NINJA GAIDEN 4 does a good job of reviving a famous series. It stays true to the series’ core while adding new elements that feel natural and exciting. The fighting is accurate, smooth, and tough in all the right ways. The story gives background information without getting in the way of the action, and the puzzles and exploration make the game loop more fun. The graphics and sound design are top-notch, and they really pull players into Ryu Hayabusa’s world.

The technical aspects are quite solid, the art direction is consistent (though it doesn't reach the heights of other similar products today), and the action is extremely satisfying. There are still some limitations related to the environmental design (in particular, the graphics are not always up to date, characterized by some flat and unrealistic textures), the linearity of the narrative, and the balance, which is not always perfect, but the overall experience is that of intense, effective, lethal action, (almost) without compromise and as sharp as a real ninja's blade.

Ninja Gaiden 4 is not perfect. Its scenery is rather monotonous, Ryu is reduced to some sort of little treat for longtime fans and its music score is not memorable, but the way it blends PlatinumGames' elegance and Team Ninja's wickedness is nothing short of a miracle thanks to its content and responsiveness, and that's enough of a reason to be interested in this game.

It took no less than 13 years after Ninja Gaiden 3 for a sequel to arrive. Fortunately, this new chapter is well worth the wait. During the approximately 10 hours it will take you to complete the adventure for the first time, there will be absolutely no downtime. But there will be many deaths along the way. Thrilling and with enough variety to keep things from getting repetitive, Ninja Gaiden 4 is the kind of action game we love. Let's just hope we don't have to wait as long for the next installment. And putting Ryu front and center wouldn't be a bad thing either.
