While there's a lot to love about Sifu developer Sloclap's new multiplayer soccer game Rematch, it scores a few own goals.

A heart-pumping genre superlative that should not be missed despite some technical issues to sort out.

I thought for all the world that this game would be a championship contender, but as it turns out, it's just relegation fodder.

Sloclap is onto something here, and I even found myself sneaking a couple matches when I got stuck writing this review. That’s a hell of an accomplishment. Now all I need to do is find a regular team. Anybody looking to kick a ball around?

A clever and hugely enjoyable online team game, even at this early stage in its career -although it feels more like a rival to Rocket League than EA Sports FC.

We already applaud Sloclap's approach to offering football matches that are out of the ordinary. When they work, they're irresistible, but the catalog of options needs more depth and more robust online servers.

Rematch has everything it needs to become the ultimate arcade soccer game, but it's in desperate need of a technical overhaul. The ideas are there, the fun is there, but the issues overshadow the virtues. Hopefully, with a patch or future updates, the game will resume after this hydration break, or else we'll be forced to go to overtime.

Rematch can be fun in bursts and over time it should grow to have a decent community. The emphasis on player skill over unlocking perks and skill points is refreshing, but can be hindered by the control scheme and camera. Some issues also need to be sorted too. Rematch is a nice distraction as an arcadey football game, and it has its place, but it is a small club that needs to build over time to challenge the bigger ones.

If you're in the mood for some solid multiplayer football, REMATCH is certainly a good effort that you'll be happy to attempt to master thanks to intricate controls, and the bite-sized sessions that throw the rule book away for the sake of fluidity and fun.

I love how solid it feels, whether I'm between the pipes or out on the pitch, and how intense the matches can get whether I'm playing the ranked 5v5 mode or the more casual 3v3. But the lack of content, poor design choices, and a lacking art style combined with a slow-progressing battle pass-like structure and less-than-inspired unlockable cosmetics cut the whole package of Rematch at its knees.

It’s soccer by way of the fighting game genre: twitchy, intense, and one mistake away from disaster. For me, someone who isn’t a soccer fan, I can appreciate what this game is doing but for fans of this form of football I know you will vibe with Rematch.

Rematch is a new and fresh page in the Football (Soccer, for US readers) Video Game History. Slocap has to add some of the lacking feature, especially cross-platform multiplayer, but the game is really challenging and it can become a massive hit.

Rematch is very close to being a brilliant online sports title, and we're confident it can reach its full potential with the right updates and post-launch support. The gameplay has depth, and successful team play is super rewarding. Once it gets past its early teething issues, this has real potential to take off.

Its end-to-end matches are exhilarating from the first whistle to the last, full of punch-the-air moments and tense, tactical battles that get the blood pumping and palms sweating.

Ultimately, our encounter with Rematch gave us generally positive feelings. Sloclap has reinterpreted the rules of the game of soccer, declining them in a game context that is all about pure fun, free from all the complications that have occurred in the greatest exponents of the genre in recent years.

Sloclap has undeniably conquered new territory with Rematch. In fact, the studio has pulled off a remarkable feat in renewing an ultra-codified genre to create a much freer, more tactical and technical experience that is truly exhilarating. Soccer is frenetically redesigned in a highly addictive arcade style. The game's entry is therefore a success, but it will take exemplary endurance over the long term for the formula to continue to be effective. If the promises of additional content live up to expectations, we could well be looking at one of the new kings of football.

Rematch evokes the nostalgic feelings of the glorious FIFA Street days by revitalizing arcade football with casual and ranked multiplayer modes that allow players to delve in. While the developer has future content planned for the game, the game is being marred by a myriad of technical issues that impact gameplay and server stability, but they are being proactive with patch updates that hopefully add that luster before the season ends.
