We definitely have some options to play, but regardless, it will be playable and enjoyable for portable play.
For a new generation of players, Gears of War: Reloaded is a fantastic introduction to one of the most important franchises in modern gaming. It’s a chance to see where the core mechanics of countless third-person shooters originated from, and to be able to witness just how revolutionary this game was. At the same time, some aspects may feel dated—like the somewhat clunky movement and limited gameplay variety—the game’s brutal action, memorable set pieces, and engaging co-op campaign make it a worthwhile experience.
Gears of War: Reloaded is a fantastic chance to play one of the best FPS campaigns of the last 20 years. With a robust multiplayer mode included, this remains a must-play for both newcomers and fans alike.
Gears of War: Reloaded’s few issues don’t detract much from an otherwise great package that still holds up and is now also accessible on PS5 with standout DualSense features.
Gears of War: Reloaded is the best way to return to where it all began. It goes beyond the Ultimate Edition, updating the classic without losing the raw grit that defined it back in 2006, and reminds us why Gears of War grew into one of gaming’s most iconic series.
Gears of War: Reloaded is the perfect way to experience one of the finest games of all time, with superior combat and a cover system that still hasn't been matched.
Gears of War has now been remastered for the second time, this time arriving under the name Reloaded. In my opinion, it’s a solid refresher ahead of E-Day, and I really enjoyed the technical enhancements it delivers. However, it does feel like it’s starting to show its age.

Gears of War makes it PlayStation debut with a new remaster of the first game in the series, Gears of War: Reloaded. I'll admit, there is something surreal about seeing Marcus Fenix and Coletrain chainsawing through locusts on a Sony console. However, once the novelty of playing a Gears game on PlayStation wears off, you are quickly reminded that you are still just playing a nearly two-decade-old game with a few visual upgrades over the last time they remastered Gears of War back in 2015 with the Ultimate Edition.
What we have here is not just a simple remaster, but a tribute to one of the most influential games in Xbox history.

Gears of War: Reloaded is a must-play for PlayStation fans and a brilliant entry point for any Gears of War newcomer, especially with Gears of War E-Day on the horizon. The campaign offers a cinematic action-movie-like thrill ride, establishing the Locust threat and hinting at major narrative moments that will occur down the line.
